And the game is close and there were goals.
Too bad the shift to NBCSN may kill some of that momentum.

Here is the problem going back to the OLN days.

NBCSN promises cable and satellite providers that they will have exclusive coverage of TWO SCF games to help nudge up the payments they receive from providers.

NBC has gambled the past few years that there will not be a sweep and the Cup clincher will be on OTA television. Since 2010, Games 3 and 4 have been assigned to cable - I believe the last time the Cup was clinched on cable only was 1999, the infamous 'No Goal' game in Buffalo.

The bean counters at Comcast have somehow figured out that in the end the bottom line is served by having two SCF games on cable only. This year they will take a massive hit for Games 3 and 4 in Chicago as local ad sales on NBC owned Channel 5 would be huge.

But now once again NBC knows the Cup will be presented on the main network.

That said - the lack of a postgame show on either NBC outlet was unforgivable Saturday night.

The Tampa Bay Lightning’s 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks to even their Stanley Cup Final series at one game apiece drew a 4.8 overnight household rating on NBC. That’s up versus the 4.23 overnight rating for Thursday night’s game 1 and a record metered market rating for a game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The rating was also up vs. the 4.6 overnight rating for last year’s Kings-Rangers game 2 which similarly aired after a Belmont Stakes where a bid for horse racing’s Triple Crown was in play, but this year’s number might have been bolstered due to American Pharoah’s win and race viewers sticking around for post-race coverage of the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

The game drew a 22.6 rating in Chicago and a 15.1 in Tampa. Buffalo was 3rd with a 8.6 followed by Milwaukee with a 6.7 and Ft. Meyers with a 6.5.

Changes , what exactly can change.
You cant force people to watch hockey, it has a core base just be happy with that .
It used to be a lot worse.

The time when the Stanley Cup Finals are played could change. It needs to be pushed back to an earlier date so it doesn't interfere with the NBA finals and all the other stuff going on now.

Start the regular season a week and a half earlier (some time in late September), which would then start the playoffs in early April. a perfect time when the playoffs should start would be right after the NCAA baseketball championship game. That game is on a Monday, the playoffs could start on a Wednesday.

The Triple Crown win probably helped hockey's usually poor out-of-market ratings big time, since the game does better than Game 1 nationwide, despite worse local ratings in Chicago and Tampa.

I know competing with the NFL for a longer period of time then necessary is not in the cards. If anything, starting the season later might make more sense.

Compete with NFL? The fall is dominated by both pro and college football, even world series gets crushed head to head, concerning fall schedule in this regard is meaningless.

College baseball and MLB is really the only other thing going on right now. The Stanley Cup doesn't fight directly against the NBA because they are on different nights. I don't see the issue.

Uh. No. Putting th SCF earlier potentially puts the games head to head with the NBA conference finals. Right now the NBA and NHL are NOT on the same night which is good for the NHL.

In Tampa more people watched Belmont Stakes than Stanley Cup Final.

17.8 vs. 15.1 (Game 2).

How anyone can complain about a 4.8 overnight rating for hockey in the US is mind blowing. Seems like NBC is setting records, or close to it, just about every game. NBC has to be loving this.

I believed anything over 5 million for the weekend game NBC would've been happy with....Those preliminary numbers are only from 8-10eastern time...So there is an hour missing...That last hour where the game was close is where it peaked at....

Last year's game 2 did 6.4 million same scenario with Belmont and it being on a Saturday night..

This series has a lot of momentum: two exciting teams, 2 markets that are galvanizing behind their teams...Add this up and we could see some record game 6-7 tv ratings...

For those who are still in the business of the NBAF/SCF being a competition, dont expect an impressive rating from Game 2 tonight. Low scoring game, major star out + going up against the Tony Awards and SNB

Tony/Baseball vs Basketball? Totally different demos there, won't affect too much.

. The NBA Finals Game 2 got a 12.8/22 in metered market results – that’s up 25% from when LeBron and the Miami Heat beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the 2014 NBA Finals. It is also the best a NBA Game 2 has done since 1998 in MM results.
