Want us to throw Matthews in there, maybe Willy and Mitch too? If only Jim Benning was our GM!

Lol. this is not even close. I wouldn't trade anyone of Kapanen, Liljegren and definitely not the 1st for Tanev, let alone all three.....
Gio and Hamilton are a no. Flames acquire Hamilton and Hamonic to strengthen the top 4. Trading one away makes no sense.
And if so...for what?
Montour
Manson
Vatanen
Hamilton
Giordano
Hanifan
Faulk
Pesce
Seabrook
Brodin
Dumba
Ellis
Ekholm
Bouwmeester
Parayko
Stralman
Tanev

Yeah, you missed the part where Ducks fans (management doesn't seem to either) do not want to trade Montour. I'm sure leaf fans will keep making proposals whether Ducks fans agree or not. Bring out the JVRs as usual.snip
Finally, the list needs to reflect a player the Leafs would be actually be interested in.
Montour
Braun
That's it, that is the list of defensemen that meets all of the criteria. If I missed anything, please feel free to amend. Any proposals should be for these two players only, as anything else doesn't work for one or both of the teams involved in the trade.
The list is very good, but assuming you don't want to give up any of the big 3, the list gets shorter:
Montour
Giordano
Seabrook
Brodin
Ellis
Ekholm
Braun
Bouwmeester
Stralman
Tanev
Given the extraordinarily tight competition for playoff spots, also assume that no team from the East wants to aid Toronto in getting better.

Next criteria would be whether or not the team has the depth to move the player. Now the list gets even shorter.

Wasn't he on the block leading up to trade deadline this year? It was out there as a rumour
Nylander + Carrick for Faulk + Skinner
maybe add Kapanen from the Leafs
The Leafs should pass on Tanev and Vatenen both are 26/27 years old right now and both have contracts expiring prior to the young core hitting their prime years. By the time the young core hits prime years around 26 years old both of these players will be around 32/33 years old on more expensive contracts.
Matt Dumba is intriguing but doubt the Wild are trading him. The Maple Leafs should possibly look at Brett Pesce from the Hurricanes as he fits around the same age as the young core along with an extension that would be more suitable in the coming years.
What would the Hurricanes want for Pesce if they do decide to move him?
Whats better, the big 3 all near their prime making 800k each or the big 3 in their prime making over 25 million combined?
Thats what managers must consider.
Leafs have a great window for ONE more season before jvr bozak komarov ufas likely lost due to many rfas.
They shouldve given their team a better chance last season too for the same reason. The series was dead even. Dead dead even in every way, and they had an ECHL body in their top 6 through all those miles in all those overtimes.
A simple 2nd or 3rd for rental D and the series at a very minimum goes 7 games with a coin flip to move on.
This year is the same. Mature elc players means huge pay increase
Matthews + 2nd for parayko seems fair.
Holden is a bottom pair D...not needed.
Staal? Lol...ya right.
We can't afford what you want for McD.

We've got 3 big signings coming in 2-3 years...so cap dumps are a no go. And again, i won't even make an offer on McD.fine and thanks
just to be clear here; pt of taking Staal as cap dump etc is not to snooker, but give chance for trading partner to reduce price of McD, who you correctly noted will be a premium.
Offers for McD alone would be entertained, but then obviously, cost more if Staal not included
What would the Hurricanes want for Pesce if they do decide to move him?
The Canes have exactly 3 RHD that are NHL-ready and not crap...so the offer would have to be significant enough to justify creating a massive roster hole where Faulk is the only legit top-4 RHD in the entire Canes system today.
Beyond that, Pesce is 22, plays top-pair minutes on one of the best shutdown pairings in the NHL, is on his ELC and has substantial potential to improve further from the #2/3D he is today. After Aho and Slavin, he's probably the Canes least-available player. (Him or Staal, just because we can't replace either easily.)
A lot...more than you'd pay and more than I want to say because I don't want to have a 10 page argument with Leafs fans about how he's not worth what Francis would actually ask for.
Fair enough. Thought the Hurricanes had more depth on defence to replace Pesce for scoring help. Pesce should be kept by Carolina as he will only get better. Seems like there are not many options for the Leafs at this time.
Matthews + 2nd for parayko seems fair.
Crazy talk. Leafs at least throw in marner
