Vegas asked for Wilson and Grubauer in exchange for Schmidt

Well it's not like it turned out bad for Washington but what i do know is Vegas was better off with Schmidt.

This is another example where at the end of the day they had no clue how the team was going to turn out. GMGM said they liked Schmidt and for that reason their asking price for a deal was too high.

However, looking back, now they'd be dumb to trade their #1 dman for Wilson and Grubauer.

Grubauer was available for free in the expansion draft.

Washington would send Tom Wilson to Vegas, in exchange for Vegas selecting Peter Grubauer in the expansion draft. Similar to Minnesota sending Alex Tuch to Minnesota in exchange for Vegas selecting Erik Haula. Washington would be making the trade with the intentions of protecting Schmidt, while Minnesota did make the trade with the intentions of picking Dumba.

McPhee received a lot of criticism for the expansion draft, but he clearly made a lot of good calls as well.

Didn't Grubuar basically save there asses at the back end of the season, too? Schmidt in my mind after this last year holds way more value than Wilson. If they still had Schmidt it wouldn't be as bad if Carlson were to leave through FA.

Worked out quite well for both teams. Wilson is an important part of the Caps 1st line and Grubauer was really needed during the season. Schmidt wouldnt have been put in the same place in washington. He would be their 4th defenceman and its not sure he would have close to the same value or season he has had with the Knights.

This kinda also confirms what the rumours said about the Caps wanting to keep him, but the price was to high.

Not really suprising. Always thought it was something in that way.

Schmidt as a player is now right where all we Caps-fans knew he would. But still if you offer the same swap for us today im going to guess less than half of us takes it. I wouldnt. And its not about the value or anything, its team needs and team structure. No matter how weird it sounds, we need Wilson more than we need Schmidt to be where we are. And obviously vice versa, there will be no Vegas fan that would commit to that swap today, rightfully so.

Unfortunately the whole scenario could have been avoided by doing right decisions earlier on, or having the right idea on where you are with your pending contract negotiations like most of us armchair-gm’s did and just by looking at the computer screen.. but at that point it still comes up to that we would have had to let either Wilson or Burakovsky go unprotected. It propably would have been Wilson, based on that comment about Bura’s potential and scoring 2 big ones in g6.

In big picture GMBM has done great job though and we are playing in the Stanley Cup Finals, so he gets a break here :)

The proposal makes McPhee sound like a bozo. If MacLellan had protected Schmidt by going with 4F/4D, McPhee would've been able to choose one of Wilson/Grubauer from the unprotected list. There was no reason for MacLellan even to consider agreeing.

That's a huge price. Did he ask that much of other teams?

Peter? There’s a Peter? Is that Philip’s twin brother?

Yeah Grubauer played really well late in the season. Also him playing so much during the season may have kept Holtby fresh enough so he could pull it together for this playoff run. I think people underestimate how important a solid 2nd goalie is, so your starter can get rest during the season and not wear down too much in the playoffs.

Caps fans have been beside themselves about losing Schmidt but they were going to lose someone good. Pretty much every hypothetical scenario is unpleasant. Who knows how it plays out if they do it differently and if we still make it to the SCF. This trade price is pretty steep to keep him. Also keep in mind the Caps probably will get a good pick out of Grub if they trade him this offseason.

This is just one of those things. Nobody in the NHL ever wanted Nate Schmidt other than the Caps/McPhee. The Caps got him as an undrafted and had brought him to development camps and tipped their hand of their interest. No other gm would see a lead defenseman in Nate Schmidt.

Meanwhile McPhee went a long way to getting fired in DC because he clearly preferred Wilson for Forsberg. This was a reason why Forsberg was traded. So, its all sort of a wash

lol, no thanks jeff, way too steep a price. Washington made the right choice. was a win win for both teams with the deal not going through.

Kempny has been really good for Washington and while Schmidt might be a bit better, the gap isn't that big and WSH got him for just a 3rd.

And Schmidt is 27 in a month and going to get a big raise after next season, money the Caps won't have if they manage to keep Carlson. The core of Orlov/Niskanen, Djoos, maybe Carlson, re-sign Kempny for a million per and one or two of the kids in Hershey. Caps are just fine without Nate Schmidt.

Good thing Washington said no to that for Vegas' sake, Schmidt has been massive for them and I think that would have been a really bad trade off for the Knights. A backup to Fleury and a top-9 powerforward isn't worth giving up a legit top pair defenseman.
I think it's more fitting having an individual with the user name of Wes McCauley providing a like to a pro Vegas post. I suppose a Marc Joannette like should not be far behind as well.

Schmidt is a lot better than Kempny.
