Hockey Hell
From hockey: 10+ missing teeth, gashed left eye's lense, dislocated back, dislocated right shoulder

Non hockey: gashed forehead right between the eyes (scarred for life), fractured right knee, 2 concussions

Those are the noteworthy ones.. I'd say i'm pretty lucky to have never broken any bones yet..

Had a bunch of knee on knees in a single year and hurt me knee pretty bad. Didn't tear anything but the knee specialist said it's going to bother me for life at certain times and he's been right so far. 7 years and I still have days where it hurts. Had a couple concussions but not bad ones

Hockey: had a concussion once when I was first starting out. Avoided injuries otherwise, luckily. I feel safer playing goalie.

Non-hockey: fractured my ribs twice in the same season playing rugby.

Non-sport: broken elbow when I was a little kid.

Most Painful - Puck to the mouth, cracked a tooth in half
Most gory - Sliced my own knee open with my skate. Blood everywhere!!
Worst - Crosscheck from behind after scoring out of the penalty box on a breakaway, went face first into the boards, knocked me out and I don't remember anything from before or after.
Longest lasting effects - dislocated shoulder or boxers fracture multiple times. My hand is now made of glass.

The worst I've had was a concussion. How about you?

Since I played basketball most of my active life, and long before picking up hockey, these are all b-ball injuries (been lucky so far - no major hockey injuries): broke every finger on both hands at least once, some of them twice. Breaking your thumb is about the most painful thing I can think of happening to a human. Also broke my right ankle playing b-ball too.

As mentioned in the other thread, did tear an elbow ligament in hockey, but compared to b-ball, nothing broken/serious so far...

I guess after all those b-ball injuries, maybe hockey is a safer sport? :amazed:

Playing inline I moved from my left post to my right post with a T push. Unfortunately, the front wheel of my left skate caught in the netting. Tore my groin so bad it detached from the pubic bone.

I do NOT wish this on anyone. Worst pain ever.

Boxers fracture left hand going aggressive for the puck
I heard my bone snap
Most guys I heard get this fighting but for some strange reason I was just poke checking hard
Felt the force against my left hand
This when I was learning to play
my left hand grip in the palm and "stuck" there improperly

Damn, some brutal injuries here on this msg board :)

The worst part, is that so many injuries in hockey are PREVENTABLE with proper training,,, like shoulder seperations, groin/hip flexor injuries, ACL/MCL tears,,, a lot of man games lost to very preventable injuries...

Not much you can do about concussions except maybe a Brad Marchand low bridge :) I wonder if they "legalized" that move if that would slow guys down from skating 100mph into big hits (causes concussions sometimes... other times, it's just a "hit to the head" with not much speed needed).

How about a foot injury (tear to a muscle in my lower leg) from running outside on "uneven ground" - what a rookie mistake! :) It nagged me for almost 2 months.

Hockey injury? One time getting out of the equipment I was struggling with a knot in my skates laces when my hand slipped and smacked my shinpad and left my thumb sore for a week. That's about it really

As a goalie, my most serious is probably the torn ACL I got while I was playing junior - did the splits across the net at high speed and jammed my lead skate into someone's whose blade was dug in.

Then there's the broken fingers I got when I took a slapper on the very end of my glove hand, the broken nose I got from a fight that took 4 different packs and a cauterization to stop the bleeding over the course of a week (this one was probably the most painful - having a broken nose packed, let alone multiple times, is honestly indescribable), the horrendously pulled groin I continued to play with for several months because my team was in the playoffs, 4 broken teeth from a butt-end to the face, and a cracked sternum I actually got from playing football.

Last night I took a slapshot to the collarbone. Hit just right of the middle of my neck, right on the bone next to that soft spot on your neck. Broke the bone, but since it is a central break, a sling will do nothing. Causing blinding headaches and lots of pain.

On the plus side, it went in off me and was the GWG. :yo:

Wow, that's gotta suck. I broke my collarbone in a bike crash once, not fun. What side? Mine was the right side so it made a lot of things difficult to manage for a few days.

Did they give you the "bagless" backpack to help straighten it out? If so, use it diligently. My collarbone was broken in two places, into a Z formation but I wore that thing constantly and the docs were amazed that the bone ended up healing straight.

It broke almost near the center, just right of the middle.maybe 1/2-1" to the right. They gave me nothing since it is a central break.

Concussion was the toughest one for me. At least with knee injuries and previously broken hands/wrists I was able to do *something*. PCS had me sitting idly staring at a wall for about five months. It was not fun.

Mine is groin, just because it lingers and lingers. I've struggled with it for the past two years. It's annoying because it's hard to distinguish between regular muscle soreness and something that is more problematic. It makes me really gun shy about over-exerting myself.

I'm now a huge proponent of Underarmor Coreshorts. I wear them when I do any sport, sometimes even mowing the lawn.

If you find you have chronic groin problems, it might do you a lot of good to see a physiotherapist and have ultrasound treatments done on the area. They're used to break up inflexible scar tissues (the reason why I constantly pulled my groin) so that the muscle can heal new again. As long as you allow it to fully heal after the treatment, and then work your way back up to flexibility again afterwards (it's like starting over new), I found that it worked wonders for me.

I saw three physios for my groin. The ultrasound guy was useless, just waved the magic wand in a really unfocused way. The second guy was smart but didn't really help, seemed like he didn't believe me. The third focused on manual therapy (tricky in the groin area, especially with a cute physio) but it really helped. She was super smart and really helped teach me how to strengthen the groin and, more importantly, the surrounding areas.

Flexibility is important but keep in mind, stretching a groin injury is not recommended.

But your point about scar tissue is well taken. I'm planning to buy a roller to work on loosening up my groin to keep it healthy.

Ah, you knew about the ultrasound treatment then. That's too bad to hear it didn't work well for you. I don't honestly know much more about the treatment than what I said above (except that it did work for me), but it could be that the guy doing it wasn't doing it right. Who knows. My physiotherapist did use the ultrasound at first, but once that scar tissue was treated and re-healed we did move into manual therapy as with your 3rd therapist. I'm sure ultrasound alone wouldn't have been enough, of course; it's just one step in the process. Hope your groin is better, anyway :)

I think the thing is that all sports carry their dangers, and the more advanced the level you play the sport at, the more you expose yourself to those dangers. Heck, play badminton hard enough, and you could get hurt. (No offense to badminton players of course, haha.)

Hockey is just generally a high-speed, contact sport. But most recreational leagues are not all that dangerous.

On the ice - compound fracture above my right knee. Checked a guy into the boards and the dude fell back on my leg.

Off the ice - Fractured my orbital floor taking a line drive to the face. My inferior rectus muscle was entrapped and I had to have surgery on it. Dear God did that hurt like ****.

I dropped a 30 pound cooler full of beers we brought to the rink on my middle finger.

Felt pretty painful for a month.
