defense for next year

Lindgren Fox
Jones Trouba
Miller Schneider

it is a shame Jones is not on the playoff roster. His skating would help the Rangers in the playoffs getting the puck out of the zone.

Keep Lundkvist as depth or try to use him as a draft trade with their own 1st round pick to try to move up in the 1st round to draft a big physical center.

This series has really exposed our bottom 6.

What are our thoughts on Giordano for ~$4M to solidify the third pair?

Fox-Lindgren
Trouba-Miller
Schneider-Giordano

Nemeth
Jones/Lundkvist

For one year IF we can fit him sure. Not even remotely making the same mistake we did by giving Nemeth three years when he should have got 1 like Ian Cole. Also what do we do with Nemeth? Another buy out? UGH.
And no team is taking him for nothing

Jones would get absolutely man handled in the playoffs in his own end. Whether or not the Rangers win tonight, they're ready to win now. They need to fix the third pairing though. Braun was not even close to the answer
he has the escapability and puck moving to make this irrelevant imo

just because he’s 5’ 10” doesn’t mean he can’t play

and what, the 2 inches Gio has on him make that big a difference ?

Escapability and puck moving don't mean anything when you don't have the puck. I'm not denying he's able to escape the zone. But flip pucks deep on him and go to work along the boards and he's not coming away with a puck, it's that simple. He's too easy to play against.

Teams are making simple plays and getting pucks deep constantly in the playoffs. Newer generation, smaller dmen like Jones get absolutely abused. Schneider has been getting torched and he's bigger than Jones. It's a matter of bulking up and being miserable for a forward to try and pivot around you. KAM does well because of his reach. Fox uses his IQ to defend but very few possess that ability. Lindgren is just a beast. Jones doesn't really have any of these traits

We've repeatedly seen big/physical defensemen absolutely abused in this environment.

Our only defensemen in this series who haven't been pretty terrible are 5'10" Ryan Lindgren and 4'9" Adam Fox.

It's almost as of the best to way to retrieve pucks is skating towards them.

The problem with Jones in this series is having to go up against Malkin, Crosby, Carter physically behind or in front of the net. He doesn't have the mental positioning yet like Fox does to make up for the size and strength disadvantage. Heck, we've seen Fox get absolutely worked over every time he releases the puck. Remember in the playoffs, late hits basically don't exist.

and yet Fox has been our best defensemen by about 10,000 miles (I measured)

Offensively they are very similar. But Jones does not read the play well enough in his own zone, nor does he leverage as well as fox. Thats where the comparison starts. The moment Jones doesn't have the puck on his stick its going to be a problem.

However...if/when Turk dressed 7 d, it should have been Jones to dress. Because if you are trailing, he could help with the transition and at that point you arent worried about the negatives.

sure but that’s why he’s going to start on the bottom pair and not get 28 minutes a night like Fox, no? so he gets a chance to work on his weaknesses and keep developing

Miller is getting demoted to the bottom pair? Not happening. Jones will be there or Miller will be promoted to the top pair.

They are not remotely similar offensively. The difference between Fox and Jones is probably about the same as Jones and like Nemeth.
