I think it will be much closer to 10M than 8M. My guess is it’s somewhere between 9.2 and 9.5 over 7 years

It really depends on how hot he stays, but to use the 100k per point baseline Marner is looking at an $8m deal as an absolute floor if he goes PPG this year. If he puts up 100 points then I think he's very justified in asking for $10m. Those numbers are assuming 8 year deals. He's not going to get $10m if he only gets 80 points. His major disadvantage is that his comparables are often centres who generally command a premium, though his play driving abilities will help with that. Kucherov's extension bought more UFA years coming out of a 100 point season and Eichel playing C are probably the two biggest factors that will help keep the money from getting too big.

After an 85 point season, I think Marner gets $8.5m x 8. A 100 point season gets him $9.5m x 8. Matthews gets $11.5m x 8.

This. Unless Marner's numbers fall off a cliff in the second half, you're looking at a $10M AAV pretty much guaranteed. The Matthews camp's ask is definitely higher than McDavid, probably in the range of $13-13.5M, eventually settling at $12-12.5 AAV...

Leafs fans, there is a very valid reason Kyle Dumass couldn't give Willy $8M AAV... Hes not going to have space and he knows it - regardless if the cap goes up slightly...

Also have to find money to pay or replace Kapanen (RFA), Lindholm(UFA), Johnsson(RFA), Leivo(RFA), Gardiner(UFA) & Ozhiganov(RFA)... There's another $10-15M right there - Gardiner commands at least $5M, Kapanen in the $3-3.5M range minimum.

Things are gonna get real tight, a la Chicago when that were on their run...
