what about russia?I had made a comment a few months ago that this team appeared to be less and less European every year. I was wrong in thinking that was Shero's doing. He is now expanding the team's scouting presence in Europe and it's paying off already.
I'm not saying the team HAS to be more North American or European... but we should be open to drafting/selecting the best available player no matter where they are from.
what about russia?
I also realize how difficult it is to scout offensive talent in Sweden. It's such a tough league for kids to score goals in.
I think it was Shero in that interview I posted the other day who mentioned this very fact as to how he slipped.

Yea they deserve no credit they probably thought they were getting Brandon Baddock insteadI can't give Shero credit for Bratt. A 6th round pick panning out is just luck. If the Devils were so high on him, they wouldn't have passed on him 5 times.
Shero? Not really, but whoever scouted him in Sweden deserves all the credit.I can't give Shero credit for Bratt. A 6th round pick panning out is just luck. If the Devils were so high on him, they wouldn't have passed on him 5 times.
I agree, I am a Brattfan.bratt is my favorite player. I like him. he is very cool.
He was at least in their top 100-125 players (an interview with castron he said they rank around that many players) ranked and the thought process to take a guy like bratt instead of a rehill or baddock type is a good one. Obviously they got lucky too but taking guys like gignac, bratt etc. will probably give you a better chance to get luckyI can't give Shero credit for Bratt. A 6th round pick panning out is just luck. If the Devils were so high on him, they wouldn't have passed on him 5 times.

So we burn GMs for taking a kid who doesnt pan out in the first but we dont give them credit for drafting good players later in the draft? They are all 18 year old kids, no matter what anything can happen, 1st round to 7th.
Because not everyone drafted is on the devils board. They don’t need to rank more than that because they know they will still be able to go off their list in the 7th roundBratt in the 6th round was a low risk/high reward type of pick. Teams make those kind of picks in the late rounds all the time. Generally, they don't work out but it's a late round pick so who cares. In this case, the early results look like the Devils nailed it with Bratt, but it's hard to credit Shero or even Castron. If Castron had him at 100-125, why didn't the Devils go off the board and take him in the 3rd or 4th round?

Q: If you end up with a list of 100-125, that only covers the first three or four rounds. What do you do for the last three rounds?Seems risky if they were so high on him.

I would harvest a guess that NJ's 7'th round picks were on their top 125 players. Most team's lists work that way.Q: If you end up with a list of 100-125, that only covers the first three or four rounds. What do you do for the last three rounds?
A: Well what happens is there are so many guys that you don't like for one reason or another and don't feel confident or comfortable drafting them and they get drafted by other teams. For example last year, by the end of the draft we still had four names on our 100 list that hadn't been drafted. Just because a player isn't on our list doesn't mean he isn't on other lists. That's why when there's a player that you had at 20 who's still available at 36, you get a little excited about the possibility of taking a guy you had in the first round in the second, and maybe that's when you trade up a few spots to make sure you get him. Like last year, we took [Nathan] Bastian in the second round. He was No. 26 on our list and I think we got him at 41. So in our mind, we got a first-round player in the second round. We were excited about that.
Ten Questions with Devils Director of Amateur Scouting Paul Castron
Look Conte, you were great for a long time and maybe Lou directed you towards a certain style of player and you weren’t able to really strut your stuff but that is a different era. You and Lou never really understood the modern NHL and your drafts often reflected that. It’s time to let it go and move on. NJ fans will always appreciate your efforts and won’t forget you.
