Not a chance. People love prospect porn on these boards and don't value development. Development is the most essential attribute to a contender. Patience and time, putting our young players in positions to succeed.

Rielly is also a really good person, that goes a long way. You want guys like him in your clubhouse.

You don't just throw it away because you heard a scout project one of the Finns as the next whomever.

Rielly ranks 41st in scoring for D and is challenged defensively. He is currently a second pairing defender and people would be hesitant to trade him for Mattews and only trade him for players like McDavid, Ovi and Crosby? Come on people, give your head a shake. If this guy was not drafted top 5 and didn't wear a blue jersey, I am sure everyone here would choose countless players before goldenboy.

I would do it so fast you wouldn't be able to blink.

Then i would peddal it to boston Arizona or Carolina for their 2 firsts plus. Or any team that wanted to give me a bounty of talent and picks. I am assuming the op meant we already picked first.

That pick is better for the rebuild than Morgan sorry. So why would Edmonton even want Rielly for the pick. They could do better with that pick than Rielly. Thread.

How about RNH and Nurse for Kadri and Rielly? I would pull the trigger on that trade.

Listen im not the biggest fan of Rielly but he is competent in the D-zone, he might make a bad play once in a while but the bad defence is overblown. He has done a good job against other teams top lines but the issue is that he has Hunwick holding him back. If they had like Hamhuis or Goligoski beside him those bad defencive plays wouldnt happen as much. And for the 41st in offence comment, the only good offensive threats we have right now are JVr and Kadri as well as maybe Leivo and Leipsic. It's hard for him to get points when the forwards on his team can't finish.

Wouldn't touch it with a 60 foot pole tbh. Rielly is much better than Nurse, they aren't even close IMO. Nuge while great doesn't offset the huge hit we take on defense.

Huge hit on D? Not sure about that. You would probably get an instant upgrade defensively, and if Nurse reaches his ceiling he will likely be an all round D like a Pronger/Suter. Whereas Rielly more likely becomes a Letang (personally feel best case scenario) if he reaches a ceiling. For me, I take the all round defenceman.
RNH would automatically slot into the #1C slot and his age would be a perfect fit with the young guns. Imagine a line with RNH and Marner/Nylander/Laine.
I think this would be a great trade for both sides. Obviously I am not as high on Rielly as most around here.

How do you figure?

By trading Reilly and drafting BPA in the top 3, we all of a sudden have 3 or 4 potential elite forwards, and zero top 3 defenders..that's awful for the rebuild. That legitimately gives us zero defensive hope for the future and drags the rebuild on. That's full Edmonton.
Not to mention that defenders take longer to develop
1. Reilly is still developing and not even close to his peak potential.
2. The defenders you draft eventually will need 3-5 years to develop into top pairing defenders. Once again dragging the rebuild out.
Bad idea.

Somewhere
Kinda hard to trade Morgan right now, as he's the only player with realistically any shot of being a #1 defensemen.

So are you saying this rebuild will see us contending in less than 3 to 5 years. Its taking five years if it goes good. Rielly will be looking for a long term deal by then.

Doesn't matter because its a fantasy whoever thinks that pick could be had for Rielly. Dream on if you like.

I'd trade Reilly for Matthews if we have the 4th pick and can take Chychrun.

If a 21 year old Reilly was in this draft he would go 2nd overall.

Cannot agree more with the importance of development. Since I would rather have someone who can contribute a long and successful career as a Leafs than someone who looked good as a rookie and goes down hill from there on.

Nurse is a 21 yrs old and only started to have NHL exp this yr. While Reilly is also 21 yrs old turning 22 and this is his third NHL season.
Both players belong to organisations that need defense help since they are drafted. It is pretty clear how far ahead and establish Reilly is at this point. Since Nurse only gets the call now. As for their peak potential, nobody knows that and it is pure projections. No point even bringing that up. All I know is Nurse is not untouchable in Edmonton while Morgan is to the Leafs.
As for RNH and Kadri. People have to realise that RNH always had Hall and Eberle to play with while Kadri have a rotating door of bottom 6.
I am by no mean Kadri's fan but to me he is still a better overall player than RNH.

Inappropriate to gauge a young defenseman on a bottom of the barrel team via points and defensive play. He might not be among the league's elite in the future, but he's shown enough to suggest he'd be a quality first pairing guy who can play all situations. His defensive shortcomings can easily be addressed by replacing Hunwick with a $5M+ defensive option via free agency, for instance. Also, Nurse hitting his ceiling as an all-round defenseman glosses over how his thinking the game is limited a bit.

But I think the notion of not moving him because he supposedly an immovable piece and part of the core limits the moves the team can make. The Leafs, for instance, can shore up their defense just this year by drafting Chychrun/Juolevi/Sergachov using their first and a package deal including Pitts' first and a player (or two). Would I do it? Probably not but it's a possibility.

mlse/rogers actually seems committed to this thing and willing to take some bad ratings for a few seasons. Its a good opportunity for the Leafs to flex their financial muscle and target a team desperate to get the fans excited

might not even need the pittsburgh pick to get it done, we have some win-now players on good contracts which is always a nice thing to tell a boss. I think Bozak and JVR might have surprisingly high trade value for a desperate gm.

Oh Gawd, I hope so. Remember how NYI couldn't suck because they didn't have their 1st so they steal Nick Leddy and give up some high picks for Boychuk and bam, instant playoffs. Look at all the good teams, you see their young D next to quality experienced guys, Klingberg with Oduya and Goligoski, (severely underated) Brian Campbell killing it next to Ekblad etc, etc and we continue to pair these guys with the Hunwicks and Paul Rangers of the world (nothing against them, they are what they are). Fla and NYI were the same defensive crapshow we are for the longest time and now they're near the top.
Reilly can skate and um... well... he doesn't have a booming shot or Kaberle passing ability and he's a real struggle defensively... we don't have a Hedman or an Ekblad or a Doughty, even if we have to throw up a high draft pick, whatever, we're going to be Edmonton East until we get all our young upcoming D some "quality" experienced dmen to play with and develop alongside.

Look at how long relativrly high 1st rounders like Hedman, OEL, Pietrangelo, McDonagh, etc took to develop into 40+ point all situation defencemen. Its like 4-6 years. Guys like Doughty and Ekblad are very much anomalies, Seth Jones was very very highly touted and didnt hit the ground running like those guys.

If we move Rielly, we're at best, ~4-6 years away from developing a #1 dman, maybe longer as we have to actually draft the player.

No way id take Laine over Rielly at this point. Thats how you become the Oilers.

This is the "shiny new" syndrome where in tanking for 1st overall is always better than the playoffs, and trading a previous year's top pick for a high draft pick this year is awesome, no matter how much it cripples your team. (See the one fan that trades the entire team for this years entire first round) Great we can ice a junior squad!

Heck lets trade Matthews (if we get him) for next years first overall!

Edit: Fortunately the consensus on here is the voice of reason.

Building around a #3 defenceman has never worked, either. So your argument is moot.

Why is he a #3 Defenseman?

Babcock said himself he sees Rielly as a #2 defenseman right now and he's trying to see if he can take the next step.

Or are you more qualified then Babcock?

http://public.tableau.com/shared/B898QD34M?:display_count=yes

Strong growth except for shot suppression which I'm not surprised about, he's now getting top pairing shut down minutes versus the minutes he got last season.

I love how you can stomp someone in an argument on here and people leave with their tail between their legs.

Your chart shows Rielly is not top 6 worthy in both shot and goal suppression and getting worse. Sure you can blame Hunwick and argue tougher assignments, but let's not pretend you "stomped someone."
Rielly is currently a second pairing level defencemen that is challenged defensively and is putting up mediocre point totals for someone that was supposed to be elite offensively.
