Team USA has their best group ever. I actually think they would have been better in 2018 though.
The long term story if USA wins silver will be "would they have won gold in 2018 with NHL participation?"

Lets try Team Finland again:

Laine - Barkov - Rantanen
Teräväinen - Aho - Kapanen
Granlund - Hintz - Puljujärvi
Kiviranta - Haula - Armia
Kotkaniemi, Tolvanen

Lindell - Heiskanen
Lehtonen - Jokiharju
Välimäki - Hakanpää
Määttä - Nutivaara

Saros - Lankinen - Korpisalo

Thats not going to be enough for a medal. And I still believe that we dont see Tuukka Rask and Rasmus Ristolainen.
Insane not to include Rask, especially as a third-string.
Lankinen? Come on.

You’re delusional.
Lafreniere on Canada C or Canada B being a favourite to win gold?
Canada B is still a Tier 1 team.
You look at a team like Finland or Russia and you look at their 4th line and there are names you think, "wow, that guy is not even a top player in the NHL"
You look at Canada B and there probably isn't a player who falls below second-line NHL minutes.

Team Russia which i wished to see would look like this:

1. Line: Yevgeni Dadonov - Yevgeni Malkin - Alexander Radulov
- i would like to see this line which would be very complete imo, there would be hockey IQ, strenght, skill, agressiveness and experience...despite these guys are aging now, Malkin type of player with a big frame, long reach and natural strenght does not lose much by aging, these types of players can play on high level pretty long...on the other hand Dadonov and Radulov are types who are willing to fight for the puck on boards and in front of the net, both are still pretty mobile and can be dangerous themselves...i believe this line could be hard to play against on both ends of the ice...

2. Line: Nikita Gusev or Alexander Ovechkin - Vladislav Namestnikov - Nikita Kucherov
- with the second line i would use the pattern from Lightings 2017, where Kucherov played together with Namestnikov and elevated his game to the point it was Vladdy´s best season so far. Despite Namestnikov is not any elite center by far, he has still pretty solid 2 way game and can be a useful addition to any line what he proved also in Rangers, Avalanche and Red Wings, he is a good skater, responsible and can fight for a team...the LW on this line i have 2 alternatives with Gusev or Ovi...i believe that Gusev is very skillful player with a great sense for combination, with Kuch he has also great chemistry and as such this might be a fine passing line...on the other hand, with Ovi, the line would gain more explosiveness, agressivity and would be more straightforward...for sure in this case it would be the one which would fit more for Kucherov whose impact would be substantial for this team...

3. Line: Artemi Panarin - Artyom Anisimov (maybe Pavel Datsyuk) - Kirill Kaprizov
- with this line i on the other hand use the patern of Blackhawks in season 16/17, where Panarin had his linemates in Patrick Kane and Artyom Anisimov, and i assume that Kaprizov could be a very similar replacement for Kane in this one going on as it might be expected that his next season would be even better than the last one...well, while Anisimov is still a big question whether he should be involved here, i cannot see anyone who could leave him out of this team...there is an option in Vadim Shipachyov but he is lacking intensity to play on this level imo and is not willing to play in front of the net and fight for the loose pucks as Anisimov, the other option could be ageless Pavel Datsyuk who would still have the skillset to offer to this line, since the duty of the center of this line would only be to secure backchecking and be a guard for these wings...

4. Line: Pavel Buchnevich - Ivan Barbashyov - Andrei Svechnikov
- the last line would be centered by Barbashyov who is now familiar with this job from his service for Blues with whose he also won the Stanley cup, there might also be a chemistry
from older days with Buchnevich who is slowly transforming in to a 2-way specialist...unfortunately, Svechnikov who most definitely must be on this roster is placed only in 4th line on RW...although, this cannot bother anyone since this would not be any kind of a checking line but could easily convert to a scoring line at some point...

Extra: Ilya Mikheyev, Denis Guryanov, Valeri Nichushkin, Mikhail Grigorenko, Grigori Denisenko, Vitali Kravtsov
- the extra forward i would like to see is Mikheyev who is player with great speed, hardwork and could be used for special roles, after last season i see him getting back on track next season...the other mentioned would depend on their current performances...

1. D: Ivan Provorov - Mikhail Sergachyov
- the first pairings is pretty solid and 2-way, both guys can move the puck, can shoot, can play physically, both are responsible and are active in possessing game

2. D: Dmitri Orlov - Nikita Zaitsev
- the second pairings is more mobile but lacks physicality on the other hand...anyway, these two are experienced and can are very offensive, especially Orlov has a great shot and offensive abilities...

3. D: Alexander Romanov - Artyom Zub
- the next season will show how quickly Romanov is developing, he has a potential to be a well-rounded d-man, Zub is on the other hand very responsible with a good decision-making and potentialy could create a space for Romanov...

Extra: Vladislav Gavrikov, Nikita Zadorov, Nikolai Knyzhov
- especially Zadorov and Gavrikov could upgrade physical play in to the defence of this team

1. G: Andrei Vasilevsky
2. G: Ilya Sorokin
3. G: Igor Shestyorkin

1998 on talent was best ever. Modano, Roenick,
Hull, Leclair, Tkachuk upfront. Leetch, Hatcher, Chelios
Suter on D. Richter, Barrasso in net.
You are missing Amonte, Schneider, Guerin, LeFontaine, Weight, Deadmarsh to name a few more. How this team didn’t win a medal is still baffling.

PS It was Hubert, Richter and Beezer in net. Barrasso was not on the team and was close to retirement by 1998.

2010 was definitely USA's best roster, without question.

Barrasso wasn't there in '98 but was there on the bench in '02. He was probably still the best American Goaltender in 1997-98, not sure if he was injured or just not chosen.

They won the World Cup in '96. The reason they got knocked out in '98 is pretty simple. Hasek. Not that baffling.

In fairness, that was (at the time) Jagr's best game for national team. Bit like Ovi in that he didn't really click on national team for awhile. In the documentary he said he was being double shifted and that was the first time he felt good. His come out of the corner and score a goal in the slot was a classic!

That was the elimination round, they walked out of their pool 1-2 which was a little bit of a shocker. Losing to Canada and Sweden. If they had won that game against Sweden they would have fared better against Finland, even though that was a stout and very good Finland team. They should have medaled at least, considering it was the mostly the same roster as WC 1996.

Obviously the center group of Malkin, Namestnikov, Anisimov, and Barbashev is the weak spot in the lineup. Namestnikov and Barbashev usually play depth winger roles in the NHL and Anisimov is not a regular anymore.

Any thought that perhaps Voronkov might be ready to supplant one of those guys?

Or perhaps it would be best to slide one or two of the wings to center, I'd expect either Radulov or Kaprizov would do well at center ice. Did Radulov play center at one point? That frees up wing spots for Gurianov and/or Nichushkin.

Panarin - Malkin - Kucherov
Ovechkin - Kaprizov - Svechnikov
Buchnevich - Radulov - Gurianov
Mikheyev - Voronkov - Nichushkin
Kravtsov

That looks more traditional to me, and much more potent. Obviously it won't work if they can't find any of the wingers capable of moving to center. One thing I would keep regardless is the Panarin-Malkin-Kucherov combination. You want a topline that can double-shift when you're down a goal, and that line should cause nightmares for opponents.

On defense, I'm going to be more assertive and say that I want to see a lot more minutes for Artem Zub and Vlad Gavrikov. All of Provorov, Sergachev, and Orlov have been iffy in the last year or so and Zub and Gavrikov are the best at actual defense.

Provorov - Zub
Orlov - Gavrikov
Sergachev - Zaitsev
Romanov

Perhaps with Zub's help, Provorov will look like an actual #1D.

Brent Johnson, Brian Boucher along with Barrasso were on the short list in 1998 but Barrasso was starting to slow down and coming off season injury in 1997 (I think). They probably should have gone Barrasso over Dunham though. 97-99 Barrasso was still the best US goalie like you said.

Team Canada found success by going against just getting the best players. They started to do things like take whole sections of teams like the Sharks and Hawks, to have that instant chemistry, and also to bring a guy like Kunitz, just because of his chemistry with Crosby.

I am an Oilers fan, and I think Hyman could be a great fit with McDavid, and if he is, they may take him as well as a Kunitz type addition. Also, adding Nurse makes sense for that reason, although at least with him he is a high end Dman so it's not a stretch like with Hyman.

I'm not sure what similar situations like that there would be for other teams. Mackinnon has Makar of course. Marchand and Bergeron obviously.

I can think of a lot of elite skilled players that would look great with McDavid.

Makar scores at a higher rate away from Mackinnon. In any case they are both locks. The Avalanche player who might go for chemistry reasons is Devon Toews, so he can partner with Makar.

A lot of times players that play on the same team don't have good chemistry.
