Re the expansion draft business: the fact that Kalinin is a second year signee means that he does not have to be exposed. But does that also mean he cannot be exposed if the Leafs choose to use him to fill a 70 game in the last two seasons slot, if they so choose? He is an RFA at the end of the season so he would have to be re-signed, but given that eventuality, he does meet the criteria in the clause about exposing NHL forwards.

I'm guessing also, that the Marlies blueline is a bit crowed now with Corrado taking one of those D spots.

exempt guys are exempt. There's no getting around that, they're not allowed to expose him even if they wanted to.

then why not just claim him on the waivers? Why the hell trade one of our assets to the devils if Kalinin is exempt for expansion draft?

I do not get this move.

NHL limits the number of contacts each team can carry. Likely nobody wanted Loov anymore than anyone wanted Kalinin.

that's one way to understand it. But do you have an authoritative link to that effect?

the following rules were approved for the 2017 expansion draft:

Protected lists

* clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the expansion draft:

A) seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender

b) eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender

* all players who have currently effective and continuing "no movement" clauses at the time of the expansion draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

* all first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

player exposure requirements

* all clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the expansion draft:

I) one defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more nhl games the prior season or played in 70 or more nhl games in the prior two seasons.

Ii) two forwards who are a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more nhl games the prior season or played in 70 or more nhl games in the prior two seasons.

Iii) one goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

* players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club's player exposure requirements, unless approval is received from the nhl. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection by the league.

Just a depth move for the Marlies. They needed better center depth.

It might signal a Gauthier/Froese call up in the near future.

Aww. I liked Loov... but I guess the writing was on the wall. Too bad. When he first came over, it looked as if he might be a late round gem.

Kalinin appears to be AHL depth. Sucks that he's exempt from the expansion draft. We'll still need to find somebody other than Smith to expose and meet the 70/40 requirement.

Saw a tweet from 1 of the insiders on my twitter feed a few days back. Can't find it now because I don't know which insider it was.

Kalinin is only 4 months older than Loov...

Neither is really a prospect. Swap of two AHL depth guys with no upside.

Pretty much. A contract for a contract.

We needed better center depth and Loov was expendable with Dermott and Nielsen playing really well. Valiev must be close to be back as well, so right there are your top 3 LHDs.

Kalinin also adds some size down the middle for the Marlies.

I thought so at first, too.., but there might be an extra "possibility", too..

Zaitsev has played with him.. and I'm wondering if Marchenko and other prospects have, too..?
Might also be looking at adding another Russian in this coming Draft, too..

froese is day to dayk, so makes sense to get depth + clear a contract for the deadline in case.
