Pre-WJC update. Not a good year for this team on any side of the equation. The lone bright spots seem to be McLovin, who's having a solid first year at UNH, and Tolchinsky, who is just a dirty man that can do absolutely filthy things with the puck at will. Rask also is having a relatively decent season with the Canes despite the teams overall suckitude right now.

Team Canada has yet to be announced, though it sounds likely that Fleury will be included.

It's been weird reading what other people are projecting for the roster. Some think Fleury is a lock in Canada's top four and others have him as a longshot behind Heatherington, Bigras, Hicketts (most likely due to age, but I would have both 2014's in Sanheim/Fleury penciled in the top-6). Fleury's had a ****** year production wise but every time he's played for Canada he's been great so I really don't know what they're gonna do. Hopefully he makes it but if he doesn't I have absolutely no reason to care at all about that team and I can freely root for Wallmark and USA.

My defense for Canada would be:

Nurse-Theodore
Morrissey-Bowey
Fleury-Sanheim

Heatherington or Morin as #7.

Yeah that's my thought as well. Will be interesting to see what they do since he's one of the few dmen they have as an option this year that have his type of skating with any kind of defensive responsibility to their game.

If I was Ron Francis, looking at that prospect list and their performances so far this season, I'd fire my entire scouting and development staff and start over. It's pathetic. And I'm tired of trying to see silver linings. What we're doing isn't working. Period.

Can't disagree much with that, it's the one area I thought he had room to make significant changes this offseason that he didn't do. Hopefully bringing in Nieuwendyk and Samsonov this past offseason is a starting point of cleaning house in our scouting ranks.

Haydn Fleury has survived the first round of cuts. The dmen cut today were Sanheim and Bigras.

He had at least a goal and an assist today from what I saw.

So, Team CAN has 8 D for 7 spots. Top 4 appear: Morrissey-Bowey/Nurse-Theodore. One of Hicketts, Fleury, Morin, Heatherington don't make it.

Interesting that it appears Fleury has gone from potential cut to the top pairing with Morrisey in nearly every HF posters WJC Canada lineup.

Excited to see what this kid can do on the international stage.

Probably because they were just stat-watching and his are far from impressive.

After they saw him play in exhibition games it likely changed their minds. Someone 6'3" 210lbs that skates effortlessly, can lead a rush, play on a PP unit, all while being able to shut guys down defensively is pretty helpful.

Nice writeups but if I can nitpick a little, we signed Tolchinsky last summer after he went undrafted then attended our prospect camp. Your article says we signed him after his big year last season.

Morin and Heatherington made Canada's WJC team over Fleury.

Weird. I watched the entire game tonight. Fleury was better than Heatherington and Morin but I guess they just want more experienced players since they're all similar (at least at the moment, Fleury still raw). Canada's forwards and top-3 D are good, but everything beyond that...not so much.

Hope to see some improved production from Fleury when he goes back to Red Deer. He can fly. He showed some of that tonight and made good decisions on breakouts/pinches. Anyone that likes to keep up with zone entries will love him. If he perfects his timing and recognition he's gonna be quite good.

Ryan Murphy leads all Checkers in scoring...and he's only played 20 games.

Either that team sucks, or Murphy isn't a bust yet :)sarcasm:), or both.

Also noteworthy that all his points are assists.

Chad LaRose's tied for second in scoring so an NHL contract and a call up is imminent.

The fact that char is tied for second proves the team is garbage I guess.

Regardless, I don't need Murphy to score goals if he's helping others do so.
