This is what it's about for me. Shouldn't be about who won the 2014 draft, but which team is building the most competitive prospect pool, with the fewest weaknesses and ideally, the best and most complete talent.

our prospect pool doesnt seem nearly as good as it should simply because the head of the class galchenyuk is already playing in the NHL lol.. but good!

I'm so glad you are here SH, you add a much needed balance.

Thanks.

I really do like this draft from Timmins and Bergevin. They are steadily focusing on size and needs in the near future.

I get the Audette pick. It was a gift to an employee.

Audette was rated in the top 100 by many.

Like Gallagher and Hudon before him, he could be a steal in the 5th round.

I didn't like trading up to Lernout but at least he was a known quality with bottom pairing upside.

This pick is completely baffling. The data suggests nothing but a goon, I guess Timmins (or Churla) knows more than we do though.

A rookie AJHL dman gets 18 points in a league dominated by 20-year-olds and you can only discern that he's a goon given his high PIM's?

From his junior coach... http://www.barrheadleader.com/artic...-koberstein-sets-sights-on-alaska-for-2015-16

“With Nik’s skill set and work ethic I would not be surprised to see him playing at the professional level when his time with UAF is done,†he said.

A 17-year-old rookie in the AJHL, Nikolas has adjusted well, leading Grizzlys’ defensemen in scoring.

Most bizarre pick of them all. Even the 7th rounder makes more sense than this one. Can't wait to see what the kid is all about. Problem is that he's still going to play in that crappy league for another year before he goes to Alaska....

He can always go the WHL route. Habs will probably strongly suggest that he does.

I'd be really surprised if that happens. You do that for key players picked real soon who have a real chance at making it. If the player is intelligent, he'd stick to what's best for him school wise. That's the reason why in the end he decided to not go to the WHL.

I have never seen this player play, and indeed, never even seen an AJHL game in my life, so naturally, I've already formed a very strong opinion on his potential as a player. Bust.

There is no possible way that Montreal Canadiens scouts know more than the blogger I follow on Twitter.

Problem is that even if the guy is tremendous, which there's no indication then he is, what KEY here is development. And he's going to develop in the same league he just played in. And in Alaska-Fairbanks for the next at least 3 years if EVERYTHING goes well. So 4 years before seeing him in Hamilton. So it's a longshot put in the hands of development...just don't see how that route is a great development route.

I don't really see what's wrong with the development path. A few prospects take the exact same route: Jr. A or some other lower league for one year post draft before heading to the NCAA. Kevin Bieksa is one that comes to mind (he was drafted as a 20 year old, but still).

Bottom line is that I, and almost everyone else here have no clue about this prospect at all. Lets just wait.

From the quotes by Timmins, they see some upside to this guy. They want him another year AJHL then up to 4 years NCAA. They have up to 5 years to let him develop before offering him a contract.

Seems like they are projecting longer term prospects for the cupboard with their lower end picks this year.

I don't know his game, tbh, but from what I have read about him, he's a 5 year wait, and who knows what he'll be then.

I assume the big strapping RHD drafted as of late has to so with the Markov/ Beaulieau being in the 2/3 role in the upcoming years.

Also, for defence, you can never go wrong with toughness :yo:

I wonder what the story is that drew Timmins et al. to Olds of all places, and what specific attributes of his play piqued their interest.

I only checked out the first page of that file, but I recognized Dylan Olsen. I saw a couple of panthers games this season and he looked decent.

Edit: Whoa, Brent Sutter played in this league.

I guess Anze Kopitar should have never been drafted eh.....no alumni in Slovenia...so how could he ever pan out?

I'm not positive he's going to college. I asked Trevor where he thinks he'll play...he said "Alaska for now."

I thought it was interesting that he added "for now." Not sure it's etched in stone.
