If the goal is to trade him they can't really overpay him, as his salary would impact his trade value. If the goal is to have him as a sort of mentor/protection for Bedard then they can pay him whatever for one year.

Less of a guarantee if the team is chasing a spot/ in the hunt. It’s a lot easier to trade a guy when you’re 30 points out, than when you’re 6.
