This is the only place where # of rookies on the team is more important than wins/losses when judging a GM.
Unless your name is Mo or Walman, you aren't going to cripple the team if you sit out a game or two or 10 for a rookie. It's a bit silly to focus on Holl locking down the press box when Maatta, Ghost, Petry, and admittedly to a lesser degree this season Chiarot are imminently replaceable. Holl is the low hanging fruit, but there are half a dozen guys on team that can be hot-swapped out without missing a beat.So you're telling me it's not time to panic.
And, no Ricky. It's not so we can "parade Holl out there 15 mins a night"
Holl hasn't played since January 31st, so if Albert Johansson were in Holl's spot on this team it would be bad for his development.

There was 0 reason to acquire both players and it's been evident since game 1.The Holl contract. Hated it then, hated it even more when we traded for Petry.
The disrespect to bench bucks... wow.I would bet a lot of fake internet dollars
Yzerman's stated goal is to build a long term sustainable cup contender. He has repeatedly stated that playoffs this season, while nice, is not the make it or break it standard for the year. There are players on this roster that aren't going to be part of a future contending Red Wings team. There are players in the A, that are playing very well, that might be. Rotate them in. Show them what meaningful NHL games are like. Maybe they thrive and are ready now. Maybe they realize how much they have to do and go back and work on it. But just standing pat as if our bottom 5 D and bottom 6 forwards are what we're going to ride or die with for the foreseeable future? That's silly. This is the only place where # of rookies on the team is more important than wins/losses when judging a GM.
There is literally nothing stopping Yzerman from tossing Husso on retro IR and calling up a kid. None. GMs find a way.
Now I see why you guys act the way you do. You think you can just "sit a couple guys and call up a guy from GR for a couple games or 10" - you can't manipulate an NHL roster like that for the f*** of it and NHL GMs don't just call up players on a whim while a team is gelling to "give a kid a look"
You should follow Buffalo if you just want to watch young players cycle through the system.
I think it’s very likely we have at least 2 rookies on the team next year and long term wise you are making a big stink about nothing.Yzerman's stated goal is to build a long term sustainable cup contender. Probably because that was something said this time last year.I think it’s very likely we have at least 2 rookies on the team next year and long term wise you are making a big stink about nothing.
Do I wish Edvinsson was on the team right now? Yes. Do I think this is hurting his development long term? Not really, no.
It’s interesting you are preaching long term while showing 0 patience for anything. Berggren and Edvinsson being on the team on opening night next year as opposed to now changes very little looking at things long term.
Yzerman would tell you what's stopping him is Albert Johansson is playing a big role in Grand Rapids and he likes how his game is progressing right now and the Wings have been playing really well since the new year. But obviously you wouldn't like that answer. There is literally nothing stopping Yzerman from tossing Husso on retro IR and calling up a kid. None. GMs find a way.
And what about our bottom pairing has given you any indication that they are "gelling"? A team overcoming massive deficiencies on the roster is one thing, but this isn't the '08 wagon trucking along.
Yeah let's wait until either of the kids hits a slump to call them up. That won't confuse them...Yzerman would tell you what's stopping him is Albert Johansson is playing a big role in Grand Rapids and he likes how his game is progressing right now and the Wings have been playing really well since the new year. (replace AlJo with Ed if you'd like)

Yea that plan is failing miserably.can't call up X they're doing well in the AHL
can't call up X they're struggling in the AHL
can't just go into the season with an unproven player slotted into the roster better sign a couple more free agents

We are going Vegas wayOttawa and Buffalo are prime examples bringing more rookies in. That had lead to huge success.
We are going Vegas way
what rookies?
Ottawa literally has 1 rookie that has more than 7 games played this year, Buffalo has 2
and all 3 are only playing like 14 minutes a night
It's almost as if there is a middle ground between no rookies and all rookies...It's not about this season and how many rookies they have now.
Those building mistakes were made seasons ago, bringing in kids too many, too young, at same time. They just learned mistakes from themselves (and did not learn at veteran ultimate pro environment), got paid on long contracts, and... those teams are currently going nowhere.
What about Vegas first couple of years?Vegas has 3 rookies with 17+ games played this year

From where I sit the kids in GR have to earn a roster spot in Detroit…You are right though - this team is comprised of ‘Misfit Toys’ aka players from rival teams that were deemed expendable and not many guys whom the Wings drafted. As of today, the Wings have the fewest games played by qualifying rookies in the league. Not finding a way to get kids up for a look here or there... that's not a good look for a rebuilding team.

Because "earn their job" means nothing more or less than hope for injuries on the NHL roster. Why do people here hate professional athletes having to earn their job so much? Very odd.
