Look Conte, you were great for a long time and maybe Lou directed you towards a certain style of player and you weren’t able to really strut your stuff but that is a different era. You and Lou never really understood the modern NHL and your drafts often reflected that. It’s time to let it go and move on. NJ fans will always appreciate your efforts and won’t forget you.

I'm super excited about Bratt, I just think hitting on a 6th round pick is more luck than anything. Not discrediting Castron or Shero. Obviously I'm thrilled with the results of the rebuild so far this season.

All I'm saying is that sometimes your better off being lucky than good.

Of course with a sixth round pick it’s more about being lucky. I’m just having some fun. I do agree with those who say the direction of the scouting can help make the luck a bit more likely. In the Lou era the lower round picks were dotted with plugs and thugs who had little skating and skill. Basically Lou wanted to take shots to look for the next Lucic sometimes. The current regime looks for skating and skill even with lower round picks which is probably a better hit rate than what had been done in the past. Now the current regime can probably be criticized for going forward heavy in the two drafts they’ve overseen but that’s mild criticism. A number of the lower picks seem promising and if two pan out the team should be happy.

It was definitely his worst game of the season so far, but as was said the whole team stunk.

He's 19, he's going to have bad games, still has been fantastic so far this year.

Let's try this again....with NO IRONY :

Bratt is good.

Why do I say this?

Because if Bratt wasn't good.

Then this thread wouldn't exist.

And if this thread didn't exist.

That would suck.

(oh and I just wanted to bump this thread up to remind everyone that Bratt has his own thread, too. Not just Nico. ;) )

It's going to be a long time before my awe at Bratt subsides. 19 years old, 3rd youngest player in the league, drafted last year in the 6th round...

Castron is a god

Devils picked 7 guys that year before taking Bratt. So they either had the best draft ever with Bratt and 7 guys that are even better than him, or there was some luck involved as well... No way they pass on him 7 times if they had known how good the kid would be so quickly.

Of course they didn't think he would jump to the NHL this quickly, but what you're saying isn't how it works either. You pick guys you like as low as you can get them.

Credit is due to the scouting staff for identifying his talent and hitting on him, in the same way people blame them when they draft someone who doesn't work out.

Oh well, you also have to make sure you get the guys you want. And sometimes you have to just pick somebody a little earlier than you'd probably like, because you want him badly.

In any event, compare the two recent drafts to, say, the 12 drafts before that and it is like night and day. The Devils had some really bad drafts with tons of Chathams, Thomsons and Rehills. It is totally right to go for skill and speed these days.

If you want to be a killjoy then the Patriots aren't really that smart cause they passed on Tom Brady five times before finally taking him in the 6th round. You can say the same of any late-round pick that pans out. It's still if nothing else a smarter use of a sixth round pick than just taking a grinder or AHL forward and also a plus in the development column that Bratt and so many other younger guys are playing well this year.
