LeBrun: “I think there are guys that won’t be qualified that may shock you”

Here's the problem. If Tippett doesn't really see a player there and is going to use him in the bottom six or as a healthy scratch does it make sense to invest 3mil in the guy? Or do you cut your losses?

It sucks and at the time of the deal we thought we'd see an increase in the salary cap which should've made it quite easy for us to re-sign him.

I could see them talking to Buffalo about Montour though. Try a different piece in another area of need.

Ideally I'd like to give him another shot, but the tight cap may dictate otherwise.

Athanasiou provides absolutely nothing the Sabres have any need for.

Whatever's low enough to sell him again at the TDL for more picks. :biglaugh:
As funny as that is, we don't wanna be the NHL's used car lot either. I'd consider 1yr @ $2.5 or less...maybe.

I wanna see what Brome can do 1st.

It's really just a matter of overrowding though... Ras, Svech, Smith, possibly Hirose, etc. + TDL bait: (LGD, Helm, Flip)

These are the 20 "bigger name" RFAs. Which of these won't be getting QO?

Reinhardt will of course get his QO, but will Buf pick up his arbitration award? I wouldn’t...

Lmao. Zero percent chance Brown isnt QO'd, and pretty damn close to zero for Duclair. Pretty bad take.

Obviously, maybe you missed half of the post? I only had to think about it for a second on either guy because it wouldn't shock me if Melnyk went all "There were no fans at the end of last year, I can only afford a 50 million dollar payroll"

Stetcher, Shore, Rodrigues, Benning, Caggiula. Those guys might not get a QO. Are there any shockers there?

I don't think any bigger names than that will be left to hit UFA.

Let's be completely honest, here. One or both of Nielsen and Abdelkader need to be buried. Svech is a longshot to make it in the NHL at this point, and probably doesn't start the season in the NHL if the AHL has a season. Hirose is a dud. Perlini and Timashov are both bums who shouldn't be qualified.

I'm all for Yzerman setting up shop for the used car lot if it means Detroit gets more picks.

Lol can’t be anyone of those, I would be SHOCKED if anyone or those wasn’t qualified. But eh, wait, what was he said again?

This thread becomes a little meta.

I was trying to write in my post above is that there are reports, including now from LeBrun, that NHL teams are going to be imposing an internal salary cap on themselves this year, even perennial playoff contenders. There could be a lot more than just Melnyk that can only afford a $50 million dollar payroll. For this year at least.

^^^ I doubt any of those guys isn't qualified. I'm thinking guys like Montour, Tierney, Athanasiou, Evan Rodrigues, Jankowski are potentially not getting qualified.

The Sabres are not going to qualify Montour for $3.5 M. LOL. Why on earth wouldn't they?

Timashov isn't a bum though, he gets little TOI however.

Svech in AHL if there is one, but we resigned him on a 1yr "last chance to prove it after 2 injuries " type contract, so he still has a shot.

Hirose may not be a fit for our team, just needs to add strength & improve skating a bit & another 10lbs+ of muscle wouldn't hurt either.

Perlini is the dud.

Timashov is pretty dime a dozen, and I want to see Svech succeed, I just think he's had way too many obstacles f*** him up.

Those criticisms of Hirose would be acceptable if he was 19, but he's 24 lol.

A lot of teams are cutting salary. But I think 70-75 is more realistic for most teams. I could see Ottawa being in the 60's potentially. Getting down to 50 would take some doing as that's below the cap floor so you'd need to take on some contracts that have bonuses already paid.

Agreed with most I think AA and Montour are likely candidates that are “bigger names”. AA is not a very good hockey player though so I’m not sure why it should be all that shocking. It’s already a bad value trade for Edmonton...the last thing they should do is qualify him just to justify the trade if he clearly doesn’t fit into their plans moving forward.

Yeah, I know, I only used $50 because that's what you initially wrote haha.

But it seems like a lot of these posters in this thread just look at NHL cap space and think "oh QOs to this guy are fine", when in reality I can see someone shocking drop. Don't know who because we don't know the internal situations of each team, but yeah. $70 million is a far cry from $81.5 million.

The Sabres are not going to qualify Montour for $3.5 M. LOL. Why on earth wouldn't they?

It's been speculated the Sabres will not qualify him: Could the Sabres not qualify Brandon Montour?

Friedman and Jeff Marek were discussing how some restricted free agents may not receive qualifying offers and Friedman says:
“you know who I heard is going to be that guy too maybe? Brandon Montour in Buffalo.” Marek quickly replied with: “I heard that.”

The tight offseason window may be playing a factor in all of this along with the flat cap. The Sabres could fear his arbitration award and the change in the arbitration rule this year makes things interesting too. If a team decides to walk away from an arbitration award on a player they don’t automatically become unrestricted free agents. The player now has the option to take the offer that the club made in arbitration.

All of them will get a Q.O, but I can see some walk a-ways if some arbitration numbers get too big this year.

Usually players not getting QOs are crappy AHL players on ECLs or 4th liners they don't want.

Along with Brandon Montour perhaps not getting a QO, I can also see Athanansiou (Edmonton), maybe Stetcher (Vancouver), top 4D and legit top 9 forwards will still get their QOs.

Now arbitration....that puts a different spin on things.

But neither would be ultimately shocking. LeBrun also mentioned that teams are imposing their own internal salary cap on themselves, below the NHL salary cap. I think some teams probably are in dire straights financially, critical dire straights even, due to no attendance revenue. Things might be less about winning a Cup and more about surviving for next year.
Critical dire straights? Is that like double-secret probation?

These are people who have hundreds of millions of dollars. You pretending that some of these teams would fold, rather than just be sold to another super wealthy person, is one of the most preposterous statements I have read on here (trade proposals excluded).

I can't see Montour not being qualified for the simple reason of not looking stupid for giving up a first + just to not qualify him.
