Barzal deserves the Calder but NYb fans get so defensive when anyone in the media gives Nico praise.

Let's remember that Nico is basically 2 years younger than Barzal
He's obviously a special offensive talent, but he's producing on one of the worst defensive teams ever. I'm sure his production will come down some if they actually get some structure to their system.

He's a tremendous player and obviously levels better than our pick that year, but I think that Nico can become the more valuable player year in and year out compared to Brazal

Nico's ability to tip shots and score dirty goals makes me think even more that when he get's better at faceoff's he'll take over Zajac's spot on the PP.

I think it's a minutes thing. Playing on the pk, pp,p, and 1st line center is a lot for an 18 year old.

If that's true, he better be playing #1 pp in the playoffs. Limit his pk if you have to, we have other players who are just as effective and not pp players.

I think it's more that they want the pp specialist for the faceoffs, but all I've been seeing lately is zajac losing them or getting tossed out anyways. There was also one pp i remember where it became a pp after a 4-4 and there wasn't any faceoffs and zajac was still out there.

I think a big part of it is that Nico would be no good in front of the net or in the high slot. The left side has Palmieri for the one timer, there's the point where you have Vatanen and then Hall on the half-wall. The half-wall is the playmaker side but Hall is better so he gets it.

So Nico finished with 46 even strength points, tied for 11th most of any rookie over the last 20 years, and tied for 4th most (with MacKinnon and behind only Crosby, Laine, and Matthews) of any D+1 rookie over the last 20 years.

I wonder where that ranks in the league this year? 46/51 points at even strength is pretty beastly and suggests a lot of room for growth. He's going to be a 2-way beast.

Tied for 49th in the league this year for even strength points. He's also 26th in the NHL in 5on5 points/60 minutes.

Wish Nico would be able to get in on the 1st PP unit, feel it is wasting good talent bench with him waiting for 2nd unit. When he comes on with 36 seconds left in the penalty, seems less than optimal.

i was wondering why he isn't on the PP ? actually the reason might be that he is tired and they are saving his energy for where it is the most needed.

I read a very interestin article on him, that i will paste in this thread in some hours. Where he speaks about his first NHL year. He is truly impressive. Veeeery humble guy. Respect.

He confesses that being tired was his main problem this year.
