While he can still be a useful player for us, I know many of us Devils fans were a little worried about taking Pavel Zacha at #6 in 2015. Spent a lot of time debating whether to take Hanifin/Provorov if they were available, but I think the team might have pigeonholed itself into taking a forward. But it's easy to forget what our NHL forwards looked like in 2015: New Jersey Devils 2014-15 roster and scoring statistics at hockeydb.com

Definitely some 'hindsight is 20/20' for some other picks:

1997: J.F. Damphousse (24th overall), Brenden Morrow (25th 0verall) - Easy to take for granted that Martin Brodeur would play as long as he did, but they wanted an insurance policy if Brodeur bolted via free agency. The Devils were only a couple years removed from a Brodeur holdout.

2002: Anton Kadeykin (51st overall), Duncan Keith (52nd overall), Barry Tallackson (53rd overall) - Unfortunately the Devils the two picks sandwiched around Keith.

2005: Nicklas Bergfors (23rd overall), T.J. Oshie (24th overall) - In fairness, at the time Bergfors was ranked higher and Oshie was an astute off the board selection by Jarmo Kekalainen when he was working for St. Louis.

2008: Mattias Tedenby (24th overall), John Carlson (27th overall) - Carlson seemed like the RH puckmoving D that we lacked in the system. And as a bonus he was a New Jersey kid who was a Devils fan. But the team opted for Tedenby who was ranked higher than Carlson in pretty much every ranking I can remember. But he slid on draft day, presumably because teams had questions about his hockey sense.

In 2007, the Capitals took a 6'0 210 lb, right-handed, offensive defenseman out of the OHL with the 34th pick. This guy was known for his booming shot, and his ability to QB the power play at a high level, while also possessing a distinct feistiness and compete level. They selected Josh Godfrey.

Turns out the Canadiens had a similar idea with their next pick; they went with P.K. Subban.

Apparently, the Canucks were eyeing Peter Forsberg with the 7th pick of the 1991 NHL Draft if Alek Stojanov had been taken off the board.

12 to 14 teams had contacted the Philadelphia Flyers about moving up to 6th overall to take Alek Stojanov, considered to be the best player available on TSN's draft rankings at the time. Forsberg was a bit of a reach at 6th.

The Flyers decided to keep the pick and made the off-the-board selection of Forsberg. The Canucks took Stojanov.

Forsberg made his NHL debut in 1994-95, the season after the Canucks reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Canucks, desperately looking for a top-line center, pursued numerous options, eventually settling on Mark Messier in 1997.

I wonder how many stories there are about teams getting defaulted into a superior pick. As mentioned, the Flyers wanted Trevor Lewis and Bobby Sanguinetti but both were taken, so they settled for Claude Giroux.

There's a funny in hindsight video of Columbus' draft room in 2005 (that year the draft was in a smaller ballroom, so the scouts were all back in their hotels). Columbus had the #6 pick and the room erupted when Minnesota took Benoit Pouliot at #4. As they were celebrating, one of the scouts blurts out that they're guaranteed one of Gilbert Brule or Anze Kopitar.

If Montreal had taken Brule like many (including myself) at #5, Columbus would have taken Kopitar at #6.

Not my team but Ron Francis would still have the Canes job if it was not from these poor selections on Draft Day:

2013: Lindholm #5 (Monahan #6)
2014: Fleury #7 (Nylander #8, Ehlers #9)
2015: Hanifin #5 (Provorov #7, Werenski #8)
2016: Bean #13 (McAvoy #14)

^ was more about the strikeout on Darling instead of grabbing Raanta last offseason

But yeah, Canes are a great team to chose here, some holy shit level ones:

2008: #14OA Zach Boychuk (#15 Erik Karlsson)
1998: #11OA Jeff Heerema (#12 Alex Tanguay)
1997: #22OA Nikos Tselios (#23 Scott Hannan)

and from JUST the 1991 draft:
#9OA Patrick Poulin (#10 Martin LaPointe)
31 Martin Hamrlik (32 Jamie Pushor)
53 Todd Hall (54 Chris Osgood)
75 Jim Storm (76 Mike Knuble)

but wait... there's more (1989):
52 Blair Atcheneyum (53 Nic Lidstrom)
73 Jim McKenzie (74 Sergei Fedorov)
115 Dallas Bechard (116 Dallas Drake)
220 John Batice (221 Vladimir Konstantinov)

Sebastian Aho wouldn't have filled a positional need, but if the Leafs had picked him instead of Dermott, that would have been special.
