^^^^ I'd seen a lot of Summit Series photographs, but never that one of Savard giving a cowboy hat!

Here Kasatonov arm wrestles his blueline partner and bicep-popper Fetisov.

They are arguably the greatest blueline tandem in hockey history.

^^^^ Look at that photo.

Gawd, even at that age, Gordie comes across as a guy you do NOT want to fight in an alley. (I think he could have bested Bobby if they'd tousled.)

I can't believe I just came across this. I've often tried to find Howe pics I hadn't seen before and this one quickly falls into my lap after ten seconds of surfin' the net!

I met Gordie in his seventies; and he still looked like someone you would not want to fight. Those gnarled hands of his still looked like they could be used to kill another man!!

1995/96 - Wayne Gretzky of the Kings appears to be thinking - "maybe if I skate fast enough nobody will notice me in this uniform!". The third jersey was introduced after the NHL All Star break in 1996 and was not used again following the end of that season.

I hadn't realized how short right winger Bill Mosienko was, the NHL record setter with the fastest hat trick ever (21 seconds) measures in at 5'8, here standing next to fellow HHOFer Roy Conacher, the 6'2 left winger who led the NHL in goals as a Boston rookie in 1939 and won the Art Ross in his eighth season as a Blackhawk.

Ya, many of them absolutely outstanding & that shot of Keith Magnuson in particular heartbreaking taken in the total context of his life & career with Chicago who came "oh so close", and just a great player that he was... you could palpably still see the child in him as you can in many other players at times, that their 14 forever and I mean that most respectfully... his then tragic & premature death years later, well, that photo just sort of captures it all. Really rather breathtaking. Poignant.

I just noticed one brilliant little detail in the photo... the untied sock just above his left (our right) skate.

He had sat down, untied that one string, then stopped to cradle his head in his hands.

1976-78 ca - the picture is harder to see due to the small size but another example of inter-league play between the WHA and NHL. The Birmingham Bulls are playing host to the Atlanta Flames in a pre-season game.

Edit: I found a larger picture of the one above

Here is Ryan Smyth anticipating one of my favorite Slovakians Vladimir Orszagh in international competition in 2004. Orszagh scored 100+ points over three seasons as a Nashville Predator third-line banger whose game I appreciated greatly. He had been a member of the legendary 2002 Slovakian gold-medal world championship team (going through Canada, Sweden and Russia in the medal rounds) that featured Bondra, Palffy, Stumpel, Handzus, Visnovsky and tourney MVP Miroslav Satan! Alas, Orszagh retired after a nagging knee injury.

Nice to see so many unique Gordie Howe photos -- I'll add one more.

This is Howe recovering in the hospital after suffering a fractured skull in March, 1950. That is some pile of fan mail!

1978 - A rare picture of Gordie Howe of the New England Whalers playing against the Detroit Red Wings in a WHA-NHL exhibition game.

.... ya, and just look at that evil smile on his face... you reckon he's massaging that players spleen with his pointy filed down razor sharp blade DB?.... Ha?...... cuz thats what I'm thinkin.

Yah, it does kind of look that way Killion. Dale McCourt of the Red Wings has an uneasy look on his face. I wonder if he was thinking about some of the stories he must have heard about Howe.

The Lonely Planet lists this City Park in Budapest, Hungary as one of the top-10 must-visit winter places in Europe. It's funny because Hungary has had so few ice skating facilities relative to other European countries and that has stunted the development of hockey as a sport relative to their neighbors in Slovakia.

Or that premier Robert Bourassa had a bromance with Remparts captain (and Memorial Cup champ) Guy Lafleur?
