In Canada, game 2 of the Final got 1.9 million viewers. Airing at roughly the same time, Canada v. China Women's World Cup got 1.67 million.

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/e...n-s-soccer-scores-big-audience-140424365.html

Almost the same ratio in the US (just multiply the numbers by 2): SCF Game 2 was watched by 3.9 million while the USA-Australia women's world cup opener recorded 3.3 million.

The Americans' 3-1 win over Australia on Monday night averaged more than 3.3 million viewers on Fox Sports 1. The previous high was nearly 2.5 million in 1999 for the tournament in the U.S.

Why? A lot of Canadian hockey fans don't cheer for the Hawks or the Bolts, so that reduces the interest in the Stanley Cup final. Plus after their bronze in 2012, the Canadian women are seen as definite contenders. As it happens, I was out of town doing other things but I would have watched the soccer over the SCF -- but then I will almost always choose any game where I have a rooting interest over one where I don't.
I thought more casual Canadians would watch the SC Finals. I watched more of the womans soccer game on saturday, so maybe its not so surprising.

edit: and just a thought, but is it possible Canadians are getting burned out on the Stanley Cup?

I personally stop caring about winter sports when summer hits, so my interest starts to wane.

edit: and just a thought, but is it possible Canadians are getting burned out on the Stanley Cup? It has been so long since a Canadian team won it that it barely even seems like the Stanley Cup is what Canadian NHL teams compete for anymore. The Canadian teams just compete with each other to be the last one standing, but it's like the Stanley Cup is exclusively an award for American NHL teams.

Personally, I think it's because the season is too long. I know that I, as a big hockey fan, do not want to watch hockey into mid-June. Simple as that. I will gladly watch the NHL Entry Draft, but I don't want to watch actual hockey in mid-June. It's just too long.

That's just me, though. I'm still watching, that being said, but it's not THAT exciting for me. I also think it's because most Canadians don't really have a horse in the race between Chicago and Tampa. I think they're waiting for a (any) Canadian team to finally reach that spot again, too.

Wow.

Just to think that in the summer of 2007, the club could not draw flies to the arena, and nobody cared about the Hawks. There is the expression that the apple did not fall far from the tree. In Rocky Wirtz case, it landed in a truck, and ended up 500 miles away from the tree.

NBC has to be loving the deal they locked up with the NHL.

Indeed

First Time Since 1968 First Four Games Decided by One Goal; No Team Has Held Multi-Goal Lead in Series

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 11, 2015 – The 2015 Stanley Cup Final, featuring the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks, has averaged 4.965 million viewers on NBC/NBCSN, making it the second-most watched Stanley Cup Final through four games in 18 years, trailing only the Blackhawks-Bruins series in 2013 (5.341 million viewers). In addition, last night’s Game 4 produced the most-watched Stanley Cup Final quarter-hour ever on NBCSN (5.489 million, 10:30-10:45 p.m. ET). Over four games, this year’s Final has produced a 2.91 HH rating.

Following are the Top 5 markets through the first four games of 2015 Stanley Cup Final:

Rank Market HH Rating
1 Chicago 24.1
2 Tampa 15.0
3 Buffalo 6.3
4 Boston 4.8
5 Minneapolis-St. Paul 4.5
5 Ft. Myers 4.5

Locally, Chicago’s average rating of 24.1 through four games is up 18% vs. its four-game average rating for the 2013 Stanley Cup Final (20.5), when the Blackhawks faced the Bruins. Game 1 produced the highest rating ever in Tampa for a Lightning game on NBC (17.9), while last night’s Game 4 set the record for highest rating in the market for a Lightning game on NBCSN (13.9).

I'd like it if IU or somebody else can dig up the NHL finals ratings vs the NBA finals ratings locally in BOS-NY-PHI-PIT-DC.

Silver wrote the following

That is flat out wrong unless he is looking at percentage of fans in a market. Buffalo is one of the most engaged markets but it is a small one roughly the size of Providence.

In actual eyeballs Chicago has to be #1 followed by Boston (based on regular season)
No, NY. Add up all the locals.

What is it with NBC and Chicago? Does NBC see the future of Chicago sports teams? When NBC got the NBA contract it took a few years but the Bulls became a power house and started winning championships. Then NBC gets the NHL and while it took a few years longer, the Blackhawks have made it to the finals 3 times in 6 years. Great coincidence and great ratings.

I wish the Saturday games were on NBSCN so that NBC could maximize weekday games and increase their ratings. If the game had been on a Monday, ratings would have been higher. Last Saturday's game (Game 2) was a bit of smoke and mirrors due to the Belmont lead-in. It probably would have got around 3.8 like Game 5 did without that lead-in. Also putting games 3 and 4 on NBSCN probably kills some momentum on a national scale. I really hope that practice is extinguished soon. The whole Final should be on OTA. Would go a ways towards legitimizing it in the mainstream.

Monday's game is going to have insane ratings in Chicago. Hopefully TB doesn't continue to tune out. Seems like it's been a steady decline since Game 1 which had an impressive rating. Since then it's been rather average, especially when you consider how it's not the biggest market. No doubt local numbers hurt by Saturday night games and cable.

Whereas the previous games overperformed, this one's final rating should be in line with FiveThirtyEight's predictions.
