Not sure i like the idea of Mike Green as a top pair guy if his D really is that bad. Even with Vlasic, I don't like the idea of a pylon on the top pair facing tough competition.

I would go:

Vlasic-Braun 60% of important D-zone faceoffs/20% of O-Zone Faceoffs
Burns-Green 35% of D-zone Face-offs/50% O-Zone Faceoffs/#1 PP Time
Irwin-Demers 15% of D-zone face-offs/30% of O-zone Faceoffs/#2 PP Time-Switch Irwin with Vlasic maybe.

Green and Demers are pretty interchangeable depending on who is healthy and productive.

Then Vlasic and Braun are gassed by the playoffs.

There is a reason why Green's defense hasn't progressed and why expecting coaching to help is not a good gamble. A few years ago in a blurb, he was almost proud that he didn't watch game DVD's. He said that they didn't help him at all.

With the relatively short practices and high emphasis on meetings/DVDS for the Sharks game plans, Mike Green wouldn't seem to be a good choice for the SJ milieu. IMO, to optimally use Green, he would have to be joined at the hip to one of the coaches.

The same issue that goes into not studying opponents is likely why he has been so good offensively. It makes him less predictable and likely to try things that are not terribly wise. He is an excellent skater with a very good shot.

So couldn't we pair him with Vlasic and let him go ham?

He is bad enough defensively, that Vlasic might not be able to bail him out.

Essentially, he is paid his value if healthy. He is a very high end PP specialist. Like Boyle of this past year with better offense.

It was noteworthy this past year when Washington opted for Carlson over Green at points as #1 QB. Carlson is not as offensively gifted as Green although he is gifted. Carlson's defense is light years ahead of Green's.

In a sense, he is better off with Washington as the value of offensive minded dmen is best served with playing them with first line forwards. That doesn't work so well when guys rate out as PP specialists (not enough in their defensive game). PP specialists are a good part of a team when there is another offensive minded dman who can take on top comp defensively. The PP specialist then can concentrate on boosting secondary scoring. That also means that the team should have an offensively capable second and third line (Washington fails in this regard). Effectively, that is what the Sharks tried to do this year with Boyle/Demers where Boyle couldn't handle the defensive side. This is one of the reasons why Krug works so well for Boston as they have ALL of the other pieces.
