I was surprised to see Fabbri so soon in training camp, I think they rushed his recovery a bit, I don't remember the projections for his return but I thought it was around November. Sad to see him out for the season.

If we did sign Jagr, he's definitely not the same player he was but it would be like bringing in a player-coach almost for our young guys as I'm sure they can learn a lot from his experience, (Florida's young players did). Admittedly I'd approve of that move solely so I can buy a Blues Jagr jersey.
He wasn't rushed. He was cleared by an outside doctor to play July 31.

Since Richard Steadman retired a few years ago, you aren't going to find many knee surgeons better than Bernard Bach.
Well that's good to hear! Still, I can't help but be a little superstitious about the whole thing due to the super low chances/freak nature of the re-injury. But it's definitely comforting to know that Fabbri is in the best hands possible.

cool study. i'll drop the doom-and-gloom attitude regarding Fab's career...though it's still a great concern having missed so much time/development.

Yeah, I've been wondering how this affects future contract talks going forward. He's going to be almost 23 before he can start to prove himself. How does that affect ELC contracts converting to RFA contracts when most of the ELC is spent injured and out of the lineup? What kind of qualifying offer do you give a guy when you don't know what he's really capable of? How would an arbitrator decide an award decision?

I could see Army taking a shot at a lower cap hit long term and Fabbri not wanting to leave a long contract on the table given his horendeous luck.

Did this 'Bach' doctor guy give too early pass to Fabbri play? In my mind in this press Army sounds like there might have been miscalculated by Bach was it in reality too early to give him play 100%. Tho he is saying the other thing in press.

No, he didn't clear him too early. Fabbri had been skating since the start of the playoffs and would have had multiple scans on his knee before he was cleared for contact.

The issue here is much closer to home.

Doug Armstrong can say there isn't a villain here and paint Fabbri as one of the "unfortunate 3%", or whatever he said, but that simply doesn't match up with the timeline he gave out.

Why is it only 3% of these athletes that get a reoccurrence? They are getting the best doctors, treatment, rehab and advice. Which Fabbri doesn't appear to have got here. Fabbri had discomfort in the knee followed by swelling. He should have been sent for an MRI at that point. Frankly, there isn't any excuse that he wasn't. We'll never know the extent of the damage prior to the Washington game, but the team doctors allowed him to exacerbate the injury by not being cautious enough.

Obviously disappointing for Fabbri. Big fan of his, despite not being a Blues fan. I am confident he can return to being a solid player and contribute.

I tore my ACL revision at about the same time frame after surgery that Fabbri did, although playing soccer rather than hockey. Went through a similar process where it swelled up, and I didn't realize I tore until much later. I also proceeded to live and play beer league soccer without an ACL for 5 years which was entirely stupid, but not relevant. Looking back, I could have been rehabbed better. I was also cleared by my surgeon to start playing again, passing all his tests. At the time, it felt great but in retrospect I needed to get stronger, much stronger. I could speculate something similar where he felt ready, passed all tests, but you don't really know what ready is, until it is too late. I am currently going through the recovery (2 months out) on the second surgery now. All is going quite well, ahead of schedule actually, but I've learned a lot about what the meaning of knee stability/muscle requirements really are. Ultimately, persistent patience and a lot of hard work is critical. It's something that is rehabbed in PT and the gym for a long time, and you can start to feel back to normal even when you are not quite there. I didn't grasp that concept going through it the first time. Regardless, if Fabbri takes his time he'll get back to 100% or near 100%.

Also, side note the 3% sounds conservative. ACL grafts fail frequently although the numbers have dropped dramatically lately.

So is HF Boards trolling us after Fabbri’s injury. :sarcasm:

That ad is a result of your browsing history. Have you been researching knee injuries? My ads show data-centers and cyber-security, due to my job-related activities.

Though this reminds me of a thread in the asylum years ago where somebody criticized the Post Dispatch for running an adult-themed ad featuring some porn star. The poster was like "shame on you STL for running ads featuring Diamond Deepthroat (or whatever random pseudonym was used) and tainting my browsing experience"...before somebody explained how targeted ads worked. Lol.

I haven’t that’s the thing. I was just thinking it was picking up certain keywords in my posts and my Twitter feed discussing his injury.

Yeesh...just read JRs article.... not too optimistic

And that article is exactly why my initial response was, "name any guy, in any sport, who has had two ACL surgeries on the same knee and came back to be even 80% of the player he was pre-injury". This is a devastating injury for the Blues and Fabbri himself. Guys rarely come back from such things...and even if they do, it's impossible for them to be 100% unaffected. This is permanently damaging, no question.

My wife and I both swear that our phone are spying on us. I've had a random conversation and asked, " I wonder what the weather in Paris is right now", and when I opened my weather ap it was showing current conditions in Paris...and that's something had never been looked up or discussed. Similar things have happened multiple times. Knowing it's AI, I don't really care...I'd just assume receive a coupon for pizza when I'm talking about craving a pizza...but technology is getting creepy-stalkery these days.

Me personally...I just didnt want to believe it. He'll still be a NHL hockey player. He has the IQ, hands and shot to be an effective player....here's to hoping 10+mo of rehab hopefully makes a difference

That's your GPS communicating with google maps. You need to turn off google suggestions and tracking for it to no longer do that.

It certainly does seem like he came back pretty quick. If it's true he was cleared on July 31, that wasn't even 6 months after the injury. Seems a bit odd, but I'm no doctor so I'm not going to worry about that part.

Obviously this is hugely concerning moving forward. As big of a fan of Fabbri I am, his career right now isn't looking promising. Even along with these 2 ACL injuries, he injured his leg right after we drafted him too. His body has a lot of wear and tear on it for only 21 years old, and if he doesn't have the same speed or ability as before...I question whether he will ever become an impact player. I could see him becoming just a 3rd liner or something unfortunately. We knew beforehand that injuries were the only thing that would hold him back from becoming a really good player, and it looks like that may be the case.

Really sucks to have this happen, and I of course feel bad for him too. This is why we need to keep drafting strong. Because I have doubt that Fabbri can be considered a core player moving forward. I think Schenn replaces him in that role now. Petro, Parayko, Tarasenko, Schwartz, Schenn is the main core right now IMO.

So true. Recently I was getting ready to bake something and I wondered out loud "Can you put wax paper in the oven?". I pick up my phone and type into google "Can you" and it autofill-recommends "put wax paper in the oven" and I'm like there's no f***ing way that's the most commonly searched completion of "can you". They are definitely listening

Yup. Dont listen to the guy who has dedicated his life to the topic, listen to your gut. Captain Hindsight is always right, too bad he is never around when he is needed. This whole you can argue with doctors and scientist bullshit is frustrating. It inhibits any sort of meaningful conversation. Not necessarily here, but as a whole philosophy.

Finally got around to reading JR's article on Fabbri's injury. These lines hit me right in the feels:

Fabbri’s final words last week were, “there’s nothing I can do now except try and stay positive, be supportive for the guys this year and get ready for next season.” Shortly after saying that, he headed toward his car with a bundle of unused sticks in his right arm. Usually when sticks are leaving the rink, they're shattered and being thrown out.

But this time, it was Fabbri who was shattered.

Thornton is back from ACL and MCL surgery (April 24), and younger players typically recover faster. Re-injury in Fabbri's case is just an unfortunate incident.
