People might be surprised to realize that this statement is also true in much of the USA.

Other than possible battery on the wife for holding her back, the act of grabbing the children and running is not illegal in some states unless there’s a court order specifically stating which of the parents has a right to custody at that moment.

This is actually an interesting thing to point out, now that you mention it. Let's just make up another scenario, let's say a dad and a mom are having a fight, so the dad takes the kids on a surprise vacation without the mom and doesn't tell her until they're already at the beach. Is that "kidnapping"? I wouldn't think it is, and if that's not kidnapping, I'm not sure that what Zaitsev did was "kidnapping".

Leafs dogged another bullet on a bad contract

Lol not really. Hes far better than Ceci, like miles better - and the leafs are absolutely terrible defensively, Ceci being among the worst. And if they really wanted out from the Zaitsev contract, this has got to be grounds for termination...

But yeah, Dubas is like Neo from the matrix with his bullet dodging skills on bad contacts..... LOL

Incredible how posters continually embarrass themselves in threads like these.

Like it's a physical need to be "in" all the speculation or you're missing out. 2019 version of high school gossip on steroids.

Come to think of it, is it normal to be divorced but the custody of the children to not be decided yet? This is just asking for "kindappings" like that to happen in cases of acrimonious divorce. Or maybe Zaitsev's marriage is still not fully dissolved and that's why the custody is undecided?

1 year of Ceci > 5 years of Zaitsev . Both are shit . I'd rather have the shit that i can get rid of faster . Not even a Leafs fan. Also grounds for termination needs well evidence of wrongdoings. We don't know enough to claim that about anybody in that story.

We just have the claims of both sides and i have no idea who might be lying and who doesn't . Maybe they both are or maybe both are telling the truth ? Custody battles are messy and usually filled with alot of anger on both sides.

No he's not lol

Zaitsev has been dreadful analytically this year for the Senators, while Ceci has just been mediocre bordering on poor.

I believe something like this happened recently in Ontario....child abduction was reported by the ex wife, an Amber Alert was issued;when the police found the dad and daughter it turned out he was taking her out for ice cream or something.

I mean in his defense he didn't leave his children, he took them with him and kept them away from his wife which is not public why he had to do it, but something could've been not right with the mother of his kids.

No way nothing would have been done yet by Canadian/international authorities or the NHL if this was a child abduction case. Has to be way more to this. Wouldn’t be surprised if Zaitsev is in the right here.

Until we know the circumstances under which the wife was able to take full custody of her children and go live in a different country than where the father is currently residing, it will be very difficult to make sense of whether Zaitsev "kidnapped" his own children.

Russia changed the law in 2017 ruling it's ok to beat women "where it does not cause "substantial bodily harm" (such as broken bones or a concussion)[26]

Russian laws deserve some interrogation, but this isn't correct. It's not "ok" to beat anyone in Russia.

The most recent decree lightened punishment for first offenses of domestic violence from automatic jail time to a fine.

This was justified by some highly elaborate logic involving stories about people being unjustly thrown in jail and an overburdened prison system. I don't agree with the supposed solution.

There is understandable frustration by many people, including activists in Russia. But it doesn't help when Western coverage of the issue makes no effort to explain the situation and the law.

It's no surprise then to see someone actually say that it's legal to beat women in Russia. That's not true, even though the law is bad. But bad laws on violence, including domestic and gender-based violence, are not a uniquely Russian phenomenon.

You are definitely not on the logical side of this.

When was he exonerated for his actions? Unless he was then your comment makes no sense.

As far as I know, Matthews was never exonerated? The charges were dropped after the two parties reached an out of court settlement.

Cha-ching.

NHL's Auston Matthews Settles Pants-Dropping Case, Apologizes Again

Exonerated or not, the Matthews incident has zero in common with what happened with Zaitsev and his wife (Ex?).

Or to put a nastier edge on it, let’s say instead of a surprise beach vacation, dad decides to pick them up from daycare early and permanently move with them to the other side of the continent. In much of the USA that’s completely within his rights as long as custody is undetermined.

Come to think of it, is it normal to be divorced but the custody of the children to not be decided yet? This is just asking for "kindappings" like that to happen in cases of acrimonious divorce. Or maybe Zaitsev's marriage is still not fully dissolved and that's why the custody is undecided?

I can’t speak to Russian law but in the USA the processes for divorce, child support, visitation, and custody are not linked together. Obviously it’s cleaner if you go through everything at the same time, but life gets in the way. If it’s an acrimonious situation, it will likely be much easier to file for divorce and child support than to strike a custody arrangement. Unless someone is just blatantly dangerous to society, like criminally dangerous, the custody/visitation process will require their consent to a negotiated deal.

If all accusations about his wife are true then it's Zaitsev's moral right to rescue the kids in any way he deems appropriate. All he should care about is them, not what some random people would say about him in US or Canada. At the end of the day, even if his NHL career is done after all he will easily get a fat contract in the KHL with one of the big clubs over there.

All jokes aside, this is the kind of thing that requires a lot more context for anybody to make a judgment call.

That’s like seeing a random crime committed against a person and saying « hopefully anyone thinking of going out in public is paying attention to what happens when you go out ».
I don't know, seems pretty smart in both cases. Be alert with who you're letting get close to yourself.

And if not ? Just assuming on side is right without knowing anything is more than dubious to me to say the slightest. You know as much as everybody else here and just go off claims off people you don't actually know. They could be well just be lying ? You don't know that.

This is Russia we're talking about here. "Law governed society" is a bit of a reach.

Also, who knows, maybe the courts did give him custody, and this was him rightfully taking his children.

We have so little information right now. Just a couple Russian tweets that got run through google translate.
