That's really sad, but on the bright side the guy had an opportunity to go out with his boots on with the way he played in that playoff run. Judging by some of the things he said about his time trying to retire after the injury, it seems like he might have had a hard time coming to terms with the situation.

Of course the guy probably wishes he could still be playing, but hopefully being able to be such a big part of that final run helps the guy find some peace and feel better about his retirement.

Things like this, and another situation or two that I don't really want to mention in fear of trivialising them make me feel bad about the Sens not winning it all last year. It would have been a story book ending.

If doctors do force Mac to retire, how do they justify clearing him to play for the playoffs last year? I don't remember him taking any notable hits in the playoffs that you could point to and say that hit aggravated the neck/head injury.

Its all very fishy.

Hats off to Clarke. Not sure if he's done but if he is, he was a great Senator.

He'll be missed. But on the bright side, our GM has shown he'll fill holes and so I expect some moves.

Well....what kind of doctors does this team have? How did Mac pass the tests in the spring? What would've happened if he had received a big hit in the playoffs with his neck already injured?

Anyone else worried that Bob McKenzie has a better handle on the Ottawa Senators than Pierre Dorion? Pierre said this is the first he has heard of this an hour ago. Which means one of two things, he has no idea whats going on with this team or he is bold faced lying to the media. He moved back to Rochester in the summer and put his house up two weeks ago. Its obvious someone knew, so at best id have to imagine that the sens are doing this for legal reasons.

Well crap.

Can we ever have a season that doesn't have some devastating news right at the start of it...

2012-13: Multiple significant injuries early on Karlsson, Spezza and Anderson
2013-14: Alfredsson abandons the team in the offseason
2014-15: Murray diagnosed with Cancer. Mark Reeds passes away from Cancer. Methot back injury keeps him out half the season.
2015-16: MacArthur gets concussed again 4 games into the season, misses the year.
2016-17: MacArhtur concussed in training camp. Anderson's wife diagnosed with Cancer
2017-18: MacArthur fails physical. Brassard, Karlsson both expected to miss the start of the year.

We couldn't buy a break even if Melnyk could afford it

Makes you wonder how he was cleared for playoff hockey five months ago but didn't pass a physical now. Sens need to get their **** together.

Injuries have killed any momentum we have ever tried to build with this team .We have only really seen our team completely healthy for brief periods .Hamburger run, and the start of last season playoff run .

Healthy we have a great team ,too bad we are never healthy:cry:

Marc Savard came back for a playoff run and then never played again. The health science on these injuries isn't perfect - maybe there is new testing protocals he couldn't pass.

Relax everyone - the Senators doctors know what they are doing, they are one of the more progressive teams on brain injuries.

He took a big hit in one of the series, ended up questionable for a game with a neck strain. Concussion symptoms don't always materialize immediately, so he could have been cleared going into the playoffs, and then the hit in in the playoffs caused more damage that eventually manifested into symptoms.

At this point, hard to imagine he ever suits up again.

Dude was a warrior, but sadly it's time to move on.

You can't take everything GMs say at face value. They throw up smoke screens all the time for various reasons. I understand wanting accountability for GMs roster moves and such, but you can't really get mad at them for being dishonest with you....throwing up smokescreens about things to fans/media/other GMs or spinning things is basically something every GM is expected to do for a variety of reasons.

There's absolutely no way Dorion didn't know this was a possibility.
