nothing of value out of this game. preseason dont mean anything.

oilers played solid overall against tough competition.

couple notes:

Foegele was one of the worst forwards killing plays turning over pucks.

I liked Samorukov most of all the defenders.

Benson lost his coverage badly on Weegar goal. Really ineffective this game... as most were.

I am sure the extra games help some of the young guys but woof. These last 2 games have been awful. 8 preseason game’s just too long.

I think the team is playing hard. Not giving up much which is good. I think Woodcroft and Manson have them playing with some structure. Hopefully the structure stays in place when the offensive players start to play,

But I just don’t think there’s enough skill in the line up in these last 2 games. I think it has set up the fringe players to fail a bit. But ultimately they probably just aren’t good enough anyway.

I thought Pickard and Skinner both looked good.

I don’t know how to evaluate the defense. Everyone looks fine but no real stand outs. I thought Kemp was about the best tonight. I think Murray will be on the roster on day 2 and Samo/Broberg and Nemo will be in Bakersfield.

Holloway showed some flashes but was his weakest game. McLeod didn’t show much but hes a beautiful skater. Janmark going through the motions but I see enough subtle plays that make me think hes a legit NHL player. Effort is always there with Ryan.

None of the Bakersfield veterans get much accomplished. They played fine but they just don’t show much especially offensively. I just don’t think Malone, McKegg, Benson, Esposito etc are NHL players.

Virtanen showed nothing.

I don’t think Foegele can play RW. He looked awkward all night.

Should see a better roster next game.

Benson looks ok vs scrubs but not vs real nhl players. Time to cut bait

Virtanen should be on next plane out

Demers did not catch lightning in a bottle, time to retire

5 games left, time to focus on getting ready for the season

You arent trying to win games. You don’t seem to understand what preseason is.
The best players play at like a quarter speed just to get some rust off and play less minutes.

Preseason is the time to put these guys in tougher situation (really if playing against NHL guys barely putting an effort in is a tough situation, you ain’t NHL ready) to see how they handle it.
You don’t get a fair representation of the player when you play them well above their expected level for three straight games without some level of adequate support. It’s like asking a freshman to write the MCAT without giving them a study guide. The results aren’t indicative of their actual talent.

Anyway agree to disagree :)

Again, if a top 6 nhl player barely putting in an effort is well above expected level then they aren’t ready to play in the NHL.

McLeod the best Oiler forward on the night. Confidence is coming however his decision making with the puck is still a work in progress. Guy is becoming a top PK option which is where I think his forte is.

Holloway hit the NHL regular season lineup wall tonight. Flamers bottled him up well and were physical with him. Part of the growth and part of the evaluation process for a wildly mismatched lineup. No shame in that. Benson slipped a bit against NHL speed notably the Weeger goal losing coverage. Virtanen with no physical game in which an overmatched team could have utilized any form of spark. Focusing on backtrack, short shifts but not showcasing any elements that made him a high pick. Still this is about the process to see if there's a viable bottom line, end of roster option. Right side is weak and more size still present opportunity area on the fringes of this roster.

Foegele. Again, another veteran player who could lead with a more assertive game but just kinda goes out there. Lot of non descrip forwards out there. Malone was maybe okay for his type of game. I like Janmark's size, decent skater and thought he was okay. Petrov drew one or two penalties which was good.

Niemelainen continues to lead young blue line options with a distinct physical game that's lacking with other bodies. Led in hits again. Only one real wobble when he pinched hard and got caught up ice giving up an odd man rush the other way. The chaos led indirectly to Stone's goal (which should have been stopped). Learning moment but a pre-season aggressive play to try to do something.

Kemp and Samaroukov were okay in much lesser minutes. Nice to see some big RD percolating in the system with Kesselring, Kemp and Wanner. Each slightly different - Kesselring with the skating and shot; Kemp kind of a safe, two way guy; and Wanner some promise of future physicality (after taking a junior's physical beating against a veteran Kraken team).

This game was not about scoreboard. It is an organization's decision makers able to view and assess lesser talent play up the food chain and to gage their individual and collective responses. What left me flat was a lack of physical engagement beyond a couple players, notably Niemalainen, maybe possibly Malone, maybe even Shore.

Pickard seems like a good signing as 1C

Solid depth for goaltending, when's the last time we had this? 2006?

I'm reading some good progression on the players, some maybe more advanced than projected.

They held their own but they lacked a bit of offensive finish.

Some may need more development time, but that's okay, everyone develops at a different pace.
Nothing wrong being late bloomers.

The line up was basically the bottom 6+Oiler rookies+Barrie+Demers. They look like they've been chasing all game stemming from losing 50/50 puck battles. A lot of puck watching and some were late at tracking their man.

Hopefully Woody and Manson look at tapes to identify and correct those issues. I'd sure like to see someone score at least a goal tonight but Woody's probably looking to form good habits and get them to play the right way. Just based on the roster none of these guys were going to generate a lot of offense cause they're primarily bottom 6 players.

The offense from the top 6 will be good enough to carry them through out the regular season so maybe he's looking further ahead and simulate a playoff experience where they need to be able to handle the opposition's top 6. They have to work on reducing the GA and I think he's preparing them to do that.

Calgary Flames -1.5 was the easiest money I'll make all season. My only regret is not betting more.
What is your objective to come on an Oiler fan site and state this? Besides the obvious (and so piss poor) troll job?

I assume you are donating your winnings to the SaddleDump Roof Rehabilitation Fund.

That poster is a board regular. No reason to think he’s a Flames fan at all. I think he’s just happy he won some money. I would be too after watching that dismal snore fest.

Meh I should have bet money. It was an AHL team against an NHL one. AKA easy money.

It’s silly to think the Oilers would win today.

Stats analysis in preseason with games being so uneven because of the vastly differing levels of competition is always going to be difficult to come up with much of any value... but after 3 games looking at the expected 5v5 GF% relative stats (probably one of the better stats to use in such a limited sample of games)...

Hot take there is that it's pretty much a random jumble as to which players have been the best/worst so far.

We know players that are NHL calibre like JP/Foegele/McLeod/Kulak shouldn't be near the bottom of the list... but such is the variance with such small samples and such uneven talent in both teammates and competition through the first 3 preseason games.

Dmen:

Peters
Kemp
Kesselring
Samorukov

Looks like they at least deserve some more looks in more preseason games to see if they indeed could push for a #7 spot on the roster but my guess is they are all very long shots at best.

Forwards:

Esposito
Petrov
Griffith
Bourgault
Philp
Hamblin
McKegg
Benson

That group are also likely all extreme longshots at nabbing a roster spot... but at least they look to be above average in relative terms so we can possibly see some sense there of players deserving of a few more looks in more preseason games to see if they can separate themselves out further from the pack.
