Doughty has also gone out of his way to say how he and some other players wouldn't enjoy playing in a game high profile location like Toronto where the media is in your face every day

Yeah he was pretty clear he likes where he is. Can’t blame him really.

Jones and Larsson. We don't like the implications of those trades though.

Could include Hamonic too, although the footnote would have to be "2nd pairing" defender.

All of these are recent trades (excluding Pronger) that reflect market conditions. Of course I expect the pushback and denial - not going through another cycle of that however.

Chara was not dealt from the Sens to Boston and I don't think you'd call him a no.1 before then.

The New York Islanders were expected to be among the most active teams on the NHL draft day, and they've pulled the trigger on the first blockbuster of the day, acquiring Alexei Yashin from the Ottawa Senators.
The Sens receive towering defenceman Zdeno Chara, forward Bill Muckalt and, most significantly, the Islanders' first-round draft pick - second overall - which they used to select the most highly-touted North American prospect in the draft, forward Jason Spezza of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires.

And here's a little secret about seth jones (and werenski) - they play 2nd pair usage, while David Savard takes the brunt of the tough minutes.

I'd suffer through having Jones and Werenski on our team.

Why do people keep bringing up Larsson?

he's no better than hainsey.

Yep.

And we didn't have to trade one of the best wingers in the NHL to get him either.

And you're absolutely right about guys like Jones too. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a guy like that on the Leafs but they're not thebinstant game changers that a lot of folks presume them to be.

Calgary has picked up 2 solid top 4 rhD in Hamilton & Hamonic for under market value. Hamilton would be the perfect fit for us imo. 6.6, 210 plays lots of minutes including specialty teams. I think he will develop to top pair D if he isnt there already.

All these guys we keep lusting after have numbers no better than what we have, often in more sheltered roles

I still think a half decent number 2/3 guy with a bit of size would be all we'd need, then just wait till the guys we have are ready

Isn't Hamilton kind of a rich man's Cody Franson? Also funny how Edmonton was in the market for a defenseman and basically paid the same price Calgary did for Hamilton with Griffin Reinhart. Ouch.

How do you trade away Gardiner then end up with him on the second pairing? Give me some of what you're smoking.
Do you not understand the definition of the word "maybe" or have the common sense to understand what I'm saying? Or, more likely, did you attempt to be funny by adding zero value to the thread and making yourself look incompetent?

I wouldn't even want Gardiner in our top four if we signed Doughty, I added him assuming others would say they would like to keep him. Clearly I put more thought into my posts than you do.

I'm not convinced the Oilers organization is any better or smarter. They just have McDavid.

100% bang on and looking at zone start this year we are seeing a pattern again.

I like our D we do need one more who can play a good simply game to shore up our overall D corp.

Babs is a good coach and the hammer will be dropping on a D man to make an example of him and send a message that silkiness will not be tolerated. I see us moving away from one of our current roster D man in Carrick and moving him and calling up Dermott soon rather then later. The only thing keeping him in the line up is that he is right handed.

Still see #1 potential in Rielly. He might have leveled out a bit right now but I think he will take another couple of development spurts forward in his development in the coming years.
People might need to be remembered that he is only 23!

I said this before but I see him as our defender equivalent to Nylander.
They both got elite skating, nice hands and good vision. Natural skills you either have or dont. Then they are also very willing to hit the gym and train like a pro. But the combination of great hockey smarts, great hockey skills and high work rate along with being very coachable means they will always keep getting better. Sometimes it is the little things they will improve that will almost go unnoticed, other times it is something major they fix and it takes them to the next level.

But players like Nylander and Rielly will always keep raising their own ceiling.

But is he saying that generally, or for himself? Doughty seems like one of the few who'd love it here. Unlike say, Stamkos,Tavares,Nash etc. Guys who the media always brought up. It's probably wishful thinking on my part. Doughty would be best ufa signing...ever for this team?

It's certainly up for interpretation, but reading these quotes I definitely don't get the sense he'd be interested in coming to a high pressure market like Toronto
