Friedman: Edmonton was close to a "big" trade on Wedneday involving a goalie.

great coaching would help anyone!..

but a proven veteran goalie isnt going to become worse due to poor coaching; at least, not at any significant level

Probably not immediately, you’re right. However Edmonton’s coaching staff in general is just mediocre in general — I get that it’s not the most desirable market but you’d think they could hire a competent coach. I’m sure there’s no shortage of guys wanting to coach McDrai.

Honestly happy the Canucks hired Tocchet when they did because he really would have done wonders in Edmonton.

Until Edmonton replaces their goalie coach it’s just shuffling deck chairs on the titanic. As a Canucks fan, Demko is good in his own right but Ian Clark is legit a goalie whisperer — the Oilers desperately need better support staff. The fact this dude has survived as long as he have is just evidence that failing upwards is a thing for some people
I hope everything stays the same formthe Oilers

I thought about Gibson or Hart...

The Binnington suggestion others have made is interesting too.

Edm started the McDavid era with Talbot, then Smith, then Campbell. Talbot made sense to start with as he covered for King Henrik nicely the prior season. Prospect was Broissant had put in an E and A season as a pro with good numbers. But, Edm never gave themselves more options. Put all of their eggs in 1 basket.

2016 - in round 2 could have taken Hart, but opted for smaller forward, and oft injured Benson.
2017 - took smaller forward Yamamoto over Oettinger
2020 - Took Bouglat over Wallstedt, but really, he'd arrive too late for the McDrai 2nd contracts to be the main man.

They took several goalies from round 3 onwards, but that philosphy and hope of finding a Shesk, Lundqvist, etc. is a luxury only when you have a legit starter for several years, like what Lundqvist gave the Rangers, what Vasi has been giving TB. Edm didn't have that kind of locked in starter for several years. They needed to give themselves more options in the event their goalie did not pan out.

Add to that bad goalie coaching and team defense. And they are where they are now. Markstrom as a UFA passed on playing with McDrai in favour of Calgary.

You don't need to go 45-25 to get 90 points. You're forgetting bonus points.
Dude it's very hard to turn it around and catch up. I know as a Canucks fan after brutal starts only to barely miss playoffs after coaching changes and going on a hot streak. If they have this huge bump early in the season, it won't mean they will not have any rough stretch in the middle of the season

It must be with a team that still have 3 goalies on the roster.

MTL
DET
PHI

It's be easier and more effective to add a better Dman first. Not that it is easy to find a Dman but no goalie will step into that lineup and not see their save percentage go down.
The issue with this, is that they likely won't be able to find cap space to do both.
Was Markstrom for a +1st + Campbell + Bouchard :sarcasm:
It's probably not an awful idea to package Bouchard and a 1st with Campbell. It's finding a team with an available goalie who is ok buying out Campbell later that is the issue.

Get Nashville on the phone and see what could be done with Bouchard. Campbell and futures for Saros and Barrie.

It must be with a team that still have 3 goalies on the roster.

MTL
DET
PHI
Of the 3, Philly might be out as they already have a massive goalie salary buried in Cal Petersen. Not sure if the available goalies from MTL or DET would make much difference.

On the most recent 32 thoughts Friedman brought it up.

He doesn't know if it was just delayed, fell through, or what, but he was told the Oilers were close to a big/significant move in goal.

As a hab fan thar clearly not Allen, so possibly Gibson from Anaheim ? With Dostal playing well that might be a possibility

Koskinen is 6’7” so that would be the big part of the deal. Oilers bring him back for round 2. he had 80+ wins and .900+ goals against in 4 seasons . You don’t miss him till he’s gone . Bring back the Koskness Monster .

The season is pretty much lost now. They need a minimum of 95 pts to make the playoffs. They have 5 right now with 70 games left. They have to go 45-25 the rest of the way or play 0.650 hockey just to maybe sneak into a wildcard spot. They already lost 3 games to a divisional opponent (Vancouver) and the schedule the rest of November is absolutely brutal for the Oilers. October was the time to bank some points. For reference the Jets took the last spot in the west last season with a record of 46-33-3 (95 pts).

This is the Oilers schedule the rest of the month of November. No way in hell they are winning 75% of those games.

How is that brutal? I see two power house teams in Carolina and Vegas. The rest are winnable games for the Oil. I say this as as die hard Jets fan.

I'm guessing Binnington as well. They need an experienced confident goalie that's gone through everything and I think he fits the bill.

Being a little dramatic here. There is no way that schedule is "absolutely brutal"

Just because they play VGK once doesn't make it brutal. Seattle twice, NYI is a mess right now, and ANA is still ANA albeit improved from last year.

You make it sound like they have 2x LAK 2x VGK NYR and VAN
