Jordan Weal signed a 2 yr $1.75M per deal in the same status as Leivo he had 37 games 12 points under his belt
Jordan Weal is an undersized center who can skate. You can get away with being undersized in today's NHL, but you cannot get away with being slow.

It's not a bad gig what Leivo has going. He gets played handsomely to hang around super stars.

The puzzling thing about this signing is the timing, why now and the only thing I can come up with this may be a sign and trade

Those don't really happen anymore. Like the recent Sens/Avalanche deal - the extension is usually negotiated with the new team.

Quick question. So this signing keeps him from becoming a UFA this offseason, but does it mean he'll be a UFA going forward after that?

Further Colorado would be perfect for him, they are rebuilding, and he easily plays on the 3rd line I think. I would love Barrie in Toronto, perfect age at 26 yrs old, R shot, big body, and PP specialist. I wouldnt even mind throwing in say Gardiner, only problem then is we would have to call up Rosen/Dermott. I wonder what gets it done.

Leivo
Dermott
2nd round pick?

Or would we have to throw in JVR? I would assume Colorado would want a defensman back, and since they are rebuilding I think they would find a Dermott or Rosen as a good fit. Maybe Leivo, Carrick, 2nd, 2nd? Picks that high (though not first round) are still highly regarded. I dont know what Barrie and the value would be, because he is oft injured. Last year big injuries lead him to play only 16 games.

Of note apparently Barrie didnt play vs Caps because of "upper body injury." Maybe he was excited to hear he may be a Leaf and in that excitement tweaked his shoulder raising his arms in happiness LOL

Just.... stop.

Leivo + Dermott + JVR + 2nd?

And that's for Tyson Barrie?

He'll be 26(you need to be 27 to be UFA) when this expires with not enough NHL time(7 years) to be UFA, so he'll still be RFA. Assuming of course he gets those 34 games in the next 2 years. He could be in this same situation next year where he needs to play games to remain RFA.

Perhaps because we've gotten to the point in the season where they can safely predict that he won't play enough games to retain RFA status.

Thank you for the rudeness for no reason. It is a simple question, and that would be my starting point. Look at what Sakic got for Duchene, prospects picks, and a backup goalie. Now if he hits on the picks and the prospects play well then may look as a decent deal. The divide is 50/50 on whether he got hosed or whether he did well. Too early to say because of the high picks he got. I dont think you realise how highly regarded picks are these days, especially Colorado is rebuilding. If Barrie was an iron man, always healthy it would cost way more but he has had his injuries. Anyway, no need to be rude I was simply wondering what it would take, and my little offer, was a starting point. I love how everyone is an expert on trades, because for Duchene, no one was even near the deal that happened. As to say that many posters were thinking it would take way more than that...I know I thought it would. You dont think Colorado would love a JVR? 25-30 goals, maybe even Bozak since they just lost Duchene, AND in a move yesterday they send Tyson Jost down. Which is strange, though Colorado is saying it was because he is not injured and healthy, so I assume conditioning.

Anyway I do not appreciate the rudeness. This forum is supposed to be fun.

Starting point, I said what would it take. What do you think it would. Because if we do get him I want to save what you say to see how far off you are. I know my deal was not close, but again was a starting block. I guess you under value our guys as well.

Better question is why would Leivo sign here ? Is he not willing to bet on himself that he could get the same or better deal elsewhere (as a UFA) where he could play or did they promise him one of the UFAs spots next year or to move him?

Because he could struggle to play well enough or get hit by a bus. He'd be a fool not to sign it. Guy has never earned a regular NHL paycheck and may never.

Edit: well I guess he did earn NHL money all last year, but whatever.

Seems like some sort of promise was made to him for a roster spot next season (or at the very least promise for more opportunity this s a son, otherwise zero incentive for him to sign)

Smart move, at under a million he has the potential to be one of the better "bang for your buck" contracts on the team.

Also likely shows management views the guy Ina bit higher esteem than some around here.

Edit: clairified a point

We can all have fun without being delusional. That's a gross overpayment for a piece who doesn't solve our problems. And you're right, those picks are very valuable, so why would we give two of them?

I don't get it why he is signing it. I'd opt out for free agency.

Because as a FA there is no guarantee anybody would give him even that, not saying Leivo's no good, but teams that may be interested in signing him next year won't be involving themselves in any kind of bidding wars for his services, it would be more like yeah sure kid sign this PTO and if you make it we'll give you 600k

So regardless of how many game Leivo plays his UFA status not going to hurt leafs at least till next season.

Good asset management for a bit by Lou; now what about pending UFAs Lou?

grundstrom still has to play on north american ice. imo he will play in the minors next season. sosh will make it for sure based on his waiver ineligibility being finished after 2 games. leivo will be on the team regardless and imo he will play ahead of those guys because he's the "vet"

Yep, management I suspect sees him being more NHL ready than the main Marlies likely to graduate next season.

They won't want to regress next season so there's value in having a NHL ready depth scorer who can immediately contribute rather than go through developmental growing pains with a younger guy

he must be under the impression he will be an every day player next season, which he might, and he probably wouldn't get much on the open market.

Re-signing him preserves his RFA status for next year a team trading for him would only have him for the rest of the seson and then he could become UFA , in all honesty though we could be doing it for the same reason but I think a trade may be in the works.

Ya I think if they signed him just to trade him he'd already be gone. Who really knows though with Lou.

I don't think he's slow...he isn't a burner though either. Pretty average skater.
