I did a brief search and couldn't find any existing threads for this topic, so I thought this might be an interesting discussion to start.

Hat tricks are not an everyday occurrence and usually scored by mid-to-highly skilled players. Who is, in your opinion, the worst NHL player ever to score a hat trick?

Jim McKenzie is probably one of the most obscure ones. He had long career and mostly known for fighting, in his best season had five goals.

Eric Boulton had a hat trick this year.

    Mick Vukota.

17 goals in 546 career games, career high of 4 goals in a season. Had a hat-trick in 1990.

Eric Boulton is right up there, but his goal-scoring record is actually a bit better than Vukota's.

All 3 of Alexei Yegorov's career NHL goals came in one game in 1996 - probably had the worst career of any player to score a hat trick.

    ________

Worst player to ever score 4 goals in a game is probably Jaroslav Svejkovsky.

Brunnström is definitly one of them if you exclude enforcers. Career AHL player who got lucky.

Georges Laraque scored a hat trick against LA several years ago while playing with the Oil.

I'd say Brunnstrom. Eric Boulton is at least a serviceable 4th liner.

I nominate Jeff Toms, courtesy of good ol' Byron Dafoe. Evidence here.

I was gonna say Kevyn Adams, but god, it's not even close. Many worse players have done it.

A few seasons back, didn't Adams at one point have 6 goals and both were from hat tricks?

Great idea for a thread. I'm stunned to learn of hat tricks by Vukota and McKenzie!

I am not sure about "worst" but Tony Horacek scored one.

Finally, a mention of Deron Quint.

Ian Laperriere once had a hat trick as well.

Andy Delmore did so in the playoffs.

How can be mentioned a player with 1000+ NHL games in any thread starting with worst?

I was thinking the same thing... when looking at the chart above, I'm willing to bet (without seeing them) that Tony Horacek and Marshall Johnston were "worse" players than Vukota.

When Martin Lapointe was a Bruin he got a hatty against Martin Brodeur. I don't know who was more surprised, Lapointe or Brodeur

Nick Lidström obviously. Took him the longest to get there.

All of these players have more hat trick than Shane Doan and Pavel Datsyuk (in the regular season).

And Sheldon Souray once scored a hat trick vs Nashville as a member of the Habs.

  22. Eric Boulton has to be up there.

Yeah, that was the year Adam Oates should have taken half his salary.

But no one has mentioned Matthew Barnaby yet? Maybe not the worst ever but he did it in the playoffs against Montreal. Still can't stand the guy to this day. As a former player or as an analyst. I mean does he have to be on EVERY episode of Off the Record making googly eyes with his man crush Michael Lansberg? He still has that arrogant smirk to this day.

I remember that Rupp hat trick, and breaking several things in my house over it.

No doubt, but Simon deserves credit, too. He is not the only enforcer to play with a good playmaker, but he is the only one to turn it into a semi-elite season.
