It's a relief that they managed to do the most obvious thing in the world. Says a lot about my confidence in the franchise that I was shocked to see this and nearly felt like celebrating.

I mean, I don't need to dunk on the guy because by all accounts he was a good teammate and tried hard, and even helped some of the team be better on faceoffs, but he hasn't been an NHL player all season in terms of skillset.

This move would in theory make us better, except for the fact Leschyshyn was called up, which is amazingly still a net negative.

Bonino will do fine in the AHL somewhere and be one of those depth veterans you love to have on an AHL squad, assuming he wants to keep playing.

Already forgot we had waived him

He's 100% going to be a guy that gets brought up in a few years, and I struggle to remember what season he played here, how we acquired him, or if he was as bad as the HF lore reads.

Interesting, does he really want to call it quits on hockey?

He can sign with another team, no?

Any issue re-acquiring him in the future?
I mean sure, but he was on a league minimum deal and just went through waivers. Why would someone sign him now instead of picking him up on waivers?

The team claiming him would pick up the contract. Maybe some teams want to go the PTO route first.

surprised he wouldn't report to Hartford,
he's seen how injuries(suspensions/leave) have been affecting NYR roster,
and he'd play to stay in game shape and maybe get a new NHL home at TDL

It's possible that teams make moves in the next month (I believe he has to be signed by March 1st in order to qualify for the playoffs? Maybe?) that open a slot for him... A team could make a move knowing they could sign him right after so they have less contract slot headaches/hoops.

Maybe he should have gotten in better shape if he wanted to be an NHL'er. I don't feel bad for him, he didn't live up to his end of the bargain and has likely cost us some hockey games

He will help Hartford so there is a plus there. They could use it

This didn't age well

Why? 16 NHL seasons and didn't spend a day in the minors. Went straight to the NHL from college. Won 2 Cups. That would've been a huge hit to his pride.

2 time cup winner as well, so he'll be okay.

Wasn't really any more NHL ready this season than Riley Nash.

This guy wasn't nearly as bad as everyone's saying. He blocked a metric f*** ton of shots and was good on draws. Has a higher points/game than Goodrow...

What were you guys and management expecting from a league minimum 4C?

not exactly true, 69 AHL games at 22 and 23

and i don't buy that pride argument,
he's a grown man, who's been in the league as things have changed for marginal veterans
playing AHL is sometimes just part of the path, late career too, these days

anyway, I respect your opinion, just don't see it that way

Hope he enjoys retirement. Funny enough he was the exact kind of player we needed 10 years ago and today, but as his 10 years ago self. He just didn't have it anymore.

You know who block a lot of shots? Guys that have the "opportunity" to block a lot of shots.

Being in your own zone so often that you can lead in blocked shots is not the praise you think it is

wuuuuh?!? why? He's not good for us but could he not be an ok black ace? Did he do something to violate his contract like not report to Hartford?
If they're doing a mutual contract termination it's because Bonino wanted out of his contract. Not to retire, to be able to have the freedom to try to find employment elsewhere. Presumably he'll try to catch on with an NHL team, but if that doesn't materialize he'd still be able to choose to sign with any other professional team, domestic or overseas.

You realize he was on the PK, right? Which is where he blocked the majority of said shots. I would kind of expect him to have ample opportunity to block shots.

Again, what did you expect from a league minimum dude that's 35 years old? You wanted him to drive o-zone possession and score 20 goals? He came exactly as advertised; a defensive specialist and he did the job very well.

Guarantee you if NYR had a choice Goodrow would be in Hartford and Bonino would still be on the PK and centering the 4th line

Goodrow sucks but Bonino was so much worse.
