Player's Tribune: Hoi Zame, New Jersey by Nico Hischier

I’ll tell you another story that people think is crazy. When I was 11 years old, my Swiss hockey team came over for the big pee-wee hockey tournament in Quebec City. It was my first time in North America, and I had never seen an NHL game before. So our whole team drove to Ottawa to watch the Senators play the Oilers. We were sitting up so high that we could barely see the puck. We were like two seats from the roof. So we just kept trying to look for number 4 on Edmonton.

We were all like, Wow, that guy is a big deal.

It was Taylor Hall. He had just been the No. 1 pick in the draft. From where we were sitting, he looked really small. He was basically just like a blue dot. But we all thought it was so cool. It was a big deal for us, because in Switzerland hockey is not the dominant sport, you know? The NHL is growing, but you can’t really watch games on TV. When we were kids, we would just watch highlights on YouTube on our phones. Then when the NHL came out with their their app, that was a big deal. Because then I could watch so many Pavel Datsyuk videos. Datsyuk was my favorite. I loved the way he played the game.

How awesome it must be for him to be on the same team as Hall now. I love everything about this kid, he makes me so happy. I feel like a proud big brother.

It is hilarious he had to wear the Devils jersey as a kid, and he randomly got to see Taylor Hall live.

New Jersey(No Fanz!)
NEWARK, N.J. -- Center Nico Hischier, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, is looking for nothing less than a victory when he makes his NHL debut for the New Jersey Devils against the Colorado Avalanche at Prudential Center on Saturday (2 p.m. ET; SN, MSG+, ALT, NHL.TV).

"I expect to win," he said after practice Friday. "I expect a good team effort to get those two points; that's all we want. I'm really looking forward to the win."

I love the interview with Nico and it was the only reason I jumped ship from Team Nolan to Team Nico before the draft. He is the Devils replacement gift, for Patty retiring. Lets Go Devils!!

The smile on his face during the opening ceremonies was amazing, his excitement for hockey reminds me of jagr's excitement for hockey

"I just saw Palms go down and thought it's kind of bad," Hischier said. "So I just stepped up for him. I thought that was the right choice, and just stepped up for my teammates, saying can't let this go through. He said thanks at the end, so I really think it was the right choice. It wasn't much. I didn't fight him, I just tried to make a sign or do something."
