I have been out of the loop for a few months but saw the Kiviharju injury news and man that sucks..hopefully he makes a speedy recovery and have a good later half of the season. I'm looking at the possible names for this years team and I think this team can be better then last season even if it doesn't mean much lol. Yes the defence is close to if not horrific but forwards should be better and goaltending has potential to be really good. Is Lämsä still the head coach? I think I have read somewhere that K Jalonen took over or something but I can be wrong lol.

What do we have on him? I see he's been in Kärpät for a while hopefully Marjamäki hasn't influenced him too much hehe
Nobody hasn't owe jack-shit for Lauri Mikkola.
But the morons in liitto ( Finnish hockey association )
are all brain dead so they don't know what winning coaching actually means.

Only what matters is that money comes in doors and windows
and everyone has fun and cool-aid tastes good with Cuban cigar.

Question is now if it's between Kokko and Vali. Vinni as a third and Vedenpää out?
Vali seems to be a riser. Does he have any similarities with his Forssa idol Saros?

I think in any case it's not likely that there would be two goalies from the same club.

Vedenpää can be Kärpät backup during the WJC when Kokko is missing games.

Kärpät could loan a goalie from somewhere but Vedenpää is not a "final piece of the puzzle" of any kind, Finland can afford to leave him home.

But it's been done once before, the 2017 tournament. Veini Vehviläinen & Markus Ruusu, both from JYP and JYP hired Jussi Olkinuora to replace them.

Pulkkinen to become or our replacement and takes the opportunity to shine when Kiviharju is injured? What a sunshine story.
Huovila and Elmeri Laakso seems to have a opportunity to take a spot in the final roster as well.
They have impressed.
Laakso was injured a long time but Huovila is somewhat of a exciting late bloomer, just like Pulkkinen. I mean the guy played for Vantaa a short while ago.

Helenius was Finland's best player at 5 Nations tournamet. He is Finland's #1 center now and will be one of their best players at WJC.

Pulkkinen is awesome. Huge guy, but mobile. Good hands and shot. Likes to play offensively, but I don't think his defensive game is bad. I'm quite sure he will make the WJC team. Only concern is that he has played 0 Liiga games.

This years WJC's is starting to excite me a whole lot. Not because Finland should be considered a given medal contender this year, perhaps the opposite. But more because things feel really uncertain and that we have some potential late bloomers and also future top picks like Helenius who could rise or fall in a future draft etc.
Lot's of what if's and in a way? Pretty exciting.

Kumpulainens production has come alive. Koskipirtti with not too shabby numbers in the NCAA. Same could be said about Väisänens offense from D. So the NA players are raising their stocks. Not Uronen perhaps but those others at least.
Even if Finlands biggest problem will be D's that can defend in a good way it seems that we could have some producing D's on PP like Pulkkinen and Kärki and who knows about the other Väisänen as well.
Exciting times fellers.

About a month to go

Jani Nyman - Konsta Helenius - Joakim Kemell(C)
Aleksanteri Kaskimäki(A) - Oiva Keskinen - Lenni Hämeenaho
Rasmus Kumpulainen - Jere Lassila - Emil Hemming
Max Koskipirtti - Tom Leppä - Samu Bau
Kasper Halttunen

Arttu Kärki - Otto Salin
Emil Pieniniemi - Veeti Väisänen
Kalle Kangas - Kasper Kulonummi(A)
Jesse Pulkkinen

Niklas Kokko
Eemil Vinni
Visa Vedenpää

Going for size and reach, we are not losing any board battles and forwards with long sticks can help that weak defense. Those extra centers should also bring more "defensive-mindset" to the lines. Pucks to net and 1 player always driving straight to the war zone. Gritty, blue-collar hockey.

Noa Vali should honestly be considered for 2nd or 3rd keeper atleast. Better stats in u20 than Vinni in Mestis or Vedenpää in u20. Also decent stats in Liiga since he had to come play there as a sort of emergency choice. Definitely showed that he is a very promising goalie. Not even the stats, but his play overall is very calm and promising.

Finally a take from someone else. Looks decent.
Just think Kulonummi looked slow against Sweden in that last game a week ago with somewhat weak defending. Am I the only one? Interesting considering Pulkkinen being a riser.
Has Veeti Väisänen improved this year?

Sounds like Uronen is out until after world juniors for knee surgery.
Was probably not even considered anymore.

I believe these guys could end up a bit like Saros, Husso, Lankinen but ten years after. Let's hope so. Probably 1-2 NHL goalies if lucky. Even if no one is near Saros at the same age nor (most likely) in the future.
But I hear you, has not been worse than Vedenpää nor Vinni. But the coaches seem to like Vinni. Kokko will probably get the opportunity first though.

Mikkola is total nobody as a coach but 10 points for him to being honest.
