somewhere around nothing
Larionov turns 62 in december, i would say he's one the least likely candidates. Russia's U20 team under Larionov wasn't really a success and after the tournament he was "promoted" to head coach of Russia's national team B.

Quite a promotion.... If we are looking into Europe, forget Larionov & Fedorov. Get someone with actual coaching experience and success. Rikard Grönborg or Jukka Jalonen, or both.

Most intriguing North American candidates are Lane Lambert, Benoit Grouxl, Jim Montgomery and David Carle. Carle is most ideal to coach the Griffins, bit too green for NHL. Grouxl could be Blash 2.0, Lambert could be failed experiment like Todd Reirden. Is Yzerman even willing to hire his friend as a head coach? Can Montgomery handle the pressure?

I'm going to add to the debate and ask why Yzerman would give Blashill a 2 year extension just to fire him a year into for doing exactly what was expected?

Yzerman is a guy that sees things 5 steps ahead and I'm 100% sure Blashill is doing exactly what Yzerman knew he would do. So why would Yzerman give him a 2 year extension just to fire him?

Before people say Blashill isn't doing what was expected, remember I had to eat crow because I was literally the only one on this forum who had hopes Detroit would take a wildcard spot. Everyone laughed at me when I was vocal about it, and rightfully so.

All Blashill has done was what you expected. Except Seider and Raymond are likely Calder nominees. We had inconsistent goalie issues, Ned was overworked due to Greiss being so bad or injured. And I think after the 2nd half the season, Blashill was allowing the team to be more creative.

Unless the locker room is toxic, and if the players rally against playing for Blashill next season, then why would Yzerman fire Blashill. His job is to get us top 10 picks and help develop the kids. Zadina regressed, but Seider, Raymond, Ras, Vrana have been good. Bert and Larkin had career years. Pius Suter did as expected. Fabbri played as expected. Veleno was fine.

I know a coaching change would be fun. But realistically why would Yzerman give him 2 years only to fire him for doing what was expected? Yzerman isn't trying to ding the guys career. Firing him for having the season he had with what he had to work with would be troll move.

He might have been given a 2 year extension but the final year was a team option so it didn't count.

I think Yzerman should consider a successful coach he has experience with as a manager and player, and bring Babcock back. He even hired Babcock to successfully coach 2 Canadian teams to gold medals on Olympic stints.

I don't think promoting assistants like Lambert without head coaching experience worked for Detroit the last 2 times they attempted this (Dave Lewis and Jeff Blashill). Both were too soft for the job required necessary to have consistent playoff success.

Lambert is supposed to have learned from Trotz but that was the same label given to Blashill when he was hired to replace Babcock.

Detroit had the most success hiring proven hard nosed head coaches like Bowman and Babcock.

Patrick Roy. Excellent coaching record with the Quebec Ramparts, .577 in three seasons with a weak Colorado team. Lots of experience with young guys and development. Familiar with Tanguay.

Everything I've read about Roy is that he's analytical and methodical but has a temper when it's needed.

Hire Lidstrom as the other assistant. I wouldn't be surprised if hiring him as a special assistant to the GM or whatever was the first step in that.

I could see Roy/Lidstrom/Tanguay as an excellent coaching team.

I don't disagree with your assessment of Roy's coaching, and the Tanguay thing is interesting, but no chance this happens.

Part of the problem in Colorado, while he was there, is how much control he wanted ( and was given) which created some friction in terms of vision. There is no way SFY would give that to him.

Also, while I would find it entertaining and interesting, there is just no way Hockeytown is going to accept Roy as the coach. There are better odds that the Habs hire someone who doesn't speak french than the WIngs hiring Roy.

But like I said I would lo.ve to see him coaching in the NHL again, and I think he could knock it out of the park, given the right situation.

The real question is what coach would take this job knowing you are going to be bottom five at best.

I still like Torts, I know he's retired from/taking a break from coaching right now, but I think he'd be the right coach for the team in terms of style and accountability.

Him screaming at players and refs for f***ing up would be a nice change of pace versus Blashill just staring in silence for 60 mins.

Hard pass.

Unless you want to see him crush the offense out of Vrana and Raymond for not "playing the right way?"

No retreads! Don't penalize nonNHL experienced coaches due to Blashills failures.

I wouldn't want this guy anywhere near a talented outgoing young player like Seider. Torts is out of touch with the today's game and players.

Can you imagine someone on the Wings scoring a goal like the Milano-Zegras one and Torts giving them a talking to after the game about it??

So you did the Michigan.

Nowhere near close enough talent wise to attract a playoff coach. So I go with another unknown or college guy till in 3-4 years team is ready for a top tier coach and compete eventually not right away for cups.
