Chicago is going to make a lot of 2024 TDL deals. A lot of these vets aren't going there to die. They're going there to get traded to a contender in March.

Wait...i just realized this is a pick Chicago actually spent on an impending UFA. Now it makes even less sense to me.

If Perry joins a rebuild he should go back to the Ducks. No reason to sign with the hawks when he could sign with a contender or go home to Anaheim.

If the goal is to trade him they can't really overpay him, as his salary would impact his trade value. If the goal is to have him as a sort of mentor/protection for Bedard then they can pay him whatever for one year.

The Corey Perry factor means you likely play in the 2024 Stanley Cup finals.

The Taylor Hall factor means you likely draft 1st ov.

Do they cancel each other out and they miss the playoffs by a single point?

If you really are trying to chase a cup, it makes way more sense to play on an awful team and cut the season in half. You could sign with a "contender" who bottoms out and miss the playoffs entirely if you do it wrong.
Wouldn't he also then get traded at the deadline in that scenario?

Makes a lot of sense. Sign him, he is a leader in the room, then launch him for a 4th or 5th at the TDL. Great play if you have a spot for him.

Will probably overpay him on a 1 year deal and then trade him to a contender at the deadline for a pick, like they did with Foligno

In the meantime Bedard gets to learn from a former elite player and add some veteran leadership to the room.

Could be a smart use of Chicago's insane amount of cap space
Maybe Chicago can sign Joe Thornton and Zdeno Chara too.

If they wanted a veteran former elite player to learn from, then why tell Toews to buzz off?
