Jim Watson has been, and still is, a career Politician (AKA Public Sector).

He pontificated in the local media recently about comments made By Sens Owner, and the head of the RLC, who is in deep negotiations with the NCC over the re-development of Lebreton Flats...... on his concerns about the Condo market in Ottawa, and specifically in the areas surrounding the Lebreton Flats site, that will have an impact on the planned Condos that are part of the RLG plans to develop Lebreton Flats, where the new Arena is planned.

There are legitimate concerns.

REEVELY: Melnyk is right to be worried about financing LeBreton project with condos

The Mayor, a career politician, has as much knowledge about the Condo market, as he does about brain surgery.

But being a politician, he had to make some dumb comments about the state of the negotiations, But the NCC Chief Executive said the negotiations were going fine......... But Watson made in sound like it's headed for hell in a hand basket and he's going to confront Melnyk.............. he's just grandstanding in an election year, because when is comes to the Condo market, he's in way over his head.

I find it very likely that the mayor has access to a great deal of information about the condo market in the city of which he has been mayor for 8 years.

Would you be happier if he had worked as a criminal defense lawyer 20 years ago, and accrued that all important private sector experience?

1) The article you are linking to has literally nothing to do about Jim Watson.

2) If you don't think that mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson, in his 11 years of service as Mayor on top of many years as a city councilor, and the city of Ottawa as a whole I might add, doesn't have experts about residential and commercial development on staff at City Hall from which Jim Watson can be not only briefed, but thoroughly educated on such matters before making public statements about them...
... and then on top of that, assume that Watson - a CAREER POLITICIAN as you have mentioned so often today - would make public statements at this level without not only first consulting with those experts, but also, in what far more likely is the reality here, had those statements written for him, or at least have talking points provided to him, by a writer working specifically within city hall with a lifetime of education and experience in this field... then you are one of the most politically illiterate people I have ever met, and

3) what the hell are you even talking about at this point?

I'm confused here. Writing off good old Jim as knowing nothing about real estate development, ignoring the fact that he can surround himself with these people, but then annoiting EM as some kind of expert? Did I miss the part where good old Eug has made himself a fortune in real estate development? Oh wait, you know what he did, he surrounded himself with real estate people too.

It's like when players go into contract negotiations and you hear the agent or mgmt whining in the press. That's when you know, uh oh, things cant be going well and they must want to galvanize public opinion. Cant wait for the book to be written to learn the details of the current pressure game.

And find out how incompetent a whole bunch of people involved are?

My cynicism says that 12 or 8 or even 6 months ago, the mayor would have gone with a no comment or something more diplomatic. The election year and the chance to get some hits in on an easy target made it too irresistible to pass up.

Oh I absolutely agree. And I’m sure the feelings are mutual. This could be personal as much as political, which made Jim a bit less, uhm, filtered, in his words to the press.

I'm sure it is personal. They've crossed paths on opposite sides of several business scenarios during their respective tenureships. casinos. Lansdowne. soccer. Melnyk has been looking for additional revenue streams for 10 years or so. let's hope lebreton works out

That would imply that he has some degree of control over these boards, so no. He's more like this boards' Sean Hannity.

Tnouc Alucard = Count Dracula spelled backwards, sort of.

Not sort of, exactly.

You're the one who has misspelt my moniker.

Wouldn't "exactly" be Dracula Count (or Alucard Tnuoc)? Not that it matters...

It does to some people????

could have gone with ƆOUИT ᗡЯAƆU⅃A, or maybe A⅃UƆAЯᗡ TИUOƆ, I guess, and make them happy.

Well then it would be a mirror image (or variant there of) as opposed to just spelt backwards. One things for sure though, it would be a pain in the but typing in you're user name in to log on if you had to used alternate characters...

Would Melnyk be the chair?

Edit: this was supposed to be in response to JD1’s post about Dirty Harry but I messed up the execution.

I picked Zorf as my username because it's easy to type and it's also a stupid name that means nothing, so it reflects my opinion and contribution to most discussions.

seems like discussion is picking up in Calgary again on a new arena. Talks fell apart based on this cost breakdown

1/3 paid by team
1/3 paid by city
1/3 paid by ticket surcharge

with the team believing the ticket surcharge is actually already their revenue stream

it's interesting that in effect Calgary has a 1/3rd commitment from the city and talks are resuming with the team looking for more.

In Edmonton Katz got huge money from the city for that facility

How is this market different than those markets?

As sports fans, why should we not be advocating that public money help offset arena construction in this market? This is how it gets done essentially everywhere in North America

Melnyk has been pretty clear he hasn't asked for money and Watson has been pretty clear he isn't getting any.

The arena is going to cost 500 to 600 hundred. The money has to come from somewhere. Either Melnyk's pocket or financed and if financed then you'v got the interest charges.

It's interesting to me that many here say he's broke and doesn't have the money. From what I can tell from assessing our situation versus others, he's dealing with a pretty hostile environment as far as making a corporate sports investment
