Sarcasm? If not Hanifin is going nowhere. Barrie makes a ton of sense, he is playing well this year, and is good on the PP as well (unsure if he plays on PK) but if he does even better, since we are killing Hainsey and Zaitsev with all those duties. We cant go to much farther in the season playing them that way, they will burn out, and come playoffs then what? One or both is injured, or completely gassed. More likely that happens to Zaitsev, as Hainsey is a grizzled vet. But Barrie makes a ton of sense, not just for us but Colorado is obviously doing a minor rebuild, and we have a lot of attractive pieces to a team in that situation.

Leivo would have become a UFA after this season if he hasn't played certain # of games this season, so it's a smart signing by the Leafs securing Josh Leivo for another season. It doesn't matter how many games he plays this season. My question would be why just 1 season

Look like Leafs are not really high on him at this stage

Seems like some sort of promise was made to him for a roster spot next season (or at the very least promise for more opportunity this s a son, otherwise zero incentive for him to sign)

Smart move, at under a million he has the potential to be one of the better "bang for your buck" contracts on the team.

Also likely shows management views the guy Ina bit higher esteem than some around here.

Edit: clairified a point

horrible way to run a team, promising a guy ice time? that guy is at least 3rd on a list of wingers who deserve spots and we only have 2 leaving via UFA. Kapanen deserves a spot way ahead of sosh and Leivo just unluvky for him he can clear without waivers

The @MapleLeafs announced today that the hockey club has agreed to terms with forward Josh Leivo on a one-year extension worth $925,000. #TMLtalk

Nothing significant - why 1 year, long like he is not the part of this team for very long

I guess samI reason as Naz one year deal. If Leivo stays then he has one year to show what he is worth and then let his play dictate the contract

How does Barrie not solve our problems. He is 26 (so great age), right shot, PP specialist, and I do believe he kills penalties. If so then even better so we dont burn out Hainsey and Zaitsev, since Babcock does not trust anyone else. That alone right there (the trust issue) shows how hard we are probably looking for that defenseman. I dont know that we hear of a trade today, but if Lou was really close in the offseason, it may not take much to get Sakic to pull the trigger. I have a feeling we were close in the summer, but Sackic wanted to move Duchene first (see what that deal got him), and evaluate his team a couple months in, to see where they need help. A deal with Colorado makes a lot of sense for both. We need a RHD, the are in a minor rebuild, and could use a scoring winger (Leivo, JVR etc), plus a nice blue chip prospect and another pick, thats what you do in a rebuild. We did that, and look now. We had 12 picks I think last year (or 11), point is stockpile picks, and good prospects. Again we did that and now we are so deep it's insane, we only lack in the RHD department and center (after the NHL level, as the only close Marlies are Goat and Miro, who are really 4th liners right now).

It's Leafs fan - you know

“Let’s put Dermott in a package for a mid aged Dman on an expiring contract”

Smart...

Seriously though, we’ve got like 3-4 forwards and a couple lesser defensive prospects to trade before we even think about trading a guy like Dermott. He looks like a Rielly out there but a bit more aggressive and a little less offensive.

barrie wouldn't be bad as a maple leaf. he could probably be used on the penalty kill to ease hainsey's minutes. question is who would play on the bottom pair?

I think more of numbers game, with the abundance of prospects we have, Leafs management would be more inclined to trade him

Does this make it easier from him to get through waivers or more attractive to be claimed if he's sent down to the Marlies?

I don't think he's slow...he isn't a burner though either. Pretty average skater.
You might be looking at him with those homer eyes. He's too slow to play in our defensive system. He can't cut off the top, defend on the half wall, get in the lane if the pass does get to his Dman, get to his side of the ice on a ring around and he can't get in on the forecheck fast enough to be effective in our system.

If you're Leivo you see 2 guys from the AHL come up and get time ahead of you even though you've been on the roster since opening day. You must realize you are merely a place holder, enjoy it, it's a good life.

less attractive actually. his salary is 925k regardless of what league he's in

Whatever, he would get steamrolled in this market. We are talking about 3 years of control (not cost controlled either) versus 8 years for a guy like Dermott. Are we playing him on the third pairing?

So 202o is expiring to you ? Thats hilarious. You have to give to get, and we have LHD out the butt. Barrie is 5.5AAV signed through to 2020 season, which is also good because by then we have our big 3 locked in and we I believe would have Jake, Hainsey and Mcbackup coming off that same year so really only one guy to sign with Jake (if we still have him then).

Travis Dermott is the defenseman we need. Why would we trade him?

He'll be ready as late as next season.

Yes and no.

If they feel comfortable that he can be at least a reliable depth guy without being a liability there's likely not much harm in it. Likely any "promise" likely not etched in stone but the only way I see him taking this type of deal is being told he'll have a very decent chance at a roster spot (either for the rest of this season or the start of the next).

And like I mentioned in an earlier post I'd also suspect management is a bit wary of having an influx of rookie skaters next season while they're trying to be as competitive as possible. Having Leivo there at least to start the season is a bit of a safety net.

You think he’s worth 5.5? To play on the third pairing? Your trade proposal is horrid. Have you ever seen Dermott play? And on that point, Barrie? haha
