Way too many stupid 3 point games. The shootout is dumb. It’s not hockey at all. It’s practice. Nothing odd or weird about ties. NFL has them. Soccer has them.
Shootouts are more hockey than 3v3 is. I'm pretty sure penalty shots are more common than 3v3 in actual play.

Ties are much more better.

Imagine the winning team giving up a goal when the other team pulls the goalie. Imagine how pissed they’re gonna be for nit winning the game. Now imagine the losing team tying it.

Now get rid of the 3x3 overtime and shootout and let both teams fans rip each other until the next game.

Any time a player slows down to a crawl to a put on a stick handling exhibition in front of a goalie with no back-check, no pressure, no speed or momentum… Sorry. That’s practice. That isn’t hockey. Shootouts are as stupid as 3 vs 3. A tie is better than another 3 point game.

Make regulation wins worth 3 points and I’d entertain the nonsense of 3 vs 3 as hockey. Or the shootout as hockey. Because at least then a practice drill win is worth less than actually winning by being better at real hockey. Not better at practice drills.

Coaches have killed 3on3, extending it won't make it any better and just increase the chance for injuries.

Use a 3-point system, but go directly to the shootout, no 3on3 nonsense, just get the outcome over with.

i.e.

3 points regulation win.
2 points shootout win
1 point shootout loss

Ties never bothered me. There’s nothing wrong with meeting one’s equal on any given night and acknowledging that you fought to a standstill. It’s certainly better than the fantasy pretend of more teams being “.500” and the make believe longer playoff hunt. But I understand why it doesn’t fit the narrative of winner/loser, triumph, and the rest of sports hyperbole.

So with that in mind, I wouldn’t mind seeing ties brought back with a twist. Make them worth zero points for either team, only ever giving points for a win. Did a team win the game if they tied? No, so treat it the same as a loss. No points.

You’d see teams trying real hard again if they’re faced with walking out of the arena with nothing.

I conclude this post by acknowledging that a move like that is also me playing fantasy make believe.

With how expensive games are to attend nowadays…ties can f*** off.

The game is watered down and soft enough as is. If I’m expected to pay a small fortune for tickets, shitty arena food, parking etc. to watch today’s on-ice “product”, then someone better go home a winner when all is said and done.

If not in regulation than make it 10 minutes of 4 on 4 OT followed by a shootout

Keep shootouts but implement the 3 point system pretty much every other pro league in the world uses to incentivize winning in a non-gimmicky way.

It amazes me how many people have nostalgia for ties.

Would you be cool with a tie in the playoffs at the end of two 20-minute overtimes? No? That's weird, it's a valid result.

Not sure why continuous OT a playoff staple, but apparently verboten during the regular season. Makes zero sense.

MLB? "Game will go as long as it has to."

NBA? "Game will go as long as it has to."

NHL? "K so we're gonna give you five minutes and then it's straight to penalty shots. Wrap it up."

The easy and definitive answer is....

It's not the shootout itself that is the problem. It's the = number of points as a regulation win. Easy fix, change the point system and everyone is happy.

Notice how you omitted the NFL, the closest sport to hockey in physical demand? They have hard limits on regular season OT.

They shouldn't either.

Playing just once a week on top of that, I see nothing wrong with continuous OT for the NFL. You'd think the broadcasters would be pushing for it, even.

No ties, just extend 3 on 3 and have the refs use the same standard in OT as regulation.

I don’t hate ties and I get why the league wanted to eliminate them. I do hate the loser point though. All games should have the same value in the standings. A game getting to OT shouldn’t make that game now worth 50% more than a game that ends in regulation. Go to a 3-2-1-0 point system if you want to keep the shootout.
