Oh, guy was useless? Who knew. Did he also do the "thinks he's way more skilled than he is" thing with fancy moves that just end up losing him the puck? Perhaps, wasn't watching very many games.

In any case, not a great player, and definitely not worth a 1st. Way better players were available for only a 2nd. As predicted at the time of the trade.

At the time, this deal was ok. It was a reasonably tough, defensive player, which was absolutely considered the need of the team.

However, with Tavares getting injured, our needs suddenly turned to offense. Unfortunate situation, but it was a somewhat smart deal at the time.

Obviously would have preferred an Iaffalo or similar, but clearly those types weren't available (and rightly so). So, you make the best decision available at the time.

Unfortunately this time, it failed, epically as some have noted.

**** happens!

As a Habs fan I’ll take the high road.

Leafs have Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly all in their primes. Tavares isn’t quite as good as he once was but he is still a great player. The Leafs are in their Cup window and took a chance.

Believe me all Leafs fans reading this; if the Leafs stayed at status quo and tried to build the team through the draft you would all be mad at the organization for not going for it. It’s better to go for it and fail than to not go for it and wonder what if.

Jeff Carter had 5pts in 6 games.
Sam Bennett had 5pts in 5 games
Taylor Hall has 4 in 7.

All cost less than a first.

A first for a grinder seemed okay at the time?

Nick Foligno was obviously playing through an injury.

Foligno is still a beastly big-game player, this is just bad luck that he got hurt.

If you didn't like the trade in principle beforehand, sure. Maybe you were right. But it isn't really confirmed by his play in any way, because he wasn't even close to 100%.

He was good for Toronto when healthy. It's a shame he got hurt. IDK if it would have made a big enough difference to win the series, but I think he would have helped. Unlucky break for him and Toronto.

Wouldn't be surprised if he took a dirt cheap deal to return there for a year.
