Ottawa picks Daigle and Pronger goes second.

And Daigle said, no one remembers who went second .....

But for those who I thought were head scratchers ....

NYI taking a risk and bypassing several higher rated D men for Reinhart, that hurt.
Boston compiling 3 straight picks (13/14/15), having Barzal fall into their laps, then skip on him 3 times in a row. Barzal was ranked 8th (ISS), how could they skip him.

Sharks 2003 draft is pretty crazy to look at.
Milan Michalek 6th (Ryan Suter 7th)
Steve Bernier 16th (Zach Parise 17th)
Josh Hennessey 43rd (Patrice Bergeron 45th)
Matt Carle 47th (Shea Weber 49th)

Other than Suter/Michalek, it was pretty close to matching up on positional picks as well. That would be a franchise changing draft if it had happened.

I know it's way too soon to tell but also Meier over Rantanen. :D

I think Meier will surprise you, and I’m a bit skeptical of the numbers of a guy who plays exclusively next to
Mackinnon. And if there were anyone I’d regret drafting Meier over, it’s Barzal.

Either way, not really nice to gloat.

In 2015, the Islanders drafted Ryan Pilon. Pilon retired before the next season even started, citing a loss of passion for the sport.

The next pick? Troy Terry. The next pick after that? Adam Gaudette.

The number and talent of players Arizona passed on to take Strome is ridiculous.
That top 10 in '15 could be crazy and Strome would stand out like a sore thumb.
In the very next post you talked about hindsight. What gives? Strome was the consensus pick at #3. Arguable he could have gone 3, 4 or 5 in that draft. In hindsight closer to 15th.

Not sure if it was here or in another discussion but I also said that it's up to the GM/scouting staff to know better and not make such mistakes. Anyone can use a draft ranking and select players.
And Strome had questions about him going into the draft. So it's not exactly hind sight with him.

There are question marks about almost every draft prospect. You make it sound like the draft rankings are made up by fans. The professional scout services ALL had Strome ranked as a top 5 pick.

Our first round picks have always been pretty solid, the only one that comes to mind regarding us is 2006.

20 - Montreal - David Fischer
21 - Rangers - Bobby Sanguinetti
22 - Philly - Claude Giroux

In 2007 the Kings took Thomas Hickey when they easily could have just traded back for a few picks and selected PK Subban and Jamie Benn

Picking 11th at 2015 draft Panthers wanted Mikko Rantanan, even trying to trade up a couple spots to get him. When he was still available with one pick to go, majority of mocks had the Avs takin Lawson Crouse, fans thought for sure they were getting Mikko.

Oh well.

Turned Crouse into low key one of the best trades this franchise has ever made.

Sakic said after that draft that he tried to trade up to 8 to make sure he got Raantanen. Columbus passed on making a deal because they were dead set on taking Werenski and didn't think he'd make it back to them at 10.

Carolina Hurricanes:

Zach Boychuk picked 14th overall , just one player before Erik Karlsson. D'oh.

Nothing really for Winnipeg Jets 2.0.

Jets traded up to get Stanley when Chychrun and Fabbro were still available. Missing out on Chychrun kinda hurt but who knows, only time will tell.

Flames have been pretty good about this lately, but I think the most painful one is the 2nd round of 2011 when they took Tyler Wothersoon one spot before Nikita Kucherov (and Kucherov was a guy they were watching pretty closely for that draft).

Sather picked Bobby Sangunetti right before Claude Giroux.

Funny thing was Bobby Clarke wanted Bobby and didn’t seem to know who he was picking...

"Dammit they took the Bobby now we're stuck with some red-head, what's his name again?" :help:
Montreal messed up more with this if it makes you feel better. That was their #1 center and French. Oops!

non draft related, but Quebec once offered the Canucks a trade.

Offer was Joe Sakic for Trevor Linden.

Not my team, but one of the biggest miss have to be when Boston had 3 picks in a row and the best available by far was Barzal, and they did not pick him or traded any of their picks. It is easy to be smart on hindsight or if you only have 1 pick and miss out. But they had 3 picks, and still didnt choose to pick the player that by most was consider at that time to be the best player available, and that would maybe have been fine if they would traded 1-2 of their picks, but they did not do that either. They could have traded with islanders and still have got their player.
