Im excited to see what a full training camp and fresh start in a new season will do for him.

I consider him a solid two way defenseman. I like the physical element that he brings, and he’s intelligent positionally. He’s more than capable offensively and he’ll probably contribute 35-40 points again.

Underrated jokester....

"Yes, the Toronto defence — forever the weak point of the Matthews-Marner era — is significantly better, deeper. More balanced, more dynamic.
Take it from veteran Jake Muzzin.
"I think so. Not taking anything away from Hainsey and Zaitsev and Ozhiganov — they’re all great players. But we needed a right-handed D, and we got two of them," says Muzzin, tipping his cap to Kyle Dubas’s acquisition of Barrie and Cody Ceci.
"That fills a hole we needed to be filled. There’s some areas we checked off. Now it’s on us to get to work and put wins together."

He didn't really know what he was saying there, flying through the scrum on the seat of his pants lmao.

A lot of chatter going around with people thinking Muzz is garbage already, that Gards is better than Barrie and our D is the worst it's ever been.. The season hasn't even started yet and I really don't know where these folks are pulling this sh*t from but I can take a guess.

You know when the hate and jealousy is flowing your way, you're killing it. Go Leafs Go.

Interesting enough, Muzzin essentially displaced Ozhiganov as a regular in the lineup last season. Aside from the bolded, the former RHD were second and third pairing, whereas the new additions will be first and second pairing.

Well technically he isn’t wrong. In playoffs we ran

Rielly Hainsey
Muzzin Zaitsev
Gardiner Dermott

So we had 2 d-men that shoot left playing on the right side;

Now we have ceci and Barrie who are regularly going to play

A middling D man who cost a top D man price. Wont ever and has never been anything more than that.

I think he’ll be more important for us than Barrie. If it came down to one (although it’ll probably be neither) he’d be my choice. Barrie is a great offensive D man but makes a lot of defensive mistakes. I also assume Muzzin would come in cheaper on the cap if we re signed him

I love Muzzin and love that he's always been kind of overlooked in his career. Only time he even seemed to get slightly noticed was when he was a #7 D-man for Canada at the Olympics. I hope that trend continues, will be huge to be able to resign him for 5mil or less

Muzzin has been a well-known commodity in LA for years, he’ll likely get closer to 8 mil than 5.

A guy who will be 31 when free agency hits who's needle is far more towards the stay-at-home D side than the point getting types that historically fetch money.. who's foot speed isn't his calling card....8 mil? Yikes. I'll gladly eat a crow sandwich if that day comes but for now I'm just going to come out and say it, you're wrong. He'll in all likelyhood land 5-6 range. We just saw Jake Gardiner get 4m and his skating is a non issue, he's a point getter, and he's 29.

Gardiner and Muzzin have almost the exact same career P/GP... Also Muzzin being a much better defenseman is more important in contract negotiations than skating speed.

So if they have almost the same ppg how does one double the others contract at 2 years older? We need defensive defenceman so he's a much better fit for us personally. But footspeed is a massive factor especially when mixed with age when teams sign guys. Guys don't get faster into their mid 30s. I take Muzzin over Gardiner based on our needs. We have Rielly, Barrie, Dermott, Sandin...we need a Muzzin. But Gardiner is 2 years younger and could skate circles around Muzzin and fetched 4. Kids are getting paid now and we just saw Provorov get 6.75, McAvoy get 4.9, Werenski get 5.....Muzzin doesnt get 8 in any world. And the more security and term that he wants (which is typical at the age of 31), the more hit you take on the cap. A 5x5 would be an extremely reasonable payday for him imo

Needing a player won’t make them cheaper. While there may not have been so much demand for a defensively challenged powerplay specialist in Gardiner, Muzzin is a proven two-way possession-driver with a great cup run under his belt. Every team in the league will send a better offer than 5x5.
