The Jets really can't afford to - unless they're moving a significant amount salary somewhere else.
The Jets will have a possible (likely?) $3.7M in bonuses to pay on next year's ELC contracts if things continue as they have been with Laine, Connor and Roslovic. So they'll try to stay at least that much under the cap to avoid triggering an overage in 2019-20 when they have to sign Laine and Connor. They might be freeing up some cap space
Matthias - $2,125,000
Enstrom - $5,750,000
Dano - $850,000
Hendricks - $700,000
Hutchinson - $1,150,000
Trouba - $2,812,500 ( assuming he still wants to leave )
but they also have to pay
Hellebuyck
Morrissey
Trouba ( assuming he wants to stay )
Lowry
Ehlers ( gets a big raise to $6,000,000 next season )
- so yeah, it could be tricky to keep Stastny even though he won't get the $7,000,000 he's currently signed for 4 years ago IMO.
Stastny is a good second / third line center. We've got him for about 3 months and it cost us Erik Foley, our (late) first round pick this year and a 4th round pick in 2020.stastny is a top line center, and the jets got him for a late 1st round pick.

Stastny certainly isn’t a 3C, and we don’t necessarily end up trading the 4th round pick.Stastny is a good second / third line center. We've got him for about 3 months and it cost us Erik Foley, our (late) first round pick this year and a 4th round pick in 2020.

If we can move Mason, Matthias, Myers and/or Enström we should be able to do it. Our defense is far too expensive already. Bring Poolman in and Niku also if he’s ready. Should have plenty of room to sign Stastny if we manage to move some of the expensive pieces.
I think next year is pretty wide open and a lot depends on what happens down the stretch and the playoffs. If we come real close or God help my heart win, then maybe you load up for the now and do things like bridging your RFA's to hold onto guys like Statsny. If we go a round and then get pushed out rather easily maybe you have a little further time line and reinvest in the youth. There will be a lot of interesting discussions over the off season. If Stastny can be resigned, Chevy will have to start making tough decisions next year. The question will probably be whether he is worth more to the team than Perreault. We likely can only afford one of them. It will come down to two things, the first is whether he can even sign Stastny and the second is how Stastny continues to play with Ehlers and Laine. If he continues to be such a good fit with those two, then he is probably worth more to us the Perreault. We are likely going to have to make these kind of decisions regularly over the next few years.

Not if he gets re signed it isn't.
I really like his game, and he's clearly a great fit. However, if we bow out in the first round....its a bad trade.
