While stylistically they are both similar, JQ is much more of a playmaker while Rico is more of a shooter.

Also, who the hell is this Jacob MacDonald?? 11 points in 18 games as a defenseman.

He was one of the fill-in ECHL fall ups that Kowalski really seems to like. He had a sick coast to coast goal in one of the Albany OT winners earlier in the year.

He's been getting PP time and OT time. I wouldn't be surprised to see him ink an AHL deal for next season

He had impressive offensive #'s both in the ECHL, both this year and last, as well as way back in the USHL. Didn't do much while at Cornell, though those teams didn't seem to put much offensive up.

Not real tall at 6', but listed at over 200 lb's.

Very interesting offensive progression from MacDonald. He never put up more than 9 points in college. Guessing he was never on the PP unit at Cornell.

Has 11 points in his first 20 AHL games.

Quick question on AHL contracts - can an NHL team come through and sign MacDonald to an NHL contract at any point in the two-year term?

Yes; the Devils have the right to match.

I thought there is some confusing rule about that where if any NHL team signs him mid-season that he has to pass through waivers?

I could recall there was some weird reason we couldn't sign Lorito to an ELC until July 1st last summer. Then again, Devils signed Rooney to an ELC midway through his AHL-only deal this season and brought him up with no waivers.

Some MacDonald highlights:

Scored his first AHL goal shorthanded only 4 games into his tryout with the Devils (which shows how quickly he earned Kowalsky's trust, IMO). Goal is about 45 seconds into this video. Not going to embed all the videos just so the page doesn't get too clunky.

He had a sick rush in this game which is the first highlight and a gorgeous pass for the OT winner to Rooney. Also a nice play before that in OT. Will embed this one just because of how nice both highlights were:

Appleby was also incredible in that game and had an interesting interference save when the puck was behind him

Cornell also appears to have been a brutal offensive team. MacDonald's offensive #'s in the USHL were pretty good.

Oh dang, in MacDonald's senior season the leading scorer on the team had 10 goals. Only 2 guys had more then 5.

Only one guy in double digit goals (13) in his junior season as well.

Joakim Ryan is a d-man who graduated from Cornell the same year as MacDonald. Had good college #'s, 78 pts in 123 games. Had 28 pts in 66 games in the AHL last season, and has 33 pts in 48 games this season.

Fair to say the Cornell fwd's were lacking in offensive ability during their time there.

He's had a nice season and this may explain why they dealt away Gormley, to make room for him and give him more ice time.

It's nice to see one of the PTOs stand out and take a place. Gormley, a first round NHL pick, is heading south fast whilst MacDonald, a year younger and on no-one's draft radar, provides a better option. :handclap:

Do we have any plans for Viktor Loov? He does appear to have been allocated a squad number now but it's been three weeks since he arrived and Scarlett and Gormley have been shipped out.

Ken Appleby is listed on the Jersey roster on their official site. Probably just one of their random changes; unless anyone knows otherwise???

Players coming from Canada seem to take forever to go through the visa requirements.

Jannik Hansen was acquired on TDL and is playing his first game with the Sharks tn.

Eliteprospects.com says he was recalled. Do you guys think Appleby might have NHL potential, backup or other wise?

He came from out of nowhere last year as an ECHL callup, and played really well until the last couple months this season.

Is there potential? sure, goalies can come from out of nowhere, he did have a pretty long stretch of good play, he has good size, his junior #'s were good, his echl #'s were good.

Is he a safe bet? The more recent cold stretch have certainly lengthened those odds. But even there, Albany was going through some things like a team wide flu, and a bunch of callups to the big club gutting the squad. And he's 21.

He was just a hair behind Juuse Saros statswise over the first half of this season. He's cooled off since and is already signed for next season so, with Albany having had to sign a PTO replacement, unless Cory or KK are doubtful, the timing is a little odd.
