From Friedman. Interesting the comment about rumblings of Francis considering resigning. If true, it really indicates the two guys didn't see eye to eye.

Francis's removal a sign of Hurricanes owner Dundon's hands-on style - Sportsnet.ca

This has been brewing.

On the weekend, there were rumblings Francis was considering resigning. He did not respond to a few requests for comment, so uncertainty prevented any reporting of the story.

According to multiple sources, it became obvious the owner and the GM were a bad match. Francis is patient, preferring a slow, smart build for an organization that did not spend anywhere near the cap. Unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom, Dundon wanted to take more risks. It is believed that, at the trade deadline, those differing philosophies clashed over what moves were available. It was only a matter of time after that.

Dundon is tight with Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban, and this is going to give rise to theories that he will be as hands-on with the Hurricanes as Cuban is in the NBA. He has already indicated a desire to add to the team’s analytics staff (they already have one of the best in Eric Tulsky) and any potential candidate now understands the deal going in. He’s the boss. And, he won’t be quietly lurking in the background.

Anger over a team firing a GM a month from completing the 9th year of the playoff drought? After having members of the franchise tell everyone who would listen that this was a make or break year regarding the playoffs?

If people are that angry, I know a baseball bat with rusted nail spikes that those people are more than welcome to sit on.

Is there anyone in WPG's front office that would be good GM material. They seem to have taken a crappy Thrasher's team and turned it into one of the best in the NHL.
Ironically people for YEARS were criticizing Chevy for the very thing that ExGMRF was doing and dealing with. Shit goaltending, afraid to make moves, etc. Funny how patience can pay off.

From Luke's article in N&O:
Luke DeCock said:
In a telephone interview later Wednesday night, Dundon said he would let his statement speak for itself, but he did want to get a greater diversity of voices on the hockey side.
"We're just trying to break up the hockey stuff," Dundon said. "We're undermanned there. We could stand to continue to evolve, in a good way, to get more throughout."
As for the timing, Dundon said, "I'm not the kind of guy to wait around."

There might be anger around the league for exactly the reason that was mentioned immediately after that sentence.

Francis was in year 4 of a 5-year rebuild. Not letting him see that through is a little gauche, especially since he was up front about taking that long when he first took over.

That being said, if there was enough tension and animosity between the two that he was considering stepping down, the move had to be made.

I have a feeling Jordan Staal won't be a Cane next year.
I've wondered about this just from a personal perspective a lot recently. I've known some people to experience a personal tragedy, and not want to be around the memories of that. Throw in that he came here to be with his brother, and that was thrown away somewhat quickly. And he's been made to be the guy when he maybe didn't want it, and I've wondered more and more if he would be gone.

If there were actual animosity, he'd be gone.

And f*** "gauche". Vegas is Year 1 into their Year 1 plan. You want a 5 year plan, join your local communist party.

As you mention, the two of them not seeing eye to eye (and Francis almost stepping down supposedly) should negate a lot of that ill will (even though it won't). But also, Dundon, a completely different person than the one that hired him, doesn't owe him anything as far as letting him see the rebuild through (not saying you believe that he was owed anything, just in general).

Something to consider with the Shannon tweet.

He has this idea that Dundon sees himself as capable of being a GM all on his own. Now I really doubt that Shannon has any idea what’s going on between Dundon’s ears. He doesn’t have those relationships as far as I can see, so he’s pulling that story from some kind of leak. But there’s undoubtedly some core of truth to it, or it wouldn’t have come to him in the first place.

Now, what we’re actually getting from the horse’s mouth is a desire to get better at the personnel side of the house, in the context of a guy who self-admittedly doesn’t have much of a clue about the sport.

By way of trying to make all of that information make sense (and not come to a nonsense conclusion like Dundon negotiating trades) I think the answer lies in the other side of the GM’s job — sales and marketing, building relationships with the media, dealing with the arena authority, building the organizational staff. In other words, the side of the job that Dundon has already been visibly doing since he got here.

Karmanos has been pretty much the exact opposite type of owner, staying so far from the day-to-day operations that Rutherford pretty much ran the entire show by himself until Waddell arrived.

It’s easy to imagine that transitioning from PK to TD will mean a lot of modified job descriptions in the front office, first and foremost that of the GM. My guess is that the next guy is going to be responsible for very little other than managing hockey talent. Dundon is going to be taking over a lot of the other responsibilities — hence the content of the Shannon tweet.

If I’m right, then the next shoe to drop might not be Bill Peters... but Don Waddell.

Anyway, my guess as to what’s happening behind closed doors on Edwards Mill Rd.
