Smart move. Remove any doubt and up his value to the team or in a potential trade.

well that came out of the blue. Someone must be getting traded because why would he sign for more pressbox time? he must know the leafs are making ice time for him or he is going somewhere with ice time

had a feeling the Leafs would figure a way to keep him in the fold, great news - low risk/high reward play if he pans out as a viable JVR replacement

It could be that Levio is the one being traded or maybe as an add on for a bigger trade

Can't argue with this as options never hurt. Kudos to both management and Leivo here.

Well he could also be taking Komarovs spot but it definitely means at least one of Komarov/JVR isn’t getting signed. Those are the two upcoming winger UFAs and Komarov is a PKer while JVR is the offensive player

very likely neither come back. Grundstrom/leivo/kapanen can all play LW on Kadri's line with Kapanen probably best suited in terms of PK role Komarov will vacate. Grundstrom may or may not be ready but babcock seemed to really like him

Leafs listening on Leivo
TheFourthPeriod.com
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to strengthen their defensive corps and have been looking for a top-pair defenseman since the off-season.
Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello and his staff have been exploring the marketplace and have plenty of talent to part with if the right deal presented itself.
Among the players the Leafs are willing to move is forward Josh Leivo, whom the team is high on, but with limited space on the roster, his ice time has been nearly non-existent, having played in just five games so far this season.
Leivo, 24, could be packaged in a trade with other assets for help on the blueline, as the Leafs are looking for both a rugged blueliner and a puck-mover.
In the off-season, the Leafs were reportedly close to acquiring Tyson Barrie from the Colorado Avalanche, but the deal supposedly fell apart. It's unclear if the two teams have re-opened discussions.
The Leafs aren't the only team to have expressed interest in Barrie, as the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks have reportedly inquired in the past.
Toronto has also been linked to Anaheim Ducks blueliner Sami Vatanen and while the price tag would be much higher than Leivo, he could be added to a deal if the Ducks decide to move their defenseman for help up front, which they are actively searching for.

Sign and trade for a damn we are too stacked up front. That's what my crystal ball says at least.

No... Leivo isn't going to bring back any Dman, that is going to help. We've got enough 5/6 guys for several teams already.....

It's JvR, who will be going, whether that is by trade, or just not resigning... this just means we don't lose Leivo to UFA, if he doesn't play enough...

Now we just have to find a way to get Sosh games.
