Leafs fan coming in peace (Smashville has been my bandwagon go to the past several years)....

Goaltending is arguably our biggest organizational strength (Bernier is a solid starting goalie, Reimer is a serviceable starter albeit needs a change of scenery, Bibeau is quickly becoming a legitimately exciting prospect to replace Reimer.

Forwards isn't a flaring weakness..... centermen are (a case could be made for Kadri and Holland be converted into wingers, Nylander too) but we are looking pretty decent on the wings.

Defence is our major Achilles heel, some decent #4-5 guys in the pipeline but Reilly is the only guy with legitimate top pairing potential (Gardiner I don't see ever turning the corner into becoming that guy). I'm sure Jones is the make our break target if Kessel is being discussed. Would make for a potentially great deal for both teams IF Nashville go's all in for a cup run this season and the next 2 (imo they should go for it with Weber and Rinne in their prime's and the team firing on all cylinders, Kessel is also locked up to a reasonable contract and will balance the team out.If the deal is made bigger Franson could be a current replacement for Jones. Jones is a stud but gotta give to get and elite goalscorer (who would thrive in a team like Nashville where the biggest spotlight won't be solely on him) IMO a late 1st/Smith/Watson, stuff like that wouldn't cut it. Jones looks capable of taking the torch from Weber when he begins to decline, but trading him now for a guy like Kessel very well could be the final piece to land a Stanley cup in the near future instead.

This heavy smoke COULD just be Santa/Winnik/Franson but I really hope its a blockbuster for both teams.... just feels like the right time and place for these 2 teams to make franchise defining moves....I can't see the leafs pro scout so hard right now if it was just for those secondary pieces (who should be individually dealt for draft picks).

Maybe I should have said in the pipeline you have no goalie depth, my bad.

I hope if Poile is going for it he GOES FOR IT. Hopefully we go for a big fish Does not matter if it is Kessel or not but I want a top line RW or second line one to move Neal back up.

Overall, I think the obvious theme heading into the deadline is some sort of shakeup to the bottom 6. If that's adding a top-6 and moving some down, so be it, but the bottom has been completely invisible for the better half of the season now. Whether it's premium PK'ers or some scoring, something needs to give down there.

Something I pointed out on the trade board--

Yes Franson is due for a raise, but he's also very good at what he is...a solid second pairing d-man who is better than given credit for defensively and fantastic on the power play. You could swap out Franson and Jones in the lineup NOW and not miss a beat, the impact will be in a few years when Jones has improved into what he's supposed to be or at least closer to it.

However, at that point, and at the point he needs to get paid...are the Predators going to pay a second pairing defenseman 6-8M per? Will he even be interested in staying here and playing in the shadow of a top pairing that is both young\prime and signed for a long time?

It's dealing from strength...if you can get Kessel, get Franson(and potentially extend him at second pairing money...and then figure out your center situation, you're basically set for the next 7-10 years.

I like the idea of getting Jagr, but I'd probably play him on the third line, not because he's a third liner, but to create match-up hell. Other teams have to decide to play their third pairing against Forsberg-Ribiero-Smith, Wilson-Fisher-Neal, or Cullen-Jarnkrok-Jagr. He could probably put up big points with that matchup.

Maybe too many moves, but I think it would create a solid lineup and I'm just doing this out of boredom. The 3rd line should be able to generate offense and the 4th line would be brutal to play against.

In: Jagr, Santorelli, Neil, Timonen or Franson.
Traded/Scratched: Beck, Bourque, Cullen, Jokinen, Volchenkov, Bartley.

If Timonen comes back healthy and plays well I'd love to have him back. I'm not going to try to speculate on what each trade would entail, mainly because it's never going to happen and because I mainly did this for fun.

Forsberg - Ribeiro - Smith
Wilson - Fisher - Neal
Jagr - Järnkrok - Santorelli
Neil - Gaustad - Nystrom

Josi - Weber
Ekholm - Ellis
Timonen/Franson - Jones

Poile was on 104.5, yesterday, before the game and was asked a question about possible trade deadline moves...

To summarize his response...
  • Our Depth is good, but would like to possibly add a defenseman and maybe another depth forward.
  • He is conscious of the team chemistry and what the coaches have done this year and how well the guys are playing; so he doesn't want to mess that up.
  • In regards to a potential forward- top 2 lines are pretty good, so he is looking more for a player with some experience. If they had won a Stanley Cup already that would be lovely! The forward could be a PK guy or a specialist of somesort, not necessarily a pure skill or star player.

Full Audio of interview

Interesting to hear what he had to say and what all he is looking for with all of the rumors and talk flying around.

Poile isn't wanting Kessel at the deadline it is Franson and Santorelli or Winnick. If Ellis' injury is more serious then we know or is taking much longer to heal then getting Franson would be a great move. Then when Ellis is back one can move to the left side. The depth we'd have on defense would be ridiculous. If Franson won't resign so be it if he does then we could trade Ellis or Jones.

If Franson or his partner, whether that be Ellis or Jones, can play their offhand then I would love to have him back. He's not the best defensively but the kid can hit as well as Volchenkov, may be a little faster and has a far better shot. You'd lose some blocked shots but gain more offense. If he performs the way I think he can then I'd love to keep him at a reasonable price. Do you want a stacked defense?

Josi - Weber
Ekholm - Ellis
Franson - Jones

Ellis is signed for cheap and Jones is still on his ELC. Can't remember where Ekholm stands but I'm willing to bet he'll sign a fair deal to stick with his Swedish buddies. If this was the situation then the 2nd and 3rd pairings would be getting pretty close to even time. Unless Franson wants too much, then it would be the best d-core in the league. The powerplay would also change. Do you want Ellis' cannon, Franson's seeing eye wrister, Jones being Jones? Pick a combination and you can change as needed depending on the situation.

i'm just not sold on franson being a smart pickup for us. only way it makes sense to me is if we are trading jones or ellis still.

Exactly. It makes the Klein trade even more mystifying as Ellis, Ekholm , and Jones are all better than at the time of that trade ....

Is Poile watching the same team? The Preds are 5-7-6 against teams in the top 3 of their divisions (https://www.nashvillepost.com/blogs...extends_predators_struggles_against_top_teams)

That is just silly. The Predators are 13-4-3 against the central and it is known as being one of if not the best division in hockey. Way to small of a sample siz ehtough as far as I'm concerned. I would say however we do not seem to match up well against the Ducks and the Sharks. I think some of it has to do with the size they have at forward. I wouldn't put to much stock into those numbers...
