I've been very impressed by Drouin(no surprise) and Anthony Mantha, who always seems to be dangerous whenever on the ice.

I guess we will never know, but I think the Leafs were hoping Kerby Rychel or Curtis Lazar at 21. I think they wanted one of those Cs (including Gauthier)

Impressions of Gauthier this game, he's a big kid, a decent skater. Played a very safe game. Didn't generate much offence, but didn't make any mistakes either.

I didnt like that whole second line tonight (POirer, Gauthier and Gregoire). However you could see on the PK Gauthier was very mature. Hes big, was good on the draw and in good position, just seems raw. I'm not sure I would want him at the world juniors this year or not, he'll be right on the bubble but as a fourth line PK specialist I dont think many would complain

He needs to step it up if he wants to make Team Canada, he won't make it with this type of game tonight, he needs to play to a much higher level. It was very much a meh okay game, not one that would knock your socks off.
Mantha as many have commented impressed, made a statement game of wanting to make the team. Hudon was good also. Think these 2 made a big step fwd in impressing Sutter.
Hockey's future talent analysis for Mantha
Pure and simple, Mantha is a goal scorer. He has a great frame that he uses to fight through traffic, solid puck awareness and offensive positioning, all topped off with a heavy wrister that he can fire off quickly and smoothly. He also skates extremely well, but his consistency on the ice and effort level has come into question. For a player of his size, he needs to keep his feet moving and work hard on both sides of the puck.

While Mantha would have been a nice pick, not really bothered by picking Gauthier there. Looking forward to seeing how he develops there. Have to like the defensive game and nice to have something to fall back on depending on how the offense develops over the next few years.

That 'Leafs wanted Mantha' thing was mentioned during the draft on TV when Detroit picked him. The commentator on TSN said something along the lines of 'Oh, the Leafs won't be happy about that. I know they wanted Mantha and tried to move up to get him before Detroit'.
Who knows about the accuracy of that, but it seems realistic. Mantha is a beast.
Still, as easy as it is to feel what could have been, there's little point now.
Gauthier could easily be the better player of the two. It's just too early to tell for sure.
Honestly, my #1 concern about Gauthier from what i've seen so far is that he doesn't use his frame offensively in a league nowhere near his power level. Not for a lack of caring entirely, just that he seems to lack the needed aggressiveness to maximize the potential of his size. He uses it defensively, but not near as well offensively. He has the frame and ability to blow past the tiny little no future players that are the 3rd and 4th lines of every team in Junior and also most teams 2nd lines with extreme ease. Heck, with his frame and speed he should be able to dispose of a lot of 1st liners besides the real studs. He's just way more developed physically than they are. NHL aside for the moment, in the Q, he should be able to have his way any number of times, and i just wish he'd do it more often. Maybe he can't jump right into the NHL and do that with NHL players today, but you got to learn how it feels to do it sometime. You got to learn the moment to know how it's done so it can be accomplished later in the NHL.

This is what I've noticed as well. He'll be one of the senior guys on the team next year, and hopefully being "the man" will help him throw his weight around more.
Let's remember, that Gauthier was originally not fully committed to hockey, also being a football player. It was only the last few years that he's been focused on it. Also, Most kids' draft year is their second year in the CHL. Gauthier was drafted in his first year.
He's raw, but his IQ and physical make-up make he sky the limit for him. He's still growing mentally and physically. He uses his body extremely well defensively, so good coaching should help him learn to use it offensively.
He needs time, but he's the kind of player Sutter adores in a defensive/PK role. He'll be at camp, and let's hope that his ability earns him a spot. He was extremely important at the U-18's last year, and a driving force to that team's success. He's just got to bring it again at this level.

He and Drouin were great last night. 2 notches above anyone else IMO. HM to Hudon(too bad he is a Hab)
Some of the Swedish posters can hopefully shed some light on this but it seems like Andreas Johnson's line has been bumped up as the #1 line for Frolunda. I'm guessing this is one of the reasons for Johnson slowing down offensively, having to face the top defensive pairing and shutdown line and what not.

Yeah problem is Canada has got really good defensive centermen and forwards in general. Horvat, Reinhart, Laughton, Monahan (maybe), McDavid (not amazing but solid), Lazar, Gaunce, and Gauthier are all pretty good to great defensively. If the team has Monahan, Reinhart, Horvat and Laughton down the middle, all those guys can play a shut down role and provide a bit more. Drouin might also be a center too. On the other hand, Sutter might want to stick a couple on the wing and end up with Gauthier as the specialist on the fourth line. I dont think this is his year personally but next year he should be there for sure
