In Nelson's defense, he has had some glorious opportunities provided to him by JHS; if he can get fed consistently like that, he can be extraordinarily dangerous.

Doesn't really work in his favor as hes missed almost all of them

Brock Nelson is hurting us, not helping us. That's not to say he can't turn it around or start contributing more offensively but as it stands today, the Islanders are a better team when he's not on the ice.

I think if Nelson focused on - and we adjusted our expectations to - what he does best, he could/would be a valuable player. We thought he'd be our big, do everything down the middle, Center that we've been looking for. He's not that guy and doesn't play that game. He isn't Kopitar and never will be. Rather, he's a shoot first Winger that has a great release. That's valuable on this team as we have a number of playmaker types who are squarely "pass first" players. He still needs to get that engine going, work on his forecheck and intensity level but if we put him in a position to best succeed, I think we'll all be happier.

I hear what you're saying, but the kid has a lethal shot; sure, he's flubbed the past few but over the years he has shown an ability to put the puck in the net. Given more opportunity with a player like JHS, Nelson could act as a turret in the slot.

Exactly, I think he needs to find an open space on the ice and sit for JHS to put on right on his tape.

I didn't say he has been perfect but his play has certainly been better. I'm a little surprised everybody has just been realizing his laziness now though, he has played like this his entire career here.

You must be joking, right? Right? Jesus.

Funny enough, anyone see him in the last 7 minutes of the game tonight? Played hahd, dug his heels and won battles. If only he played that way all the time. What a piece of crap.

Two things, he seem to lack strengthen in 2 areas - knee and legs as I hardly ever see he criss cross hard skating forward. It is either poor technique or lack of knee strength.

he is also not very good at positioning his stick down on the ice and his body properly to shield the puck better. Either he is not gripping stick hard enough to retrieve the puck or he is using a stick not design for strong puck battle.

He also seem to lack peripheral vision as I see sometimes he miss players open on the other side of ice who he can easily pass the puck to. He is not a bad passer so it is either confidence or he has tunnel vision.

Think he has the tools but need to improve a few area to be fully effective and more productive.

As far as D goes, he seems to be a bit more engaged lately. Defense is mostly about moving your feet quickly in the D zone and willing to engage physically to ride a player out instead of just fishing for the puck. If you are not willing to sacrifice in the D zone, you can`t help the D pair to get the puck out.

That is why he makes is irate, it is like giving Pat Flatley the gift of offense, and yet they forgot to put Flatley heart's in there and grabbed Kvasha's heart

He didn't play great last night but no I am not joking. The guy is a third line player who scores about 20 goals a season. He is never going to be in the top 6 simply because he only has a wrist shot. Why are we acting like he is a top 6 player? Stop treating him as such.

Because the Isles treat him like a top 6 player...

give him it in vegas

I really don't get this.

I've change my tune god knows how many times on Nelson, but he's a proven 20 goal guy at 2.5M per. Just make him a third line winger until his contract runs out and then offload his ass if continues to be underwhelming and/or is looking for too much on his next deal, but for christ sakes there's not a lot of 20 goal guys (with the potential to pot 25) that cost essentially ~100-125K per goal.

Just get a legit 2C and slide him over to LW behind Lee and Ladd.

I'm confused. Nelson floats around the ice and is rarely engaged in the action - the exact opposite characteristics you want from a captain. Maybe it was a misquote and should be Anti-Captain. Check his jersey for a C-

The only captain Brock can portray is the Captain and Tenile .
After this honor Las Vegas has no choice but to take him.
Already heard the buzz on the strip is the Brock Nelson hockey slot machines will be in casinos by mid summer and that sheriff Woody hockey pin ball will be out by the draft.
So Bizzaro Superman out there today..

I will take the perspective and opinion of the folks managing Team USA. Obviously averaging 20 goals per year over his first 4 seasons does not mean much with a lot of folks. I am still waiting for a list of recent players that have accomplished it over their first 4 years in the league.

Sure he could do better and maybe he will as he is about to hit his prime years and at 6'3" maybe he is a late bloomer. Todd Bertuzzi was worse before he was traded.

Expecting a more complete and intense Brock Nelson is a fool's errand.
Anybody can change but for some it is less likely.
I have followed Nelson since his first two years at North Dakota. He has always played the same game, using his reach and decent skating, a very good wrist shot. But he was always weak on the puck, weak on his stick, lacked physical engagement.
Tes he can score 20 goals, even more if playing with the right line mates in a good season. But Nelson will always leave us wanting a more complete player for a 6'3" guy. He just is physically too weak and does not possess an ounce of grit or heart.

Enough already

Please trade Nelson before the season starts. I don't want to have to watch another 82 games of a guy giving 30% effort. I haven't seen a player that seemingly miserable to play hockey since Kvasha.

Even worse would be that he's due a new contract next summer. Let's get out before we get even deeper. Deal him to a team that hasn't scouted him yet.

A poster somewhere previous said that it almost looks like Nelson feels like he's entitled to be here, and therefore gives less than maximum effort. That's spot on.

Perhaps our current coach, who seems to value guys who can actually, you know, play hard, will have less patience than our old coach, who valued players who he claimed 'Played Hahd' and who had an inexplicable soft spot for underachieving veterans(See: Strait, Brian).
Maybe Weight gets in Snows ear and tells him the Nelson thing just ain't working. Not sure what we'd get for him. Probably not much. Part of a package, perhaps? He plays too soft to be a top 6'er and wayyyy too soft to be a bottom 6'er. His game just doesn't fit anywhere.
On top of which he's taking up a roster spot that could be better utilized.

Brock is #1 on the list of guys to turf, IMO. at 26, i don't expect him to change much. he is what he is.

the thing is, we can replace him with a guy like say, Bellows, but if Bellows isn't ready, it's a step back for the team. just replacing him does not guarantee that we get better. we have to replace him with someone better.

and if we sit his ass for uninspired play, his trade value diminishes.

i say, give him 3rd line minutes, and some PP time, in hopes of raising his value. maybe for the first 20 games? then trade him. seriously, i would rather have Quine play 3rd line LW/C.
