Yeah they should definitely know if they should be holding or folding by the trade deadline. Either way I can't see a significant addition this year.

Ehhh maybe not. We could easily be sitting in this same spot by the end of the month. In a spot by a point, or tied with points with a team in a spot. No one is really showing any indications that they are ready to break out and create space. Only thing going on is teams falling out like Montreal and Ottawa. Pitt is playing better, but they have been floating on the bubble for a while now. Isles and Rags have been at the back end here for a while with no sign of breaking out. Boston and Detroit the same (Tampa has moved up as they were out for a while).

Really only Pitt and us have been winning more then losing lately, but its not much.

Pitt, Philly, and the Isles also don't make up one of their games in hand until April (the snow cancelled games).

Overall performance was definitely a disgrace. This game better be a wakeup call because we have some very important games coming up. Team needs to be ready for them.

Considering the quality of the opponent, this was the worst effort in quite a while. Perhaps not the season, but in the last month easily.

Let's consider the quality of the opponent here. I don't care about Babcock or who the hell coaches there. I'm embarrassed that we've lost two games to them this year, shootouts or not.

I was embarrassed how many times we lost to them in 12-13 and 13-14 too. We swept them last year.

I think it's most likely Shero sits pat on deadline day. Seems like the safest course unless something really tempting comes along.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I'm convinced that either way there won't be much going on at the deadline. They'll make a small addition or two if we're in it and maybe a small subtraction or two if they're falling out of it. It's probably the right way to approach it this year but of course there'll be hemming and hawing if we don't trade Stemp/Schlemko and are out of a playoff spot.

It was a terrible, terrible game. Hope Hynes rips into them. Wasn't even a good effort, and here we are in the thick of the playoff race. Ugh.

I know I'm beating a dead horse but what the hell is the NHL waiting for to get rid of the shootout? They instituted 3 on 3 to help prevent more games from ending in a shootout. SO GET RID OF IT!!!! What is the problem here?

Take the winning goal as a perfect example. There is no chance in hell that Parenteau is coasting toward the goal like a ****ing turtle in a real game situation. None. Zero. Even if there wasn't a player within 100 feet of him, he would never pull that type of garbage during the actual game. So why is it allowed to decide games in this ridiculous gimmick? It's absurd on so many levels.

I honestly can't take it anymore. I almost would prefer them to lose in regulation then to be subjected to this garbage. At least it would feel like a legitimate loss.

Good question...maybe they don't want to do HNL this Saturday up against the 30-hour pregame for the Super Bowl :sarcasm:

It's backwards day.

Kings are wearing their white jersey's at home too. Not sure what that's all about.

Hopefully us losing to a cream of the crap is part of the backwards day festivities.

Not from me. I think we should re-sign both of them. They've been good for us this year, and I think they'll both come with reasonable price tags.

Of course, I hope we are in a playoff spot, so nobody complains. If we are in a playoff spot at deadline day, that's huge.

They don't want ties back, and the union won't let them play OT until there is a winner. Pretty much that.

Maybe it's because I'm a big soccer fan but there's nothing wrong with ties. Why have a really hard fought 65 minute game end in an individual skill side show....

A tie is fine.

I don't know for sure if a higher percentage of our games have ended in OT or shootout, it's probably slightly in favor of OT games though.

Funny enough, I was told that 75% of games will end in OT because of the 3 on 3. It still seems that it's closer to 50% though. Maybe slightly more than 50%

We've been in too many shootouts for my liking. This is the seventh maybe? We;re still on pace to go 11 shootouts this year. How many last year? About the same? 13 in 13-14, I remember just because we were 0-13.

That's our 8th shootout. On pace for 12-13 this year. TOO MUCH!

A tie is fine.

Our fans want it and our fans are excited about it, that's the response you'll get from Gary. And the apologists say well nobody ever sits down during a shootout.

It's like the DH in the American League, it's fruitless to complain about it. It's here to stay at this point and it also helps create more semi-artifical parity to give out 'loser points', which is the real reason it's not going anywhere.

Then how about extending 3-on-3 OT?

Is it 5:00 minutes right now? Make it 10:00!! Do something!!

I'm sick of this ALLSTAR-GAME-EVENT deciding crucial points in the regular season standings!!

There is nothing wrong with ties. The most popular sport in this country by a wide margin is okay with ties. Granted, they're extremely rare, but still. If ties can exist in the NFL, they can exist in the NHL where they were the norm for decades. The shootout is bush league.

If neither team can beat the other in 65 minutes of play, it's at tie. Plain and simple. 1 point each.

I seriously hate this ****ing ****. Drives me nuts.

It is, but North American sports fans apparently hate them. That is the image they go with, so they are not coming back anytime soon.

Since ties aren't coming back, shootouts are here to stay sadly. Only thing they can do is limit them as much as possible. I think 4 on 4 then 3 on 3 would of been the proper way to go in a longer OT, but 3 on 3 is working.

Exactly! One point each and both teams MOVE ON.

THE END.

But nooooooo....The fans are "excited" by it, says Gary Buttman.

Bulls--t!! Why not take a poll(a real one, not a FIXED one) and see if the fans want the shootout to remain? See what they say...

You do realize that wouldn't of changed tonight's result for us. We still only get a point.

Josefson seemed like the only automatic in the shootout.

If he doesn't score, there's no one else on the team with a large enough sample size that's over 33% career.

Stempniak was 31% before tonight's, even Cammalleri is under 30%, Ruutu was like 38% or something. I don't even remember him going many times for us though.

Henrique is like wasting a shootout attempt, he's 2 for 16 or 17 career. That's probably the lowest percentage out of anyone with that many attempts in the league.

Zajac was over 30% at one time early on. He hasn't scored one in years though, and I don't think he's went since Pete's been gone.

this sucks even more because Kinkaid played very well tonight which is not something I expected

Agreed. If this was the Kinkaid we got in St Louis, this is a blowout.

It's not like the scoring chances were much better that night than they were tonight, and it was 35/36 shots both nights. Aside from St Louis being a much better quality opponent, it's not like they had any better scoring chances that night than Toronto had tonight.

He didn't have to face many breakaways or odd man rushes either night. Goal 1 tonight was very similar to goal 1 against St Louis. A PP goal (technically not a PP goal tonight, as it expired seconds before) from almost the blue paint.
