I would say Canes fans really like and want Pesce to stay. As his agents duke it out with Canes management over his contract, they know management isn't afraid of jettisoning really good players rather than capitulate.

The disappointment would be big, so they want some nice toys coming back to take some of the sting out.

As they should. Aside from that, Canes fans have embraced the absurd and "jerks" mentality nicely here, and they are (sweeping generalization) HF's best. tarheelhockey is the best poster on this entire site! He gets the whole fanbase bonus points. :thumbu:

More rumblings out there from Carolinas side. Pesce deal might already be in place on principal, but it feels like it's only a deal Carolina makes if they get one of their other targets. Carolina fans think they can get Askarov back or another prospect and 1st for him. If either of those go out the door then I assume Trotz is locking him up on a new deal, but all that feels like optimism from Canes fans.

Oh HELL no. If it's part of a deal to eat EK's contract you friggin aye right you are going to pay the Preds.

EDIT: IF it's a deal to make move a player for cap space, Carolina is paying because Nashville has enough RHD. Honestly. Unless the Preds go with a 2 forward 3 defenseman line up, why?

MORE YAMMERING: Unless it's part of a deal which was rumored where Fabbro goes to SJ. CAR trades Pesce for Fabbro, CAR pays fo EK with Fabbro? Say...

Deal 1:

Fabbro for Pesce

Deal 2:

Fabrro+ to SJ for EK and retention?

Moving a 1st or Askarov really doesn't make any sense for us if the target is Pesce. I could see some really dire scenarios moving a 1st and the kids completely flopping this season (e.g. the pick becoming a Stuetzle, Byram like happened to San Jose and Ottawa trading 1sts).

Here is my thought; Fabbro is a key to an EK trade. The contract value difference is 1.5 million and 3 yrs of age. SJ wants their Boston boy and the Preds are wringing out the Canes for value. Also, WTF do the Preds need to make a move for a RHD? Pay us!

Near where sand and waves meet.
Pesce in requires at least one RHD going out. Barrie, Fabbro, Carrier, Schenn ... then Livingstone and Matier on 2-way deals, still waiver exempt ... Gross and McKeown waiver exposed .... then Prokop as a longshot to play at a level above the ECHL this season (at least for us).

Askarov or a 1st for a guy like Pesce is a pipe dream and if it is done then I go from backing Trotz to questioning if he needs to be GM.

There are numbers and then there is the eye test. I don't see it. Glass is no "shutdown center". He's a soft-ish pass-first offensive center. If he happened to get icetime in 1 season when nobody cared to matchup against him, and his stats say he got good defensive metrics, well, that's nice, but it's not the whole story on who he is as a player.
:dunno:
Idk, to me that's kind of like saying Legwand wasn't a good defensive center because he wasn't physical.

Crazy theory: There's more smoke on a Pesce trade than with the Canadian Forest Fires.

What if both Carrier and Fabbro are moved? 3 way trade: SJ gets Brent Burns, Dante Fabbro, Dylan Coghlan, NSH gets Pesce and a 1st Retains a part of Karlsson's contract, CAR gets Karlsson and Carrier?

I don't think both Fabbro and Carrier get moved out, I think it will be one or the other. Reason I say that is I think Trotz has every intention of moving Barrie at the trade deadline, playoff position or not.

Not that my opinion matters, but I truly don’t think Trotz is planning on moving Askarov. Just doesn’t seem to be a Trotz-type of move.

I dunno, I think everybody - including Barrie, including Trotz himself - would generally expect Barrie to be moved at the TDL. But... I mean if our PP is clicking and Barrie is a big part of that, and if we're sitting pretty in a playoff position... then... why move him? Whatever we get out of a playoff run is going to be worth more than a 2nd round pick. In that scenario, if a 2nd round pick is all the market offers, you still keep Barrie. If the market rises to a 1st round pick as a result of his strong play... well ok, then you could still move him.

Cause this season doesn't matter. Making it to the playoffs is a bonus if you can get there. We may have picked up some Vets but we are still rebuilding. That extra 2nd may be what you need to sweeten the deal when the time comes to make a real push.

Agree to disagree then. If the team is doing that well, there's no reason to continue with the cautionary "this year doesn't matter" theme. In that scenario, they got ahead of schedule and turned it into a year that matters, and that's a Good Thing.

Making the playoffs is not that well. Boston did exceptionally well in the regular season, how did that turn out?

Secondly, we are going to be heavily reliant on the kids having a really solid season just to get there.

Now if Trotz makes a couple more acquisitions before the season starts then that goes out the window because now it tells me he's changed the plan. That means this season does matter.

Of our collection of not-so-physical, small side RHD on a 1 year contract:

1) Barrie is the oldest and most versatile as he can QB a PP
2) Fabbro is the youngest and restricted and has been a yoyo in Hynes' lineup
3) Carrier just re-signed

Schenn pushes one of these guys out. Pesce would push a second guy out. And there is Livingstone, who may push as well.

Carrier is an UFA at the end of the season as well, which is why I think he and Barrie both get moved by the trade deadline.

It sounds like there might actually be enough smoke around this thing to indeed go ahead and sketch out the particulars!

I don't personally understand why the Canes would want to bring in both of DeAngelo and Karlsson, but ok, they seem to have that gameplan in their heads.

So what you've got is:

NAS gives Carrier + Fabbro + TBD retention on Karlsson ?4x$3M?
NAS gets Pesce + CAR 1st

CAR gives 1st + Burns + Coghlan
CAR gets Karlsson @ ?$8,5M? + Carrier

SJ gives Karlsson
SJ gets Burns + Fabbro + Coghlan

That's another long retention of dead Cap for us, I would definitely want to be paid handsomely for that. I kind of don't think we give up BOTH of Fabbro and Carrier, just 1 of them? Or that Carolina is looking to move Burns in any of this.

Maybe Carolina moves a prospect/younger player like Drury instead of Burns? Maybe we leave Carrier out of it? Maybe SJ also does some retention on Karlsson and gets another draft pick from CAR?

But at this point, one does get the sense the teams are kicking the tires on something like this.

I think it would be scary to both retain $$$ on Karlsson and then be faced with signing Pesce to a new contract that pays him what he seems to be asking for. That would end up being almost like having Pesce for $10M a season for 3 of those 4 years, which seems very extravagant to me. I like the player, but I don't honestly like this scenario. Even while agreeing it sounds like it might be something they are considering.

Poile has retired. Trotz is the new guy. Hynes gone. New head coach in place. Draft is over. Free agent frenzy gone quiet. Development camp complete. We have now entered the twilight zone where every imaginable trade and resulting lineup is created in our minds.
Will Preds trade Cole Smith to Edmonton for McDavid and a 2024 1st? Would Jagr come back over on a one year, two way $775k deal as a PP specialist?
All I can say is it’s great fun but hurry up Training Camp!

Two of the three retention slots are already used on the Ekholm and Joey trades ... Karlsson retention would be through 2027. The Preds already have $8.8 mil in dead cap this season, $11.8mil dead in 2024-25, $8.8mil dead in 25-26 ... before factoring in any Karlsson retention.

Only reason I can think of why Carolina might be interested in Karlsson is they think he'd bring a huge amount of offense to them, which is something they struggled to generate in the playoffs. If they can get him and have the Sharks retain 50%, maybe that doesn't look too bad?

PS: Duchene was taking some shots about his "going to a winner" comments and Karlsson has expressed the exact same sentiments.

Crazy theory on my part: we didnt trade duchene with retention because we were saving the spot for something like this. Instead we opted to buy duchene out.

Way i see it. Pesce > both (fabbro might take large steps forward and catch up at some point). So pesce replaces fabbro, barrie holds the spot til deadline replacing carrier and is replaced by livingstone, schenn is there to float up to 2nd pair if needed
