Oh man Barrie would be amazing, and basically punch Sakic's ticket to be fired. I think this is a smart signing even if there is not trade, but it makes sense to do this right before a trade so that the team acquiring him doesnt have to worry about control. To get Barrie though I would assume if Leivo was part of the deal, it would be probably Leivo, JVR and something maybe Dermott? Then I think we would have to throw in our 2nd round or our extra 2nd rounder.

Strange decision from Leivo. This literally takes away his main leverage to get into the lineup. Either he would have gotten 34 more games this season, or he would have hit UFA with a better profile than Group 6 UFA Jordan Weal who got 2x1.75 last year. Instead he takes away that leverage to settle for 1x925k.

He must really buy into this team and his role here. I'm happy

It's guaranteed money. When you've only played 46 games in 7 years, you take whatever you can and run.

I mean its $225K more than minimum are you suggesting not one single team would sign him as a FA even for minimum salary? if he wants more contracts after this one he will need to play in the NHL

Must be Christmas. First Polak and now Leivo get rewarded for being good foot soldiers (my guess).

Not really sure what you mean here. They thought Polak could give them some bottom pairing and PK minutes, but it just turned out he can't.

Leivo signing is just... a regular signing. Why wouldn't you sign him?

2 small offensive Dmen for the leafs? the exact opposite of what we need. Contrary to popular belief we don't need any old dman we need a dman that can PK and is solid defensively Vatanan and Barrie are not this

They are just suggesting Those two D but it could be someone else and I wouldn't doubt that it would be another D Lou would be looking at and would surprise everyone with a deal.
David Pagnotta has some good sources on the west coast and has broken a few trades involving LA. but it remains to be seen just who may be involved.
His article on Thursday he mentioned a few D but these rumour sites may have heard Levio is being shopped and the rest is probably speculation.

I think VGK may be a good place to shop Levio for a D.

But he could get hurt or take a down-turn. A guy in his position can't take the chance, or he might be playing in Switzerland in a year.

Well, now we can start the Losh Leivo 2019 Group 6 UFA clock. He needs 34 more games in the next 2 years or he's UFA in 2019. Who thinks he's going to get them? :sarcasm:

That is what I am suggesting. He is in the best possible situation. Any other team and he sees the reality of his situation, career AHLer on a 2 way contract.

Ya hence I think it is for the purpose of a trade. I recall the performances in camp and even regular season, I dont see a place for Leivo. Next year I think it will be a battle between Sosh, Grundy and Johnsson. At some point you have to cash in on your poker chips, whether today or next month or so I think he is traded. This signing just makes him more attractive, so that the team he lands on has full control.

Jordan Weal signed a 2 yr $1.75M per deal in the same status as Leivo he had 37 games 12 points under his belt

the he and his agent aren't very smart. Kapanen, shosh, Grundstrom (played very well at camp) are all ahead IMO and that's 3 LW (kapanen can play LW). So no I don't think he will be a regular next year as of right now he would have to impress in camp like he was supposed to this year
grundstrom still has to play on north american ice. imo he will play in the minors next season. sosh will make it for sure based on his waiver ineligibility being finished after 2 games. leivo will be on the team regardless and imo he will play ahead of those guys because he's the "vet"

Agreed but they are being very generous. Better question is why would Leivo sign here ? Is he not willing to bet on himself that he could get the same or better deal elsewhere (as a UFA) where he could play or did they promise him one of the UFAs spots next year or to move him?

I guess so. But Jordan Weal had played 37 games in 7 years, registered only 12 points. And got 2 years and 1.75 AAV as a group 6 UFA last offseason. And Leivo's got great possession stats. Given the precedent for the situation, taking the 925k seems a little conservative.

yup , might sound like much for a pro athlete but in his position 900k is a great deal of money and he'll still be able to get a bigger deal after it expires

grundstrom may shock you, he already plays NA style game over there. Kapanen is way ahead of leivo also no "vet" about leivo at all

Further Colorado would be perfect for him, they are rebuilding, and he easily plays on the 3rd line I think. I would love Barrie in Toronto, perfect age at 26 yrs old, R shot, big body, and PP specialist. I wouldnt even mind throwing in say Gardiner, only problem then is we would have to call up Rosen/Dermott. I wonder what gets it done.

Leivo
Dermott
2nd round pick?

Or would we have to throw in JVR? I would assume Colorado would want a defensman back, and since they are rebuilding I think they would find a Dermott or Rosen as a good fit. Maybe Leivo, Carrick, 2nd, 2nd? Picks that high (though not first round) are still highly regarded. I dont know what Barrie and the value would be, because he is oft injured. Last year big injuries lead him to play only 16 games.

Of note apparently Barrie didnt play vs Caps because of "upper body injury." Maybe he was excited to hear he may be a Leaf and in that excitement tweaked his shoulder raising his arms in happiness LOL
