Weber. Based on that, I guess we'll need to trade Gardiner, Rielly, and/or Zaitsev to pick one up.

There's only been 2, Subban and Weber and they were traded for each other. Folks need to get passed the idea that one can be acquired via trade. It's not happening.

If we can run 3 reliable pairings, that’s all we need. Right now we’re looking to be developing very well, no need to stress for a “#1”.

Dermott and Liljegren both have “top 4” potential, and with what we have that should equal 6 reliable Dmen. :)

How good of a prospect is he ?
Top end potential = #2, realistic = #3

Pretty equal to Dermott, just way different play styles

Even if he becomes like a #5, he'd still be on / deserve to be on our #1PP

Weber, Subban, Burns, McDonagh, Buff would be the start. Then you can look at Hamilton, Hamonic, etc..

only Weber/Subban and Pronger come to mind who were already #1 Dmen at the time of the trade, yea Burns/McD/Buff have developed into a #1 they did so after they were traded and at the time of the trade I don't think they were expected to be nearly as good as they became. heck Buff wasn't even a Dmen at the time.

You're right, Buff was a solid winger. McDonagh was a blue chip prospect, that was a surprisingly dumb trade from the second it happened.

Part of my thought in posting was to show these guys can come out of nowhere. I also wonder where I'd draw the line for #1's right now. It gets real foggy around ~15

Depending on the development of Rielly over the next year and a half and the fortune of the LA Kings, I could see the Leafs pursuing Drew Doughty in a Rielly+Kapanen+pick+throw in.

We can hope for Doughty as a UFA but I would not hold my breath on it.

Draft and develop is the only way to really do it.
